So Episode No. 3 was pretty good too. This mini series has been a pleasant surprise to be honest. BBC normally produce such low brow tripe and whilst this is not probably not all that clever, it does at least provide us with clues as it goes along so the solution doesn't appear to have been plucked out of thin air (I'm looking at you Dr Who). Holmes was very well playd by Benedict Cumberbatch (what a name!?) and it was amusing throughout.
I guess I can't say too much about last night's episode without massive spoilers (and I can't be bothered to do one of those spoiler boxes), but if you've seen the first two, you can probably guess who puts in an appearance. Here we have a massive disappointment as the actor concerned thinks doing a funny voice is sufficient to play evil with a few screws loose.
That said if they don't focus too heavily on his character in the future, I'll happily watch the next few.

I think you have hit the nail on the nead there Flashman.
I thought that this was an improvement on Ep. 2 and was enjoyable throughout, right up to what you said about "guess who".
The actor [and indeed the director] needs a spank in the chops for that two minutes of rubbish at the end but hopefully he will be someone pretending to be Sherlock's nemesis and we will get a proper "headline" actor for series two. The mother-in-law [who seems to know about these things?] told me that the new series wasn't going to be made until next year, so that is a little disappointing!
Nonetheless thouroughly enjoyable, well done Auntie Beeb.

WooHoo!!
The producer Sue Vertue has confirmed that there will be more episodes
BBC NEWS wrote: The BBC's modern update of Sherlock Holmes will return following the end of its initial three-episode run, its producers have confirmed.
"There will be more," producer Sue Vertue told the BBC's Breakfast programme. "We're having a meeting to talk about how many and when."
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson, Sherlock has been a ratings hit for BBC One.
More than seven million people tuned in to see Sunday's dramatic cliffhanger.
Based on stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the 90-minute specials were written by Mark Gatiss, Stephen Thompson and Steven Moffat.
Moffat - lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who - said there would "definitely" be more instalments in the future.
"Steven and Mark are very busy - Steven is obviously doing Doctor Who as well - so it's just when we're going to do them," said Vertue.
Moffat, her husband, also confirmed that any future instalments would remain 90 minutes long.

I did enjoy Ep03, but must say that the producers/writers/directors are a bunch of bastards for leaving it on that cliffhanger without knowing WHEN there will be another episode!

If I hadn't noticed this thread I would have been waiting for it in front of my tv on sunday night.
Three episodes? And yeh, the cliffhanger? It's as if they thought they had little chance of getting a second series so they put that in to push the point home.
They should stop faffing around with feature length episodes and put on a decent run of hour long stuff. As good as it was I could find stuff to cut out of those three or at least find bits where they were giving background which could have waited till another episode.

Yeah I agree it's an odd format for a series, but I expect they didn't know how well it would be accepted/liked.
Hopefully they do like 6x1 hour series next time.

Thought I would dig this thread up again.
I saw a few Spring/Summer season previews on the Beeb over the last few weeks and in amoungst it all a certain Benedict Cumberbatch appeared a few times indicating that the new series of of Sherlock is well advanced and hopefully with us soon.
Time to look out for some rumours on the web me thinks.

BBC - A war hero, invalided home from Afghanistan, meets a strange but charismatic genius who is looking for a flatmate...
Finally, the story of how mattyrm and Albatross first meet is coming to the small screen! I hear a film is in the works.
it is London, 2010, and Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes are meeting for the first time.
Oh.

So episode 1 of the second series just finish and I am pleased to say that it maintains its standards set so high previously.
Sadly Moriaty stays played by the same smuck but everyone else was pretty damn good.
Typically convoluted plot but that's part of the fun.

I'm looking forward to watching ep4 tomorrow.

Well I think I can see why all the recent Dr Who episodes have been turkeys. Clearly all of Steven Moffat's writing prowess has been plied into this.
Another excellent Sherlock episode, but has the waste of a good Doctor been worth it?

I enjoyed it, chuckling throughout. As before, it's not as clever as it thinks it is, but Benedict Cumberbatch is just superb in the main role.
I find it odd that TV and film productions of Sherlock Holmes get obsessed with very minor characters from the books. Similar to Moriarty, Irene Adler only apeared once (in the short story A Scandal in Bohemia), but today's writers are keen to beef up her role, because she is one of the few villains to beat Holmes (although he does foil her scheme in the original story, she evades capture and leaves a politely mocking note).
I did like it that she was referred to as The Woman last night's episode. Again this is a reference to the original story, where Watson notes that following the events of A Scandal in Bohemia, Holmes forever referred to her as The Woman.
Another cute reference was the title of one of Watson's blog entries, The Speckled Blonde, which was a riff on the The Speckled Band.

Thoroughly enjoyed last nights episode, I even ( more or less) worked out the bit with the guy and the backfiring car.
Casting was spot on -- the guy who plays Moriaty I think is superb and he gets better with every appearence.
.. I'm guessing then that Sherlock doesn't know how to set his phone to silent then ?

The latest Sherlock Holmes reprint of "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (with Cumberbatch and Freeman on the covers) has the misprint "The Speckled Hen" at the top of each page of that chapter.

I thought it was complete and utter clap-trap and sums up everything that is wrong with modern culture. It was symptomatic of a low risk culture that peddles out remakes, reduxes, sequels and prequels.
Every year we see the same old remakes of Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and Doctor Who Xmas special.
Why is British TV so guff? Where are the risk takers?

Fairly enjoyable though i am starting to tire with some aspects of the show. It was also noticably less witty than the first couple of episodes, there were no really great one liners.
I really enjoyed Moriarty in the the last episode of series one. The performance was pretty good and the actor well chosen. He indulges his intelligence like a spoilt child.
I was pretty disapointed they didnt go for what i thought though. Would have totally suited the show.

Another rip-snorting episode I thought. An interesting spin on the Hound of the Baskervilles.
I hit the plot mostly there but am happy to admit i called it wrong on the villain of the piece.
Brilliant way to include the lights on the moor IMHO.
Looking forward to the next and final episode of this series, not so much the inevitable long wait for another series. This is why i am happy to pay the licence fee.

I actually thought that Watson was in it allot more this week, although allot of it was tutting and trying to remind Sherlock of his manners.
I thought that he was going to be allot more central what with the theme of the episode but that led up a, all be it funny, dead endd (lights on the moor and then talking to the threapist).
But lets face it he's not there to upstage Sherlock, he's just the foil after all.
