Mewiththeface wrote:Here is the problem; The red will end up being red/pink. Normally, red should be highlighted with yellow and it will stay red but if you highlight red with white, it will become pink. Now, metal; Metal is highlighted with white with darker tones very close to the highlights. So, when you make a metal red, it will be a very strong pink sheen which will be even more noticeable with a darker red right next to it. If you don't mind this, you don't have a problem. TL;DR metal red will generally look pink.
Hmm, you've got a good point there... Thanks. Maybe I'll try out NMM, see how that fares.. Agh, still can't decide..

I personally dont see the metalic shine in that picture. It just looks like a dark red over a black base coat that is blended (or perhaps some carefull ink tints) up to a brighter red.
It almost looks like the red was started using Scab Red, then highlighted up to blood red. No yellows or anything else used.
The Feet have a clear view of what was done. No metalics, just some very carefull blending.

That's because it has been painted using NMM, not metallic paints so it will have a painted shine not an actual one.

A guy i know got a really sweet looking effect by using mithril silver and then washing it with an insane number of incredibly thinned red ink (i know GW don't do the inks any more, but it shouldn't be that hard to get a hold of inks from a FLGS).
Baal red thinned might work, but it has a pinkish tinge to it, maybe try using very VERY thinned paint of your chosen colour.

Get some Vallejo metallic medium. Just add it to your paint and instant metallic!
Ink washing over a regular metallic base also works. Just be patient- it will take a couple of run throughs.

I was going to paint crimson fists recently and while googling images came across a blog on painting metallic blue crimson fists! sorry I can't link it but if you search you should find it. they used mithril silver and washed with blue ink until they got the desired shade, i'm sure you can do the same with red, maybe not GW red but you could always try another brand that's maybe more 'inky' than 'washy' if that makes sense? the effect looked awesome if I find a pic i'll try and get it to you. Automatically Appended Next Post: Dude found the site, go to google and search 'viva metallica' i think the home page is about three down, this should whet your creative appetite i'm sure! :-)

Alright, so that picture IS NMM... What about this, then? http://coolminiornot.com/225652 The description says no NMM was used at all! How can that be? I've tried washing gold with baal red a bajillion times. Looks pretty good so far. I'm just not sure if it'll be alright on an entire model.. Gonna try the NMM next. Hopefully I don't mess up too hard. Edit: Yowza! Checked out that site, Nerdfest, he has some red guys, and they look great! Red's a little pink, but that should be fixable with some washes. Hmmm..

Bohun's Khorne Lord in your link shows how nice true metals look when you use glazes to tone 'em down...
it's being called demi-metallics, where you use non-metal colors to shade, and glazes to tone down the highlights...
maybe i'm dense, but how has painting a nice, high-contrast, red got anything to do with NMM...
you are creating a red armour, and not a NMM gold, bronze, or steel...
i'm confused as to how the armour on Celestine in the first link has anything to do with NMM...
it looks like well painted red, that's all...
as for inks, i use the P3 line from Privateer Press...
the Red Ink, with some mixing meduim and a lot of water, makes a very nice glaze to tone down the orange and salmon tones that you use to highlight red...
once you've achieved the contrast between shadows and highlights that you want, about 15 glazes of very thin ink brings it all together to create a nice red...
don't be afraid to experiment with a centerpiece mini...
it can always take a bath in the Simple Green if you don't like the things you try out for the first time...
cheers

Woah, so Demi-Metallics. Good to know the name of that.
Anyways, thanks. That was a pretty informative post. I should work on highlighting better, then, and go the 'medium route'. High contrast red with glazes. Sounds good. Pictures up when I get around to it!

hahaha...
we'll, i'm not sure if demi metallics is an "official" term, but i've seen it thrown around...
as for red, there are so many different ways to approach it...
if you look in my gallery, you will see a difference in the armor of my Mephinston, and my BA Sgt. w/powerfist...
one uses more orange, and the other more yellow...
right now i have a Sons of Orar Space Marine on the desk that i'm highlighting the red on using Khardic Flesh (GW Dwarf Flesh)...
right now i am also working on The Butcher from PP, and i'm using the Mcvey method, which is in the painting guide of the Khador army book (since the customer wants the studio scheme)...
the base color is Khador Red Base, which is like GW's Blood Red...
to shade i've used a dark blue and a maroon, Exile Blue and Sanguine Base...
this is highlighted up to orange (Khador Red Highlight), with a final highlight of a peach color mixed from KRH and Menoth White Highlight (an off-white)...
this is then given the 15 layers of very thin Red Ink to bring it all together...
we'll see how it works out by the end of the week...
pretty much everything i've painted this year has been an experiment...
i'm working hard to push my painting beyond studio quality...
when i painted for mini companies, there was always a brief involved, where i had to make minis match the rest of the studio stuff...
there were tight deadlines, and small paychecks...
now that i only work for private collectors, i have the freedom to try out a lot of different techniques, and the time to mess with things that may not work out...
as long as the finished product looks good, it doesn't matter how many screw-ups it takes to get to a rockin' end result...
every mistake, and lesson learned, makes me a better painter...
try one idea, and if it doesn't work out try another idea...
just have fun...
cheers

try drybrushing with shining gold over a black base color and then using a red ink over it. it comes out really well
hard part is finding red ink

Wow, I didn't know there were so many ways to paint red.. So far I've just.. Painted red! Man, I really need to learn how to highlight well..
Frgsinwntr, thanks, I'll try that idea. Good thing I have so many test minis!
Edit: Hmmm.. Demi-Metallics intrigue me.. How do I go about doing this?
Edit edit: Nevermind, figured it out. Science time!

There is alot of good advice in this thread and honestly I don't have any good ideas to help you. But, I can tell you what not to do. Do not go to micheals and buy the folkart metallic bright red; unless of course, you want a metallic pink.

Base black, brush up in gold, wash in red? That could get you out of the pinky realm. I usually brush up my minis in something metallic, like a heavy drybrushing over the black base silver or gold depending on if I am going for 'hot' or 'cool' colors. When I used to do murky camo guardsmen I skipped the metallic drybrush early stage for later just touching up the guns. But for sleek metallic looking armor you just need a light coat of the color you want over the already prepped metallic coat you put on it, and you still get that gleam after you cover it up as long as its a thin coat over it.

Thanks everyone! Man, that tutorial looks good! Thanks! Tons of awesome advice here. I'm definitely picking up some red ink sometime soon. Seems perfect for glazing this sort of stuff. I also mixed up a nice metallic red (1/2 tsp blood red, 1 tsp red gore, 1/2 tsp shining gold, 1/2 tsp dwarf bronze), so I'm gonna try that out first, I think.
