Do you mean the transition from Fifth to Sixth edition, or the change into 2010 Core set?
The 2nd one. I started well after 6th. Mirrodin Block it was at the time, just before they changed the Legendary Rule in Kamigawa (more like CRAPPygawa amirite?).

Dunno, I loved in multiplayer battles doing a Tooth and Nail entwined cost to bring out Kokusho, The Evening Stars and having them hit the graveyard, make everyone lose ten life, and me go up by and obscene number.

True, true. I drifted into legacy and vintage at the end because it was free. I managed to even pull off the legendary Turn 0 win while Flash was unbanned, as well as the 1st turn Kill in standard during Time Spiral.

So, back to the topic of one who enters into mutual obligations with a monarch, usually of military support and mutual protection, in exchange for certain guarantees Four-Tee-Kay.

I have had a quick dig though it, and I really like how sponson weapons are done. It's really nice!

yes playing real 40k is way better but vassal is good for test running armies and playing people from far away. I
like it because i can go home put the kids to bed then get in a game can't do that at local store. it is also something to put on the second monitor when painting

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Just wondering for those using it, would it be usable as a battle report program?

Basically can you place units on the map for each side and then take screenshots. If so I may download it just for that. Although the ability to play folks around the world is pretty tempting.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

As an admitted complete VASSAL-NOOB, Is VASSAL hard to learn?

Is it worth it?

Very much so. Once you get the hang of the Keyboard Shortcuts, it's super dooper easy!

I went from not knowing what Vassal was to having played my first game successfully within a single night with a co-worker who had a good grasp of the gameplay. It's really not very complicated at all. We were then able to get 2 more coworkers to play with us with a minimum of explanation.

It's not quite as fun as real 40k, but it's also much faster to move 90 boyz around on a board, and allows you to try stuff you can't afford to buy (10 nob bikers, etc).

Yes.....

But I'm sitting here at my computer playing it right now. And instead of my back hurting I'm comfortable. And there's no models to pack up, I'm going to close the program and be done.

Oh come on!

A sore back is the 40k player's badge of honor! Besides, I bet you can't even feel it after a few nips out of that bottle of Cap'n.

Whoah- I'd always assumed Vassal was a PC program, never realized it was Java! I'm a Mac guy, so I just assumed everything fun was off-limits .

Gotta figure this out in time for the next Dakka Vassal playoff. Can't wait to put some rubber to the road with all my fellow board-haunters. Making a list right now of who I wanna challenge...

One question for folks here, if you don't mind answering something that's probably in the Vassal documentation: How does the program handle limiting movement ranges? Like, how does it clock how far 6" is on the virtual board?

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

From what I have seen, it uses an arbitary number of pixels as "one inch" and has everything to the correct ratios. There are keys to move models exactly 1" and 6" forward or backwards.

Vassal is great for 40k- getting in games is much quicker and you can play with players all over the world.

It does lose some of the "realism" of TLOS (pretty much everything is area terrain- labeling things as blocking LOS and type of cover [4+, 5+, etc] before game is essential), but otherwise, I'm a fan.

I'd strongly advocate new Vassal-ers to friend DashOfPepper and getting a learning game in with him- he's very friendly and helpful, and once you get the basics down, it's easy to go from there.

Hello Brothers!!!

Well, i tottaly love Vassal, without it i would never got a chance to play 40k (and i would never had bought some minis for me).

So, where can i grab this new version of the module? The link is aparently broken, and i would love to play thunderwolf cavalry instead of khorne blood crushers =D

Oh, and thank for this guys, i would love to help on moduling, but i dont have any ideia of java... (if you want some sprite editors, its like a Hobby for me)

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...
