It's likely that one of their random advertisers has a virus or trojan slipped into the add. It's happened elsewhere and there isn't much they can do about it besides making sure they have reputable ads or ad service, and secure servers.

For BOLS as well as another site I like but that frequently is attacked, I:

1.) installed a Firefox addon called Noscript, which by default blocks any scripting, and then
2.) I then checked "Scripts allowed Globally", which essentially disables the addon, and then
3.) explictly right clicked on both sites and set to "untrusted" which gives the desired result of blacklisting any scripting on only those two sites.

You could stop at step 1, which is the safest, but it also breaks a lot of sites horribly, and I think this is a good compromise. I also suggest Adblock Plus, and then using the dropdown menu on the ABP icon to allow ads on trusted sites; i.e. I allow ads from DakkaDakka, Consumerist, and a few other sites.

A very common misconception.

Firstly, there are many great games that are natively made for Linux.
Secondly, almost every windows game ever made ever can be played via WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator), which is a compatibility layer that allows Windows program to run on Linux and several other OS.
Thirdly, just because you use Linux doesn't mean everything has to be Open Source. There are lots of non-Open Source programs and drivers for Linux (I myself am using ATi Drivers, Broadcom Drivers and Brother drivers), which can be legally used just the same as any windows user. The difference is that Linux users have the OPTION of using a made from scratch open source version, whereas Windows users do not.
Fourthly, while compiling software was indeed daunting 10 years ago, almost all modern software can be compiled with 3 simple commands - ./configure, make, make install
Fifthly, Linux isn't "Protected from Viruses". The reason it doesn't suffer from Viruses and Malware is a combination of being a better designed OS, much harder to exploit and do pretty much anything without the users knowledge and (as much as it pains me) low market share. In short, if you up a Linux machine, it's your own damn fault.

I love NoScript. I had heard about it a while back and put it in and its awesome. That and flash and ad block means I don't see much of nothing regarding ads, and when I do...they get added to the blocker.

I actually enabled ads on Dakka even as a DCM with ABP as this is possibly the only site on the whole of the internets where the ads actually are relevant to my interests.

Yep, I've used the ads here to jump to a few sites straight away. Wayland certainly being one of them. (you can quote that to Wayland if you like lego/yak).

Poor old GMM Studios ad always seems borked though...

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Considering BoLS rarely has anything of value, content-wise, is it really a loss to skip it? The vast majority of their articles are 2-3 paragraph "what do you think" crap, recycling of rumors from peeps like Kroothawk, crappy army lists, or articles bitching about how the 5th edition has turned against their 4th edition armies. Every so rarely you actually get a decent editorial from someone like Goatboy, but it gets lost in the miasma of junk. Meh. Meh, I tell you.
