Not sure what the heck was going through their minds on this one. It's got to be political, but who the heck did they make happy? Garands are glorified hunting rifles. They're not even all that uncommon/expensive (Yes, I'm aware their price, aliong with every other firearm it seems, is rising).

"Of particular concern is the potential for high capacity magazines"? Really?

It sounds like somebody didn't like the principle of it and raised a stink, and hardly anybody else cared enough to say anything about it. I don't even remember seeing any of the usual hate-filled anti-obama vitriol on the gun boards about this, and usually those guys are so desperate for something to crab about they'll make stuff up.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Which is funny, the M1 carbine comes with 15 or 30 round magazines for .30 cal pistol cartridges.

I can buy a 100 round 5.56 NATO magazine for an AR pattern rifle right now. I think that chicken has flown the coop.

The 30 round clips are much less reliable. The 14 rounders are better, especially if original or made by a quality OEM provider like Fulton or someone. But, with the exception of the Zombiegames Historical Action Shooting competition (or distance shoot of course) they are among the least desired by your average side shootin' gangsta.

IO am sure they'd have to be heavily refurbished to be remotely accurate and reliable. At that point you're talking Springifield Armory / Sig Sauer level pricing. If we're getting down to brass tacks I'd rather a M4 / AK47 clone (which would be mondo cheaper) instead of the M1 carbine or an M1A / AR-10 clone instead of a Garand for true Zombie games fun.

I love the Garand even for its M1 thumb, she'll bite ya if you don't know how to handle her. Hopefully they don't get melted down...at least make 'em inert and donate them to JROTC drill teams

Ah you haven't truly fired the ol girl till shes tried to eat your thumb on at least two seperate occasions

And while we're on the stink about high-cap mags and being dangerous, I can go buy a Saiga with a 30 round magazine right now. There's one in the pawn shop for sale. In the near point-blank ranges of most "gang style" shootings, wouldn't a semi-auto shotgun with 20-30 rounds in the mag be more dangerous? And really, when's the last time you heard about the Bloods employing the use of long-range rifles in a drive-by? I think Mrs. Clinton is still clinging to the trash her husband started way back when...

Pretty sure Mrs. Clinton isn't the one in charge of making decisions for the ATF, State Department, or Justice Department.

When's the last time the person in charge of their department actually made a decision regarding it?

Note: If a political debate breaks out, I will poke fun at you. It's all in good taste, though. No hard feelings and what not.

Edit: Erm...Hillary's the Secretary of State, man. That makes her in charge of the State Department...

Yeah, but the original decision was made by the ATF and Justice.

Not State Department.

The .30 carbine round is not a pistol cartridge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30_Carbine

Only a few handguns were chambered for the .30 carbine.

And rooting around on that Wiki page...there's a statement that may be the reason why they opted to prevent the sale of the carbines(at least).

M1/M2 Carbines are still in use by several military and police forces worldwide, including the IDF.

Wabam. Right there is something where handwringing Justice Department wackadoos might decide "THIS IS A WEAPON OF KILLING POWER!!!111!!".
Add in the fact that both the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine were originally for military use, and they'll have another reason to be more cautious with it.

Meh its a pistol cartridge "Bob." Has the same characteristics as a .357 mag. Further its permitted on most ranges on the "pistol" side (I'ver had this discussion before with rangemasters).

And perception might still play a part, Fraz.

I have to wonder if the ATF used a stock, form letter that was intended to describe AR-15s, etc for their statement though.

Pah! You'll be getting a package soon. Don't worry if the deliverymen look a little...weird. Pointing out that their faces look curiously like a weiner dog with hat and glasses is just insensitive. And no, you may think you hear ticking when you pick up the box, but thats just your imagination chastising you for your insensitivity.

It's got all the down range energy of a pistol cartridge. The only reason its listed with .357 magnum energy levels on impact is its usually tested out of an 18in barrel instead of a 4in one. Yes, it's called the .30 carbine, it's fired from a carbine, but at the end of the day performance wise it's a high end pistol cartridge.

Yep. On the positive it kicks like one from from a carbine (aka no kick).

I have fond memories of the M1 Carbine. It was the first non-.22 weapon I regularly shot. It was also the first cartridge we ever reloaded, which brought the cost down to .22 level.

Never shot one... Even my 7.62X25mm ammo could probably match it. The 7.62X25mm can go through a kevlar helmet whereas a .357 magnum cannot.

Why the hell would the White House know anything about what is an ATF/State Department matter?

Contrary to popular belief, the President doesn't have nearly as much authority or involvement in as much as you think.
