The funny thing about this is people are reading that going on BOLS will put a virus on your computer. Then going and downloading the virus and saying that it they computer was infected.
If I say that hot glue guns are hot, will you go touch a hot glue gun now?\

Have some common sense people!

Anyone with a good anti virus software won't care. (or a good OS for that matter)
Anyway it should be solved by now.

First off, +1 to the commentary suggesting NoScript. I'd also throw Adblock Plus in there, but websites tend not to like that one

Second, Gwar! is a Linux nerd??? In that case, Gwar: Sudo admit fluff is rules.

sudo aptitude install raw-5.0

And of course:

So, any update? Is BOLS safe again?

I just wrote to Bigred at BoLS and asked him if he's doing anything to mitigate the problem with infected ads. I also directed him to this discussion about the problem. I've had problems with it myself this year, which is not making it easy for me to contribute my occasional hobby articles to his site.

EDIT: And here's the response from Bigred regarding the ads being infected with viruses:

This is an issue that hit alls the big agencies during the holiday season.

They are all working on hunting down the malware operators as we speak.

If anyone got hit and has a specific issue they need to email us with their problem and we can start to track it down and pass the info onto the agencies.

These operators are very sneaky and often only geotarget overseas operators.

Fresh-Faced New User

Hi folks,

I'd like to thank Brass for pointing this thread out to me. We have no reports from any of our users on this issue either on the main BoLS emailbox or the Lounge.

As I pointed out, the cutting edge war that's been going on for the past year is between the malware operators and the ad agencies who are constantly trying to ID an kill them before they get to the public.

Often these guys make their stuff extra hard to nail down by only geo-targeting folks in narrow geographic locations or at odd hours. If anybody got hit, please email me your details at belloflostsouls@gmail.com

Give basic info on where you are in the world, OS/browser you're running, what behavior you saw, and any other info you may have gotten. It usually doesn't take the agencies long to isolate and purge the offenders once they get some info to know where to start looking.

Also note that the big agencies are used by everyone under the sun, so no matter where you go, make sure you security updates are current and your browser is up to date. I heard the nytimes.com got hit earlier this year. As others have said, having a current OS with all the updates and the latest browser version tends to deal with 99% of this stuff.

Thanks again guys, and I apologize for any inconvenience,

-bigred
