I use to hate running too but after doing so much of it in PE I've gotten use to it (well sort of) I can now mentally put myself in a rhythm blocking out the feeling of exhaustion for long extended periods of time that being said I'm much

better at long-distance runs (endurance) than short-distance runs (speed). I still wouldn't say I like it but I now get a sense of accomplishment every time I do a run, I'm much better at pacing myself than I use to.

I spent a summer training with a buddy. He used to make me run until I threw up. I didn't much like it before, and clearly not so much after.

Swimming got me more sore, but at least I wasn't gasping for air & barfing out my guts at the same time.

Well I think your buddy was defiantly pushing you way beyond you limit. That is just cruel.

It's OK - he was way sore after the biking / swimming days that I led.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

Weighed myself tonight after buying a new scale...

252.2 with shorts and shirt on. Pretty much a BS measurement mid-day with clothes. I'll weigh in again tomorrow morning when I wake up.

10x10 reps 25lb dumbell flys...my chest hurts.
2x15 situps (I need to learn to like abdominal exercises better if I want that sixer)
No running today. Will run tomorrow morning when I get up...maybe get another workout in tomorrow night doing triceps and abs again.

Also, cut the soda. Today was my first day soda free. I had two drinks though. Vodka and water with a few drops of reallemon, it wasnt too bad, I could hang with that. No sugar craving...I expect the headache to begin tomorrow. Perhaps I'll have a coke tomorrow as a reward for running.

I have had a total of three surgeries on my feet and I am still subject to that illbegottin word arthritis.

this was all before I got out of high school. when I graduated I weighed 240 pounds at 6 foot. less then a year later I had it down to 175 pounds. right now about 6 years after the fact I am at 185 with a bmi of 8.5.

I am a frim believer in low impact work outs (and this may sound odd) the diabetic food plane is the best way to stay healthy (my mother has been diabetic since I was knee high). running sucks but the local state parks are great for hicking.

hope that helps

I'm forcibly in the same spot as you Deadshane. Being in the Army, over the past year i have been trying to lose weight, however medical conditions prevent me from running.

through subscriptions to various cycling magazines, i have found out that many Dark beers, while loaded with calories have quite the high levels of B Vitamins, so perhaps as a reward, maybe a couple times a month you could have something like Guiness?

Also, i know you have said your GF is all about the Vegan diet, but even if you are buying produce from the more regular "evil pesticide using" produce growers, it still has basically the same effect for you.

Official weigh-in:

246.2lbs

This officially puts me 47lbs off of my target weight. I need to be an even 200lbs, then work on definition for my stomach.

I may not run this morning since today we're all planning on riding bikes for a little while. I'll definatly do a situp and tricep workout tonight though.

Good luck with it! I went from 265 to 221 in about 4 months, but backslid a bit to a stable 229-231. At 6'4" it makes me a touch on the heavy side still, but it's a lot closer to fit than I was. Ironically, the big motivator was a "Biggest Loser" contest we had at work. $20 buy-in and you weighed in every week. Whoever lost the biggest percentage each week got $20 and then the biggest total loser at the end got the remainder. I ended up winning and scoring about $240 of "F***-around" money. That was actually the biggest motivator for me - every time I was about to indulge I asked myself if the extra helping was going to be worth not having a new Playstation 3.

Biggest things I found:

Start with small changes. I tried a couple of times to make drastic life-style changes and it never ever took. It was easy to change things a little bit at a time though. I began by just watching portions, then improving the quality of my food/drinks, then finally starting a light exercise program (But only after I'd already lost about 20-25 lbs).

Calorie intake is king. I know a lot of folks talk about good calories, bad calories, starvation mode, metabolism, and all that. It may or may not have merit. All I know is the weight ultimately came off when I started keeping track of my calories. If I kept it under 2000 calories, weight came off. If I kept it under 1500, weight came off faster. Didn't matter what I ate, just the numbers. Now, to give some merit to the nutrionists, eating "healthy" food works well because it tends to have such a lower calorie count. You can have a big freakin' salad and still only eat about 400 calories. Eat a meat and cheese sandwich on the other hand and you're almost doomed to 500+.

If you look at the calorie counts/serving sizes of food you learn disturbing things. My big "Oh crap" moment was when I actually looked at how bad crackers were for you. 6 crackers is like 150 calories. That's not counting the cheese or spread or whatever you tend to put on them. I'd regularly dust off the better part of a box/sleeve of crackers and cheese while snacking so that had to go. On the other hand, pickles have like 5 calories a piece, so go nuts.

Don't eat when you're bored. I went from "grazing" when I had little to do to doing a quick weight-training routine (like 15-20 minutes) and it did wonders.

Like a prior poster mentioned, "Nothing tates better than thin". I always reminded myself it was OK to be hungry, especially if dinner was in 45 minutes or so. Pre-dinner snacking was a huge issue for me because the smell of cooking dinner always made me hungry.

Water and black coffee were the only drinks I tried to consume. Coffee is almost free calorie wise (something like 5 calories a cup). Alcohol is murder though. I was a HUGE drinker before - much like the OP. Usually 2 or 3 drinks a night, with some nights going into the teens. I'm not sure about the 60 calories a drink AF mentioned - when I did the math it was much closer to 100 calories straight and 200-250 with the mixer (Tonic water is just as bad as soda). I'm sure I tended to mix my drinks on the strong side too so my 2-3 drinks most nights a week was probably closer to 4-5 if it was hard liquor. Beer was a bit easier to keep track of number-wise, but 3 beers is still nearly 400 calories if you're drinking the light stuff.

Anyway, again, good luck with it. Be careful about slipping into old habits - it's easy to do. Make sure you let your friends and family know you're TRYING to eat better/lose weight. It was a lot easier trying to keep honest when the in-laws had fruits and veggies in the fridge instead of chips and dip and didn't offer beer all the time.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

If you're up to it, find a decent boxing gym and join it. Not one where you have to fight, one that does the exercises as boxers are some of the best conditioned athletes. You'll lose weight fast and they'll push you to keep going, not by berating you but encouraging you.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

Kudo's to making a serious effort at change.

Your plan of attack is a good one. Soda and Alchohal are major things to cut out, and it sounds like between those two you may be cutting out 800-1000 calories a day.

Running is a good start, but if you are going at a pace of 1 mile at a jog/walk in 30 minutes, your not gonna get a lot done. Most people can just plain walk a mile in that time.

If you've got the funds to get an elliptical machine, that might not be a bad place for you to start. It will put a lot less strain on your joints, which sounds like you have right now. It's not as good a work out as straight running, but it is a very good place to start. Put that in front of your tv and you'll find yourself knocking out a half hour in no time at all. Even an hour is easy when you've got something to concentrate on besides the actual physical activity. Once your body gets used to real phsyical activity again, and you shed a few pounds, running will be a lot easier to handle.

If not, then keep doing what your doing, but make sure your expanding your capabilities. Try to run a little further next week. One more block, or maybe get to that 1/2 mile point, and keep jogging on the way back for a bit. You don't have to kill yourself, but pushing yourself a little bit more over time will pay off big.

At anyrate, keep up the work. The biggest obstacle is and will be you. So try your best to keep a positive attitude, even if you aren't seeing immediate results. They will come.

Set realistic goals.
If you are a drinker, don't try and quit cold turkey at first.
Record your average drinks, and reduce them a drink at a time, week by week. Eventually you'll get to Zero.
Second, don't drink ANY POP. Its all poison.
Try switching to flavoured water for a while. Or some kind of Juice, (if you must have more flavour, but thats a lot of sugar too). If your routine's include having a bottle of something in your hand, water is the way to go.
When you get up in the morning, force yourself to do (at a minimum) 25 push-ups, 25 sit-ups, 25 crunches and 25 trunk rotations. You should also do something to this effect before your runs. It'll wake you up and loosen you up and its better than pounding back sugar and caffiene.

When you are eating remember the portion control. No meat bigger than a deck of cards is the rule!
Ditch the junk food like chips and dip, hamburgers and the like for something lighter or healthier. I go with nuts or trail mix.
I think what you are trying to do here is great! I am glad to see that somebody on this sight isn't just trying to improve the quality of his game, but the quality of the gamer. It is very easy to get out of shape and just accept it, (so long as you are happy with yourself that is up to you and no one should judge), but its harder to accept a change is needed and to actually act on it.
Keep up the great attitude and the best of luck to you!

GO deadshane! keep it up dude, I lost 18 kilo's in 6 months just by watching my diet and doing 15 minutes of weights a day, that way it was easy to achieve a small amount of exertion each day and not feel dejected! I have now obviosly gotten much fitter and bought a cross trainer, the best thing ever! no impact on your body and uses nearly all your muscles! i'm busting out 16 kilometres an 35 minutes now and i'm nearly ready to define my six pack! i also turn 30 next week and wanted to lose weight before it became too hard, as I also used to be super fit and loved it too, so much more energy you have, so I honestly comend you on your efforts and hope it all works out for you! lets hope once I reach my goals i don't give myself too much rope again!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
but if there is too much rope hopefully i'll be so fit I can pull a truck with it!

I assure you, it works.

It's mainly due to the satisfying hunger cravings with nicotine (or whatever the active ingredient of whatever you were smoking is). It leaves you with a worse addiction that you would have had otherwise, but it still works. I don't sleep a lot, as I said earlier - the weird thing is that I did an hour of 'jogging' (30 min brisk walking, 30 min running in consecutive 5 minute intervals, about 8 kilometres total) today, and 5km on a rowing machine, weight reps and abdominal exercises, and I'm still not the least bit tired. It's well after midnight here in Oz. I handled the exercise well - I haven't deliberately exercised in years and I'll be doing the same tomorrow easily, if I force myself to sleep anytime soon - but I still haven't sorted out this sleeping thing. I thought it was excess energy, now I just don't know.

Wouldn't recommend loosing more than 2lbs a week. You'll end up skinny fat. That Soda stuff is bad ,bad, bad.

1- water only
2- no added salt no canned foods NO fast food.
3- calorie journal.write all the foods and measures down. You'll soon find you can't really do that unless you.....
4- Dont eat anything unless youve cooked it.

Too much cardio and running will cause your body to think its starving it will begin to become very stingy about burning fat and it will burn your muscles instead.

Watch your knees with the running. Your really not that big but I take it your badly out of shape. Budget your gaming time youll be happier.

Smoking is an appetite suppressant.

While nothing tastes better than thin, healthy is better than cancer.

If you need continuous oral stimulation, eat celery. Celery is negative calories.

And if you're a fattie, the extra dietary fiber will definitely do you good!
