Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

The people over at Vassal have been working hard and have a new Vassal 40k module, an updated Vassal server, and new and improved sprites!

Check out www.vassal40k.info for links to the latest software.

For anyone living under a bush, Vassal is basically how people from around the world connect to play 40k over their computer! Also great for battle reports, testing army lists and all sorts of other things.

You don't have Windows, Linux or Mac? o.0 It's java based, so it will run on anything. I am running it on linux!

And why post it here? D: No-one reads these forums.

Now I have not been living under a bush (just near it, in the shadow, sipping on a can of super strong cider) and have seen the battle reports generated by Vassal, but can some one explain to me how it works until such time as I can get it downloaded and running?

Is it a shared digital board where you communicate via amother programme or are the 40K rules actually included within the programme?

It's a Digital board. No rules are included or enforced. Two players connect to a central server and move little digital men and pewpew with digital dice!

I still see this getting a C&D if they include any images based from 40k models, as GW will surely see it as an infringement of their IP. They will have to be generic shapes, such as simply the bases.

Didnt they get a C&D for using images of GW models?

So all they have to do is..not.

If they received a C&D, they probably didn't care for it as most C&D sent by GW wouldn't stand in a court of law.

No, it's a fully virtual interactive interface. You take a case of your Warhammer 40,000 miniatures and take a photo of each model. The program then creates a virtual representation of that model, which you can interact with while wearing the special goggles/gloves.

You can then connect over the internet and play games on realistic tables using YOUR OWN models, exactly as if you were playing at your LGS. Its the newest fad.

Oh and you can purchase new models via "staff avatars", computer programs linked to Games Workshop's website.

Its really quite progressive don't you think?

Never take a photo of yourself and scan it in though, otherwise you get sucked into the game Tron style, but they dont give you a super cool suit and OddJobs frisbee

Yes.....

But I'm sitting here at my computer playing it right now. And instead of my back hurting I'm comfortable. And there's no models to pack up, I'm going to close the program and be done.

I felt the same as you. So I just installed it and played around with it for a couple of hours. It may seem daunting at first, but really there is nothing to it! Once I got it, I taught my 8 year old son to use it in about 20 minutes.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

No new Blood Angels sprites makes me sad :(

I wish I knew how to make them. I'd love to contribute to Vassal, it really helped improve my game, being able to play 20+ 40k games a week instead of the normal two.

Huh? I had a look now, I can see a ton of new sprites. New Special Characters, new Sang Guard, new Honour Guard and Blood Talons.

And also you can contrubue. The dude even gives you an email to contribute too.

As they say in MtG, Reading [the card] is tech.

So hey, how bout that vassal league you were talking about a while back Dash? Now that we actually have most of the proper sprites I see it as a possibility.

People seem to be getting confused about the C&D and legality of this. the 40k module got a C&D, but not vassal. Nobody can touch vassal as it itself isn't violating any copyright of any kind.

Similar to how having a NES emulator isn't illegal, but all of the roms are.

Yeah, I used to be big into the online scene (not the paid one, god no, the free vassal like one ), and unsurprisingly I was a rules guru there too.

I stopped after the last batch of rules changed though, because I found them rather silly.

Do you mean the transition from Fifth to Sixth edition, or the change into 2010 Core set?

The 2nd one. I started well after 6th. Mirrodin Block it was at the time, just before they changed the Legendary Rule in Kamigawa (more like CRAPPygawa amirite?).

Also, having read the comments on the vassal site, I am impressed. He/She/They/MONGOOSE! is planning on making an update within a week to fix and add stuff. That's what I call dedication!
