Thanks guys! This project has been slow and sluggish but not forgotten!
Finally, some updates! Slowly but steadily. The near completion of a commission I put in over at Coolminiornot urged me on to get that big marine finished before I start painting the even bigger guy. 'Cassar' over at CMON is sculpting me a Terminator in the same scale as this FW marine, yay! ^^
So, first up, the bolter & scope, almost there on the bolter, the scope's got some work needed still.
And second, the base. I've got the feeling that's almost done as well but I feel it still needs something. I think I'll apply some more brybrushing here and there, and maybe some weathering powders and static grass. Any other idea's or suggestions?

....and oh my god, you have painted it up amazingly. O_O
I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.
That is shaping up REALLY nice!!!! i cant really add much to what everybody has said. I like the eyes and the salt weathering has given really impressive results so far and i think works best for miniatures ( not really a miniature lol ) of this size. Cant wait to see the finished result!
Cheers guys! I've been beavering away at this to getb it finished asap before I get the new large one, which I commissioned. Although I must admit I've been working like a half-comatose beaver. ^^
The stone cogs are actually segmets of a pilar, the resin shows them with a clear stone structure/
Some progress on the big 'un. The bolter and scope are almost finished. I kept the dagger's simple on purpose as ot's going to be almost completely covered by the hand holding it. Just need to do the lenzes and a few touch-ups here and there.
Oh my god-- er (looks nervously at nearby Commissar), I mean Great Throne of Terra!
This is... fething AMAZING! THIS is what a Space Marine display should look like!
I think my favorite part of this entire project was using the salt crystals to get that weathered paint appearance. Now, it really looks like this guy has been through some tough fights!
My only question is, how come you left the eyelids straight black? Is that intentional, or is this still in progress? Please answer soon.
Also, have you done this with the 1 inch Space marine commanders and such?
I can't scream in the library, so I'll let this guy do it for me.

Ive always wanted to get that SM kit. However 97 pounds translates to around $156 US, thats a bit stiff.
However, if the next few weeks I may be putting in a FW order, so if Dreamforge doesnt have their leviathan ready for production maybe Ill add a big SM to my FW order.
Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too
@Dr Temujin: ROF@ the scream. :-D The eye lenzes are still WIP indeed. I've been keeping that off a bit as they'll need some careful blending...
The salt technique is not particularly suited for smaller mini's but it's possible though. You'd have to use a finer grain of salt and with that comes the risk of it clumping too much together and thus covering too large parts. If done carefully it might work though.
@Mad4Minis: Oh don't hesitate man, that large mini has been an absolute joy to paint. The larger scale offers much more leeway in terms of techniques and execution.
.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And here's some further progress. Roughly three hours worth of work.
First off some liquid mask guyliner, because even the tuffest of the tuff need to look fabulous.
And then, an afternoon's worth of saliva and a pointy young brushling.

Tyranids attract more tang than an astronaut convention. Success is a little more than I already have. Every day, Forever. Until you have nothing.
As Galactic ruler, I promise to be tough but fair. But tough.
"Dangerous terrain where you just die upon rolling a 1 is for sissies. Parts of the board you wont even move your models into because you're physically afraid of being stung by wasps? Welcome to a Tyranid invasion, cue danger music. "
Check out my NSFW Tyranids! Your eyes will burn for days. Team NSFW: Making wargamers deeply uncomfortable since 2011.
Well, it's relatively easy.
-First you have to fixate the paint with a layer of satin varnish. -When that's completely dry, you spray the model copiously with hairspray until it's really wet and while it's still wet (you have to be quick) you sprinkle the salt on.
-Let it dry out
-Then you can spray on your base colour and general highlights.
-Next you rinse the model under cold running water. It's imperative that tit's cold water as warm water will start to disolve the hairspray layer under the paint. The water melts the salt and you just have to make sure you rinse it long enough, as any salt residue will dry up in white spots.
-Last, fixate the whole with another layer of satin varnish.
Sometimes the salt effect can be a nit too prominent and you'll have to touch up lightly here and there.
Cheers guys, I'm glad you're liking it!
I've already been spurred on by a mate to do at least one Golden Daemon competition with it, at least once, somewhere in Europe. But phew, that seems like a whole different challenge indeed...
But in the mean time... I did mention a 'commission' a while ago. Well, I went to pick up something from the post office and just spent the last 15 minutes dissecting bubble wrap like a brain surgeon. And oh joy of joys, every little tiny bit's intact! W00h00!
