The guy's name was August von Mackensen, he was a German WWI general. A German WWI general with a magnificent, evil hat.

Is it possible for anyone to have more magnificent, evil hat? By all means post pics if you think anything could compete.

The skull on his hat is the symbol of the deaths head hussars, a prussian cavalry unit that goes back at least to the napoleonic era. German military insignia with the skull in it from ww2 had the same derivation.

Hey, magnificent and evil... perhaps more magnificent, but as said earlier it looks bought, not earned and that hurts it on the evil stakes. Hmmm, perhaps it'll take a poll to decide.

Manchu wrote:Isn't Mack's hat from some Brunswickian Napoleonic regiment?

I believe it's from the Prussian Life Hussars. "Life" is basically a poor translation of the German word, they were the Kaiser's bodyguards, but "Guard" is already used by loads of regiments.

Albatross wrote:(sigh)

Why is it always the Germans, and why is it ALWAYS skulls?

I'm not sure why the Prussians started sticking skulls on their hats, but the Nazi hats were a deliberate throw back to old military traditions. The Germans were keen on portraying Nazism as being the distillation of pure German military tradition. There were actually loads of incidents of Nazis turning up to formal events in full suits of plate armour. Seriously. Those guys were bonkers.

Ah, a clever response! Hmmm, certainly evil, but is it magnificent, given I could make that hat out of stuff in my backyard?

But, even if I did make that hat, I couldn't use it to torture our Lord and Saviour, so would it really be the same as the crown of thorns? Is it the hat, or it's purpose that makes it magnificent?

Manchu wrote: image snipped

I can't really see that hat, though I'll point out the technical skill in painting the lady's dress is incredible. Do you have a better picture of that hat?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

And daddy (er . . . Wilhelm II) approves, too:

Never has evil looked so delicate.

I wouldn't say those Hohenzollerns were evil, especially compared to what followed in their wake, but their fashion sense? Well, it clearly bordered on the diabolical.

Not the Hohenzollerns themselves, just riffing on the evil hat.

I'm not sure if this compares but it's certainly "evil" due to the fact that it's a "fashion" atrocity.
