Subject: HELP! I'm a FAT gamer!
|

Sslimey Sslyth
Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

....well, not THAT fat, considering gamers. However, I'm much worse off than I have been.
I'm considering myself severely overweight. This isnt really true, but I'm WAY out of my comfort zone. I've got no qualms eating fat burgers, fried foods, sweets, and hydrate my body with soda. When I get home I'll easily have 2-3 vodka drinks a night. Totally sedentary at this time besides work. 39 year old slowing metabolism doesnt help.
Today, between 245-250lbs. 6'2". 40" waist but wear 42" pants for comfort, can fit in 38" but its a squeeze. Belly weight beginning to be a problem however due to a lower back injury. I herniated disks at L4 and L5 some years ago. I rather blame this injury (I was down and out for over a year) for my lack of fitness. It's easy to say "my back hurts" sit down with a snack and watch star trek.
I used to be much slimmer...about 8-10 years ago I had a healthy diet, rarely ate red meat (it gets disgusting if you're always eating salads), and generally ran up to 5 miles easily due to maintaining SOME level of activity that a couch potato can deal with. I won't lie, I'm a lazy gamer right up there with the rest of us all...that laziness is preventing me from being where I should be...
Around 1998-2002 I hovered at 200-205lbs. 6'2" 32" waist easily for pant size. Runner's build.
Basically, what I'm going to do here is prove that with a little effort even a gamer can look good and not be heinously overweight. I'm gonna do this and make a blog out of it for three reasons:
1. Maybe other gamers (or anyone really) think that they need to do COMPLETE lifestyle changes and arent interested in getting slimmer.
2. I know how to lose weight, but possibly not in the healtiest manner, maybe not even the most effiicient. Feel free to tell me how I'm "doing it wrong". I'll take any tips people have to give me.
3. This 'blog' will encourage me to do it by becomming public. Much like this sort of thing might help someone finish an army, thats what I'm going to do here. I'm obligated now.
THE PLAN:
Has already started. I've began running this week. I've made it out 3 times (at no small effort) and I'm up to running a half mile untimed. It's a slow jog and twice I stopped just a few steps short of 1/2 mile due to a sharp pain in my right foot. A half mile run takes about 30 min (this is a guestimate) to run 1/2 mile and walk back home. After the walk home a quick stretch is your cooldown and it actually feels quite good the next morning when you wake up. Achey, but good. My point is, this takes no time at all. I'm going to continue the 1/2 mile all next week. I may bump up the distance after next week if my comfort level is good. I'll begin to time my workouts now since I want to maintain a log. For now however, THIS IS ALL IT TAKES. 30 min of your time a day....and skipping a day wont hurt and in some cases is good for you.
My running shoes are very old. If I'm able to keep it up thru next week I will reward myself on the 15th of september by going out and buying a pair of NICE running shoes that will actually conform to my running style. I'll only be able to do this after I prove to myself that I'm committed.
I may not run tonight, I may do a quick situp/dumbell routine. Strength training is important for losing weight as well due to muscle using more calories than fat. This sort of thing also gives you a break for your legs. They need to 'heal' after their workouts too.
I'm buying a scale this weekend. I will weigh myself every day (yes, sans clothes you perverts) in order to monitor my progress. I'm wanting a scale that will show more than just a full pound. There is a big difference if Tuesday you weigh 238.8 and Wednesday you weigh 238.0. It's encouraging to see this sort of progress.
Eating/consumption. Here is the big one. I'm looking to be getting some serious help from my GF and she's trying to go Vegan. (her new hero is Alicia Silverstone) I've been the factor holding her back. She's been doing some REALLY interesting meals that are Vegan. I'll keep track of them from here on out and post what they're all about. The crappy part about eating healthy is really all about how EXPENSIVE it is. It's cheap to eat so that you're killing yourself. Boxed mac and cheese and fish sticks are cheap. Eggplant, avocadoes, tomatoes, and fresh organic fruits are NOT. Time to look for produce sales and cut coupons.
To jump start my "diet" (though this isnt going to be a diet, its more of a life change) I'm going to give up drinking. THIS, I think will be the hardest thing I'll have to do. I simply cannot justify the empty calories that alchohol adds to my daily regimen. I've got a bottle of Vodka in the house right now. I'm going to finish it and that will be it for drinking. It will probably be gone within the next week.
Now, I say that this will be a sort of "life change" and I know that sounds like a turn off. The fact of the matter is however that when you're living healthier you're generally a much happier person. When you're not eating healty you dont want the hot-dogs, burgers or any of the other poisons you're fattening yourself with. And if you've never had a "runner's high"...well, thats a reward for exercise that cannot adequatly be described. It makes you look forward to your workouts however.
I may post pics at a later time but for right now I'm not that proud to show off a belly. I'm sure noones interested in looking at an out of shape gamer either so I'll wait until there's actually a result...something to see and noticeable difference. Mainly so people will ignore the "gamer-gut" and instead take away a sense of "geez, that seemed like an easy effort for a big difference."
TARGET:
I'm not going to stop this until I'm able to run a marathon which I'll choose and run at a later date. Also, I've never had definition in my stomach muscles, I've been close, but this time I'm going to do it. I'm getting 6-pack abs. (abdominal strength helps alleviate lower back pain!)
Wish me luck...I'll be back posting here soon.

Gamers and obesity.... this is a timely topic....
I looked into the calorie count on alchoholic beverages since I too like to drink and play games.... Vodka is pretty light. If you mix it with soda water it has something like 60 calories for a normal drink. Alot of the calories in drinks come with mixers, so if you dont mix it with coca cola or grenadine or stuff like that you can pretty much drink as much as you want Beer and Ice Teas however are horrible.....like 100 calories for the beer and 700 (yes 700) for the ice tea. Amazing.
If you ride a bike regularly you cannot stay fat. It's impossible. 5-10 miles a day on a bike, which is about an hour, and you'll slim down fast. It's really easy on your knees too. A good feeling. I lost a good deal of weight this way a few years ago and have pretty much kept it off by avoiding bad foods. It's hard when you're gaming and everyone around you is eating sugar doughnuts and twinkies and whatever.
Just cutting soda or chocolate out of your diet can really add up to alot. A coke is something like 140 calories, sunkist 190.... if you drink 2 or 3 a day you'll definitely put on weight over time. Cutting it out is a pretty simple thing you can do to help. Chocolate is harder but doable.
Hope your plan goes well. Small incrimental steps can really add up over a long time, but instant resolutions and a radical change of life habits over the short term can really be a struggle. Good Luck!

Every Day I start the day off at work with a 44oz Coke from 7-11 (I get them free generally as an LEO).
512 calories
My drink of choice is generally Vanilla Vodka mixed with coke. 2-3 drinks a night generally. Sometimes more.
Yes, soda needs to go.
Thanx for the idea on the bike. It reminded me that I've got an old mongoose mountain bike that I got on the side of the road and was going to restore. It's not the highest quality of bike but I'm betting 50 bucks and a can of spray paint and I wont feel embarassed to ride it. It will definatly be an option if my back/feet dont hold up to running.

Just getting rid of that 44oz in the mornings will def. have an impact. I think you should just take it 1 thing at a time. You know, get rid of that, keep it out of your life for a month, then choose something else..... thats my plan anyway since weight is def. an issue to me too. Yeah the bike can really help..... Good Luck! I was waaayyy overweight when I was a kid it sucks sssssooooo bad. I really hope your plan works out for you.

Suggestion: get a scale that shows body fat percentage. While not very precise, seeing that body fat percentage number go down is very motivational. I know when I work out a lot my body weight goes up from gaining muscle and I got pretty depressed before I got a body fat scale... then I could literally see the "muscle" being put on.
Other than that I have never been a calorie counter but I make it a point to KNOW what everything I eat "costs" in terms of calories, sugar, etc. I still eat stuff that can be deemed "unhealthy" but I am not blindly consuming high calorie stuff.
I am trying to get back onto the exercise wagon too - I wish you the best of luck!

Riding a bike for short distance trips is a great way to bring some fitness into your daily life, as long as you're not riding to the store to get that massive soda.
If you want to eat more veggies, try to start your own garden or take a look for community gardens in your area. The only thing that you will have a hard time growing is things like avocados, which are difficult to grow on a small scale in a productive way. One apple tree will produce upwards of 4 dozen apples per year after the first year or two, sometimes doubling or tripling depending on how well the tree is maintained. One lemon tree can produce enough lemons to make lemonade or salad dressing 3 months of the year, often times 6-9 months of the year, depending on your climate. With enough heat and access to low-cost water, tomatoes can be a really amazing crop. If you like tomatoes growing them will be a great way to get your fix.
Gardening is a small investment and a great way to get some exercise. You can easily reduce the amount of weeding you need to do by mulching the area where you grow your veggies, saving your knees and back from a lot of strain. The limiting factor to growing veggies is the cost of water in your area, in some places the cost combined with your effort will make the product overpriced, in some ways not worth the money or time. When you buy organic vegetables from a farmers market, you are paying for and promoting their use of transportation and other related costs. It is expensive to eat healthy but a bit of elbow grease can bring that cost into line with cheaper, quicker foods.
Another reason that many vegetables are so expensive, is that they are often shipped long distances to provide access to them when out of season in your area. You will find that you are going to have to eat what is in season but there are several ways to extend veggies out of their season, mainly by canning them after preparing veggies in different ways. Either way, if your plan is exercise and a healthy diet, provided you have access to space for gardening, growing your own vegetables is a pretty good way to get both of those things.
Good luck.

Do you have access to a pool? Swimming is absolutely excellent for those with leg difficulties.

As others have said, eat correctly, you have a good game plan, just remember, a habit takes about 30 days to take, so stick with with and will become easier. Also eat smaller portions. One thing many people mess up with, is they forget to eat breakfast, if you eat a good healthy breakfast, you will snack less which will help with the cause. As I am not a vegan, I am not sure what you and GF would eat, but do eat a healthy breakfast.
For working out, many light reps are good. Plus doing yoga or Tai Chi will help with the back pain.
In all cases good luck sir.

Hey! I had this idea first! http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/229265.page Good luck tho, nice to have a brother in arms, so to speak. If you want to protect your back, core stabilisations are much more effective then situps/crunches. Planks, side planks, swiss ball pike etc. etc. are great, though I will admit, they suck ass. Also, if you're foot hurts, try toe pickups. Place five to ten dice on the floor in a pile, and pick them up with the toes of one foot and move them into another pile. Then with the other foot, move them into another pile.

I've just started using a rebounder and I have to say rebounding is excellent. You can keep it up for ages - part of the problem I have with jogging is that I'm quite tall and quite heavy. Not a good combo. It's murder on my knees and back. Rebounding lets you jog for ages, keeping your heartrate up without causing you any pain, or even making you out of breath. Apparently it's mega efficient as well.

I realize I'm a bit late to the party but a strongish gin and tonic has as few calories as you are likely to find in a drink. And, seeing as it's still pretty warm out, we're still in season for them. Allow me to recommend Hendrick's with freshly-sliced cucumbers. In fact, why not put some of those other cucumber slices on a salad for an early dinner and have the drink after a brisk walk toward sundown? With September right around the corner, best turn this idyllic scene into reality sooner rather than later.

Burn more calories then you consume. Consume less, exercise more. Jogging is good, swimming will burn more and is much better on your joints but can be embarrassing for people that are out of shape.
Stick with it.

If you can, try talking to a doctor that specializes in weight loss, or barring that a nutritionist. There are a lot of diet programs out there, and they can usually find one that works for you.
Keeping a blog is a great idea. It gets people to help you stay on track, it also lets you record progress.
I'm about six months into my diet, and the blog has helped alot. Now, while you're on the extreme skinny end of fat gamer, I was at the fat end of fat gamer before (5'11", 432lbs). I'm now under 300lbs with no real end in sight. Weight loss is pretty attainable if you make it a priority and stick with it. Keeping it off is another story.

I second swimming - its low impact so good for your joints (and believe me, your body will thank you for it in later life) and it exercises pretty much all major muscle groups in the body in the same session. It's also excellent cardio-vascular activity which is a priority for weight loss. I concede the point that it may be bad for those who are embarrassed about their image but to be honest, hiding yourself in a pool is probably better than letting it all hang out jogging round the block.

Aspartame/artificial sweetners induce appetite. This could be a double edged sword. One of my sisters made the switch from Coke to Diet Pepsi and put on weight. Also, it was rushed through the FDA in 1981 despite the results of animal testing linking it heavily with brain cancer. I stopped drinking 'Diet Coke' about two years ago and have cut out all soda and have lost about 25 pounds. Water and Black Coffee. Losing weight is a lifestyle change. From my heaviest, I was pushing 295 ish, now I am 207. No soda, no snacks, no food made in factories at all if I can avoid it, no mass produced condements, a lot of meat, eggs, tofu, fish, fruit and vegetables. I avoid bread and pasta too, but only because I love quaffing beer.
Good luck with your weight loss program, Deadshane!

This is why i love my job
Granted, site work isnt the most educated job in the world, it does however have its perks.
Constant labour tends to help me stay in shape, no matter what i eat or drink.
Also, a run before work (or after) helps even more.
In your case, maybe its worth setting up a roster?
Just start off with a small jog or fast walk in the morning / evening.
As your body gets used to that start adding in more distance at a faster pace.
That alone should help alot after a while (i only run 5 miles each morning, but i then go to work and work my ass off all day)
After you have that going well try adding in more intensive things like press-ups, pull-ups or sit-ups.
Again, start off with a small number, then gradually add in more as time goes by.
Keep going with that and it should do fine.
Food wise: Doesent matter what you eat or drink as such, its how much of it you burn off.
If you want to keep eating and drinking alot of calories, just add in more to the roster to balance it.
Im no personal trainer, but im just going by how i stay in shape.
Hope that helps.
ATM im 6'4" and just under 180lbs.

Soda is a bugger to get off.
As a 2 litre per day drinker for 10 years (Coca Cola) I switched down to diet, then reduced volume. All that took about 6 months.
Now I'm on 1-2 cans per day of Coke Zero.... 5 years after the initial 'get off'.
It is a real big shock to the system if you dump it cold turkey.
I disagree with unprocessed food being expensive.
A lettuce, a handful of carrot, half a dozen eggs (To hardboil) and a medium size steak to cook and cut to strips and some salad dressing, throw in some beans and you have a steak and egg salad to eat twice per day for about 3 days at about $15 total. $2.50 per meal is hard to beat.
Also fruit salad: 1 apple, 1 orange, 1 kiwi fruit, and some mixed in low fat yoghurt and you'll be stuffed. I have it once per week as a full meal and I really struggle to get through it.
I lost 20kg 5 years agoby cutting what I ate to 1/3 volume, and started walking 5km every day, and every 2nd or 3rd day I'd jog it, always aiming to beat the previous best time to increase fitness and push myself as the weight dropped off.
It took 4 months of hard work to get there but 5 years on and I weigh the same, run 10km hill course 5 times a week and eat pretty much whatever I want.
Looking at it as a change of life, as you are is probably the best way to do it.
Also if you get hungry just say to yourself...
"Nothing tastes as good as thin" and have a water.

A couple of tips from a really tall guy who has struggled with weight his entire life. Make sure you provide your muscles appropriate rest between exercises, the only muscle group you can work each day and still get the max benefits are your abdominal muscles.
I'm not a nutritionist, but eating too little can be as detrimental as eating too much. If you're eating too little your body will think you're starving and start to eat away at your muscles. You'll lose weight, but not in a good way or your body will think you're starving and start holding on to every single calorie you eat. You need to eat plenty, but make sure it's of the healthy variety. Lots of fruits, nuts, whole grains, vegetables and if you can get away with it, lean meats (chicken and fish). I know your girlfriend is going vegan and you want to as well, just be careful to consume enough protein because if you don't your body isn't going to be able to rebuild those muscles you tear when working out.
Something that helped me a lot was finding exercises that I enjoyed and were beneficial, though to get in great shape you're going to have to do ones you don't want to. For example, I play basketball as often as I can because it's good for cardio and sprinting, but I still do a ton of muscular strength and endurance exercises, which I loathe.

I switched from fulll sodas to diet myself, and have lost a decent bit of weight.
And just be aware of not how much you're eating, but what you're eating. Salad is tasty yum, and so what if the dressing is naughty, the rest isn't so go for it.
Just be aware that results are rarely quick. It takes a concerted effort and campaign of proper dieting to make it stick. You aren't just after a quick fix to drop some pounds, but planning a healthier lifestyle into the future!

QFT. The arvo drink too. I went through a few years of soda-hydration, and I'm still a sugar addict. That is, I want it, but I at least have it under control. I buy myself a 1.25L low-carb Solo every now and then, and it's so disgusting it just puts me off wanting soda. I've never really liked Coke, but was an absolute lemon squash fiend. I still drink too much when I go out (1-2, sometimes three times a week, my night job is in live music... ), but after a pile of beers I come to my senses and get vodka+water+lime... no soda... One problem is that they know what beer I drink at the bar and pour it when they see me coming with an empty glass. This needs to stop.
I'm still a young adult and have never really been fat, but I'm not as fit as I used to be. I actually just joined a gym next door to my new apartment this afternoon.
I was always a champ sprinter, but my cardio has always been garbage too - anything over 400m events were where I stopped bothering. I've always had too much energy and have never done enough with it. That's why I only sleep 5-6 nights in a week at most, and have been this way since I stopped working at manual labour and regularly exercising (did a lot of martial arts as a teen).
With little body fat, I tend to drink a lot before I begin to feel the effects of alcohol, but this doesn't neccesarily mean I'm fit at all. I know I'm not. I know when I start to get back into running tomorrow, I'm going to be absolutely screwed...
I raise a glass of water to ye, Deadshane. Tomorrow it'll be a bottle.

I'm probably exactly your size nowadays.
I was in reasonably good shape until I started my current programming job 11 years ago. Sitting at a screen all day does that, I guess.
Fortunately I'm not hooked on soda. I keep it to a can or two a day, and if it's not diet, it usually doesn't even taste good to me anymore.
A few years back, my wife and I did the South Beach thing. In about a year, I had lost 40 lbs and my wife twice that. We eventually got very sloppy and old habits crept in. I hadn't even exercised much during all this. It's amazing how you can get cravings for something like bread.
We're getting set to start up again after this weekend. Our meals are already gravitating that way. This time, I'm going to start biking as I do it. It seems I either diet or exercise, but not both. Within a couple days, 20 miles is not hard for me to reach. The wife will be back on her treadmill for 1/2 hour jaunts.
My goal is to get down to 180 or so. It's not the 150 I was at out of high school, but it will do. I figure 60 lbs isn't beyond reach.
My son weighs more than I did at his age, but he has practically no fat, and worked out regularly -- something not really available for me at the time. He's in USAF basic right now, so physically, he's prepped rather well for that.

Over the past few months, I have lost at least 10 lbs of fat without a single step of running at all. Probably lost 15 lbs of fat and gained 5 lbs muscle.
I simply work out a bit 5-6x times each week. I keep it cheap, doing pushups / situps / pullups / stretching.
Just do it.

Some people prefer running because setting a destination to run to can sometimes feel more rewarding than reps.
