Been Around the Block

Greetings,
Migsula kindly asked me to post the images of my recent project here, so here goes:
This is my Open competition entry from Golden Demon UK 2010. The model made it to the final, but failed to place.
The model is a heavily converted Artemis model - a large scale model close to 8 cms tall from feet to top of backpack.
The model took about 2 months of evenings to model and paint and I am dead-proud of the result.
Themewise I wanted to create a black and sinister Space Marine. The Death Company theme allows me to do a beserker-warrior as well as adding lots of ornate details and applying some interesting painting techniques. I also wanted to emphasize how large marines are and therefore I added a whole lot of human skulls to the base to add a mark of scale to the model. The battle-damage and weathering was created using MIG-pigments and masking technique usning a paint-on liquid latex from Vallejo.
- more pictures on my personal website: http://www.jrn-works.dk
I hope you'll appreciate seeing the model.
Thanks,
JRN

Awesome. I think it is such a stunningly understated and stylish piece. To me, the "gold winner" in large scale category. I think going against studio studs was a bold move and ultimately showed some shortcomings in the judging process.
I'm surprised how well the square base works - better and better every time I see it.

That's very nice indeed. Good idea on the scaling using the skulls on the base.

The proportions are just what I envisage a Space Marine to be. The true scale 40k ones are getting close. I've tried doing one myself following the example set by you Migs; so I know how hard it is.
I guess it's the larger scale that allows it in the end. There actually looks like there is someone inside the suit that can move properly. From what I've seen of the new Ultramarines movie, they seem to have failed somewhat in terms of realistic movement and proportion and the real suits that have been made are enthusiastic but laughable representations.
I guess this is just my long way of saying that this is a very inspirational piece. If people were to model their efforts after this then Space Marines would be done justice like the imagery rightly deserves.
Oh, and the painting and weathering are top notch. Nice work sir!

Great job - the whole piece stands together really well.
Love the weathering and the conversion - how much time did it take just to get all the deathwatch iconography off??
Also what did you use to do it (as I am planning on converting that model into a plague marine)?
Ta for sharing & welcome to the site - I will be browsing your site for any other juicy titbits!! Automatically Appended Next Post: Just been - love the mutie gang!

That's brilliant. I clocked this on Games Day itself and loved the way you've got a very realistic finish to the guy yet it still has the vibrant red of the 2nd edition Death Company artwork. Did you get any feedback from the judges on why the others pipped you?

Thanks all for the warm welcome and kind comments.
I am especially happy about the comments about true-scale and that the relatively understated expression is valued here.
About the deathwatch iconografy I scraped, carved, and used a dremmel. Also, and this is the most important bit - I sculpted lots of new stuff - some of this over the excisting armour, making the marine bigger and bulkier. I have got no pre-paint pictures to show, but I can say as much as on both arms 2/3 is greenstuff, and the whole chestpiece is greenstuff modelled over the (slightly carved away) eagle and btw modelled up to the MK8 collar. Thus the chest is bigger and the simplicity of the design - the singular red gem and the rivets marks the size of the chest armour better than the ornate eagle design.
About the judging it is obviously that the judges were after clean and striking painting on the day rather than conversions. OR rather painting first, conversions second seemed to be the way. One can argue back and forth, but I decided the moment I put the model into the category that I would not regret the decision and I don't. I feel I have produced one of my best pieces to this day and that still counts in my book. That said, if I make it to GD 2011 I already have my Large scale entry ready!
Oh, @ bubber: A nurgle marine would be great to see in this scale - do remember to make him walk like a plaque marine instead of the running pose. That was one of my main things about converting Artimis - reposing the feet and bulk of the model into a more dramatic, heavy, and solid kind of running pose. Sounds like a BIG project!

That is some awesome work. It's great to see someone but so much love and attention into a single model. I would find it hard to dedicate such a long time to a single project . . . Hell I find it hard to dedicate a single day to a single project . . . But that really is a thing of beauty.
On the judging. I can understand why they put painting first, as it is essentially a painting competition, not a modelling one. But when something has been so beautifully remodelled, and painted as well as that. Well I'm surprised you didn't medal. Having seen the Open Competition Medallar models, I must say I would have put you in there. But then what do I know? I'm a lazy student

I've nothing to say that hasn't been said before so let me simply say its beautiful.
I imagine the judges didn't let is get to the final because you true/art scaled it. When ever I've spoken to any GW employee they have real issues with true scale.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

...yep, I could tell and that means I can really appreciate how much conversion work went into making this!
Really, really nice model. You should be very proud of it.
I'd say the only reason it didn't win is because it isn't super-highlighted/shaded enough. That's certainly not a critique of the model (as I think it looks just fine), but more a critique on the winning entries to GDs lately.
