The thing is, however, that I didn't really truescale him - not a lot anyway. Just a bit more bulk to the chest, but apart from that what I did was to keep one leg straight and change the pose to a more up-right one. This makes him about 1 cm taller than the regular Artemis.
But as mentioned before the judges were after clean painting and striking colour schemes. And in this setup an almost purely black marine is just a hard choice with bad odds.
I don't really believe in conspirity-theories - I have spoken so several of the judges on various occasions and I personally don't have major issues with the judging. True - the judging seems to be moving more towards painting, and less to conversion these years, but that is just the terms then.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

If not win the open competition you still will get to the top 3 (my guess).

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

This is a sensational mini.
Congrats on the final cut, leagues ahead of anything I could hope to do.
One of the slayer sword winners here in Oz once told me (when we were setting up for best painted army at a WHFB tourney) to never ever, enter a primarily black model as people end up walking straight past it.
Obvioulsy at GD you are going to get much closer judging, but there is only so much shading and blending you can do to black.

Yeah, I know. But that was part of the challenge - to make a black model look good. The main goal was to make something that looked sinister and hard. I saw this troop type the first time in the mid-90s where they were brightcoloured, and I wanted to see if I could change this into the new gritty and dark look of 40K.
A judge afterwards told me that he was quite sure it would have placed in the large scale category. But as I have written before trophy or not isn't that big an issue.

I really like your marine. I am about to do some black marines so seeing yours has really helped with a few things. I just wanted to ask about the dirt weathering, is it just paint or pigment powder or a mixture of both?

Dirt/shading was done using a few tricks:
- A really dark brown as the deepest shade. Adds some dept to the black - more than regular black.
- Vallejo liquid mask for scratches as explained somewhere in the thread.
- pigment (MIG African Earth) brushed onto the feet of the finished paintjob.
