I think we went through this last year, when the finals winners got trophies and a couple hundred bucks in GW credit. The problem then wasn't just the drop off from semis, but the fact that the first few years of Hard boys had massive Forgeworld prize support. So, instead of winning thousands of dollars in resin, they won a trophy and $300. It was a bit jarring.

With multiple locations allowing more people to attend, I think most people go for the challenge. I think most people knew this year that the "piles of loot" is, if not a lie, a shameless exaggeration.

I'm fine with them handing out trophies instead of cash or other prizes. But that gun looks like crap.

That was (for 'AB) and is (for Vegas) his strategy. Everyone plays SW/BA/IG since they are 'competitive'. That means they aren't prepared for Daemons. If they do prepare too much for Daemons, they can't handle SW/BA/IG so never get to face him anyways.

It's a pretty good idea. Skill has always been more important than list.

Read what you just wrote. It completely counteracts the "skill has always been more important than list" statement.

I think the gun looks pretty sweet, actually.

I, for one, would be happy to win a tourney with little or no prize support. What's more, I would be aggravated if the prize support was junk from Forgeworld. The concept of "just winning a trophy" is just fine with me, but I would think that Games Workshop could come up with a decent trophy. It might just be the picture (no offense to the original poster, I understand that sometimes the picture just doen't capture the reality...all too well...) but that trophy is pretty unimpressive. I actually stopped to go back and make sure the OP was in fact talking about the finals at THE 'Ard Boyz tourney. I was sure that THIS couldn't have been the main prize.

I understand the concept of being "just in it to win it," but I want everyone to KNOW I won it. I think any first place trophy (for any kind of competition for which a trophy is given out) should be impressive enough that people who don't compete in that field should be impressed.

I love the fact that they have made the tournament more for those who just want to play the game for the sake of playing the game. The guy can go get himself a nice wall plaque made that says he is the champ and have it so that the Shoota rests on the plaque. That would be sweet.

My only question base on the photos is that his Daemon army did not look as if it was fully painted. If this is the case, I thought you had to field an army with at least three colors on it?

I think 'Ard Boys tournaments make allowances for unpainted models. But, I could be out of line...

Umm.... 'Ard Boyz has no painting requirements. Your models just have to be assembled.

How so?

My statement was saying that Daemons is probably a somewhat weaker list that is made stronger by the field at the tournament. My second statement was that he was able to pull it off because he was skillful.

Not clear enough?

You stated that "A list prepared for Daemons can't be prepared for the "competitive" lists."

So, your point of:
pretre wrote:Skill has always been more important than list.
is completely nullified simply by dint of the fact that he brought a list for an army that noone prepared for.

Well, I was quoting his statements on his strategy and then posting my own thought, but I get what you're getting at because I wasn't clear the way I did it.. If you want to scratch my original post, you can replace it with:

He brought an unconventional list/army from a 'weak' codex to put his opponents on the wrong foot and was successful because he is skillful.

The rarefied atmosphere

They had some fantastic prizes (last year I think), a combi plasma gun and thunder hammer. They were really cool.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

That shoota is sick.

I'd take that over some minis that any fool with enough money could walk in off the street and buy. A unique, handmade piece of art is so much better.

Wait, so in the Semis, he gets a Crap-Ton (if you'll excuse the phrase) of Blood Angels Miniatures, more than he'll ever need to Field, and in the Finals, he gets a Cardboard Ork Shoota? Man, that's sad. He probably thought it was a Joke, and then, 'Wham, that's your lot. Bye bye, now. Come back next year, there's an Inflatable Thunder Hammer up for grabs!'
