The main problem the lot of you have is that your drawings look quite flat. I would imagine that you don't draw a 'skeleton' first, right? Well, that causes your anatomy to become warped, and also inhibits your ability to add depth to the image, since you don't have a concrete point of reference for the exact positioning of each body part.

It's a mistake many new artists make, and it's something that you should really address. It'll improve your drawings dramatically. Just practice starting with a 'skeleton,' and work your way up to a frame, and then finally to the finished character. A little perspective goes a long way.

On my space marine the big scroll goes to the spaceys left side, while all the purity seals and stuff flows to the right side. slow!

I do my "skeletons" as well, what's more, I draw the muscles (had 2 years of anatomy when I studied SFX) and only then I draw the clothes and/or armours on them.

that space marine is ace grob and when coloured in even better! i got a new one for ya all the perspective is crap and i had to use a camera because my scanner is too small

i use a similar method as well it gives you a good guide for proportion

I can see why you say your old work is "meh", but think on it this way: at best you'll work illustrating books, ads, magazines and so.

At best, I'll be able to make comic books.

Thanks, and I generally work digitally. Sometimes I do pencils and scan as well, but not as much. I can block out ideas a lot quicker on my tablet.

As for who wins, hopefully I can make it an interesting battle

Thanks for the praise(and trust me I am trying to find work in those areas ), but don't put down your own work, just keep at it. It takes a lot of work, time, and practice. Don't ever think you know it all (like I did when I was in college, lol!), and just try to keep learning. Also, doing art every day helps

@ Daedalus and other skilled artists: How would you recommend a noob get into digital media?

Well, I only use the pc to colour my inks, but my advice is "first, get a graphic tablet", you truly don't want to struggle with your mouse.

I happen to have one of those tablets. Next I need to find software and some tutorials for slow kids like me. My wife put something on my computer called "gimp" I belive it's open source software, so the price was right. I don't know if it's any good. I've messed around with it but have no idea what I'm doing.

This is a much simpler one for those of us like warboss spinetwizta who casually play around in Paint and Gimp: Gifsicle http://www.lcdf.org/gifsicle/

If anyone has any casual questions about using the GTK+ Library I can help there to, but this is more of a hobby for me and I have never finished a project with it.

EDIT: This is all open source by the way, and all of it will work on windows platforms (although of the three of them it's ironic that Gifsicle takes the most work to do so) so feel free to go nuts.

I don't do a huge amount of 40k stuff, though I do have some. This one is quite a few years old.



And I have a few 40k related sketches.

1st thing for a digital artist is definitely a tablet of some sort. I have the Wacom Cintiq 12wx, as I have a terrible time working on those tablets you draw on and look at the screen.

Second would be a graphics application. I personally use and prefer photoshop. You can probably find an older version for cheap, not to mention there are "other" ways to get photoshop. However, there are other apps like Painter, Painttool SAI, Gimp, OpenCanvas, ArtRage... all have their good points.

After that, find some digital painting tutorials online to watch and learn, get ImagineFX magazine (lots of good tutorials, etc). Always keep your eyes open for new techniques you can try and learn from.

Also, I have a quandary. What would be a good opponent for a spartan AND a space marine?

those drawings are insane smackcakes that one of the guy on the building is cracking.
