I often despair at the lack of such skills in kids older than you.

Is that the individuals fault or the systems?

Little of column 'A', bit of column 'B'.

Can't teach those without the self discipline to sit down and want to learn.

The irony is that the two kids with diagnosed ADHD (one has Dyslexia as well) in the club both have managed to find a way around their issues through self-discipline.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Eadbreaka, I would never have thought you were 12 from the 'quality' of your posts, congrats.

Although, your - apparent - maturity cannot compare to Reds' story! Makes the job worth doing I expect!

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

...Showing my age, but when I first started wargaming (D&D and Battletech) the internet didn't exist as we know it.

And you only have Democratic civilian leadership to blame for such leaks in our secrets.

Yes, but the first browser wasn't until 93, and I couldn't get a copy off vassal using archie. It's just as well because I don't think it supported games over gopher.

Heh, you're all a bunch of young punks!! When I started (Chess, mid-60s), we just used rocks for our chess pieces. OK, maybe not really, but there was no GW, there was no TSR (D&D), and there most certainly was no home comupter/internet.

That gave me a chuckle! I'm also in the pre-interwebz category, but just barely. I remember my first experience - my friend's father was a businessman with a home computer and frequently used the modem to work at home, but also played games via bbs. Great stuff.

My son was registered with dakka just before his birthday last year, making him 11 at the time, but he's not posted yet. His grammar and spelling isn't the best, but he doesn't txt or 'leet-speak' either.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
