Calas: Luckily I won't be ordering much from Forgeworld. I'm in NZ so our dollar is complete crap, as such it costs a small fortune to purchase FW stuff. Blessing in disguise maybe? Heh.

Mask/Tony: Thanks guys! I've followed a lot of your work and love it so that means alot.

Nice work on your minis, I don't think your skills are as poor as you led us to believe, the test mini is pretty nice to me!

As for the Dusk Raiders, don't forget that the Apothecary (can't remember his name) chose to forfeit his martial standings in favour of medicae & finding an antidote to Nurgle's afflictions...

Anyway, your idea & fluff deserve some attention, so I'll be following this thread for sure!

YGG: Hopefully I won't have forgotten how to paint like that by the time I finish posing/converting this lot! Cheers for the Kudos! Yes, Varren is a difficult one.. I want an apothecary as I have a plan for a command squad featuring the named char's left alive at the end. Unfortunately as mentioned he's no longer in service which is bummer.. having said that I'm putting in a MOTF so I'm already changing that up a little saying he was upskilled from an existing techmarine. We shall have to see how it all pans out.

On to the fruits of my labour. They're still a little untidy and require a little cleanup but for the most part they're complete.

Poppa Squat:
I started with a crouching marine because I foolishly assumed this would be an easy task. I soon however learnt (via much anger, depression and cyclic violence towards inanimate plastic objects) that this was not the case. After much consideration and actually thinking the total image through I decided on a combat squat with knee resting on a rock/mud pile/log. The marine looks a little odd without his resin base to kneel on but I'm still working on that so.. yeah.

Orders recieved:
I wanted a static, mid action moment to be captured for this marine. I wanted something instantly recognisable, also it was a great excuse to really push the limits on what I could do with the hand and arm repositioning. I wanted the legs to be static to show he'd be focusing on the comm transmission but in hindsight I should have modified the standard pose a little at least.. oh well.. live and learn! It's a little hard to see in the pic but his helmet is actually facing down and to his right in an attempt to show that he's trying to lean into the comm and hear what it's saying. I may go back and adjust the head a little more to reflect this better..

Next on the block is a walking marine with one arm aiming a bolter. Should be interesting! However it'll be another week before I complete that one as I'm back off to Oz. C&C welcome and encouraged as always

Wow, great poses!!

Didn't you wonder why we don't see many Marines kneeling or crouching?!? I guess you figured out now!!!

Varren... Couldn't put a name on him... Thanks for recalling it! He was my favourite character in the novel... Maybe you could try and use him as an Inquisitor with the Allies rules, without his power armour but lots of gear to show his hatred of Daemons & focus on Medicae? That way you'd be able to use him, not as a battle-monster, but as a support character? You could fluff it out by pretending he's getting along the Dusk Raiders in search of information / samples about Nurgle's afflictions...

But that doesn't really solve your "ordinary" Command Squad Apothecary problem... Plus, I didn't really get your idea of the MoTF... Do you plan on including a Techmarine in the command squad, that would be an Apothecary counts-as?

You're not wrong on the crouching thing. Very difficuly to get a natural pose in. Glad you like the poses though!

With the MOTF and apoth we'll have to see what I come up with. I havent thought supporting fluff for that through yet. I plan to have a MOTF leading my smaller army of dusk raiders then eventually create the army commander and command squad when I expand on my first 1000 points.

Aherian: Varren I believe his name is. In a post up higher. I won't be featuring Garro, there's already going to be too much fluff/he's too central to fluff to mess with. I will hopefully however be moving on to all the other named DG in FoTE .

Ah. Monkeh. Such a similar tale to my own...

But you have much better conversion skills...and I had no long walks on the beach.

Looking really good, and I like the idea. I don't know if have looked already, but you might want to start looking into some of the pre-heresy blogs that abound....

Time for the next installment!

Calm within the firestorm:
For this one I wanted the appearance of someone calming doing what needed to be done in an area that people typically werent calm in. I wanted him to be walking to represent this, I didnt want overly exagerated movements or positions. I wanted it to be near neutral. He's meant to be calming striding through gunfire while picking his shots at targets, ewoks passersby and door to door salesmen.

Lessons learnt this time?
*The feet are frustrating! Re-creating them isnt as easy as my subconcious would have you (and unfortuantely me!) believe.
*The walking pose is TOO calm. I should have kept the left leg as I have but instead of a raised heel maybe bend the knee and have the foot flat with toes bent (basically later in his gait pattern).
*THE HIPS ARE ESSENTIAL! Turns out my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructers were right all along! Originally I assumed the hips were just something else that I had to alter on my way and spent the most time focusing on the ends of the apendages as well as the knees/elbows. Really though the hips are the main mover, if you don't get them set up right then the body's alignment is all out of whack, the legs don't match up properly and his balance is all shot to hell (see slight gangsta lean in this one).

Still have a few ideas, not sure which one to action for the next one. One more trooper then it's time for the sarg!

Feet are the hardest for me as well, I ended up cutting off a pair and making a mould for them, then I can cast a new pair whenever I need them, definitely saves rebuilding them in GS!

I agree with your hip comments as well, I end up pinning my legs and torsos and then posing and reposing them quite a lot before I finally glue them. That said like all areas of converting it is practice that allows you to turn a vision into a model, for every model I get exactly how I want it I still screw up 2 or 3

Great to see someone putting so much attention an effort into their models, Keep it up!

Thanks Mang/wolf/BH

Cast feet! .. oh.. my.. god. That's an awesome idea! The trick is cleanly extracting a pair though. Once I have them I could do walking ones, running ones etc. It would mean that I wouldnt have to prematurely attach legs etc to build them either. Any tips BH?

I sacrificed a pair of SM legs to get a clean set of feet, carved away the ankle till I had what I wanted, I left quite a stub on the feet so that I could sand and shape them to fit the lower leg. I drill into the heel of the feet I want to get rid of then carve away the rest of the foot, stopping at the edge of the greaves, this leaves a socket for the cast feet to fit into and lets you experiment a bit with how you want it to look.

Check out my casting tutorial

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307451.page

It has some info in the Original Post about where to get casting materials in different countries, might be of help.

Can I suggest getting hold of some assault marine legs and carving off a set of left and right "bent" running feet, I always have to build mine for conversion work and are mould for some would come in really handy, any questions let me know

Heheh I'm unashamed to say that it was your casting tutorial that really gave the idea of doing this project mate!

Hmm, valid point on the assault legs. Will have to track some down. Yeah, that definately sounds like the way to go. Given theres only really 10-15 more marines left for the immediate force I'm doing before painting I guess I'll see how it goes for now. For the remainding part of the army I do after my next couple of projects then I'll have to seriously look at that..

Coverfire:
Given I learnt some valuable lessons from my previous model I wanted to get straight back into the walking pose to see if I could pull it off more believably. I won't say I'm satisfied with the results, but it's definately a step in the right direction. Same feel as the previous marine, I wanted a 'walking through firefight' feel but opted to have him shooting from the hip to provide cover fire.. or something. I'm aware the head's all cockeyed, the greenstuff at his neck was still drying when I took photo's and I bumped his tiny noggin', in my zealous mission to update this blog, it's since been corrected.

Lessons learnt this time?
*Feet are much easier to construct with the assistance of plasticard!
*Dryer greenstuff is better greenstuff! Accidentally stumbled over a mix of greenstuff using a lot more blue than usual that has proven to be much both much easier to use but also holds surface and lines much better when drying! Yay!
*I do better with static poses than dynamic ones.

Need feedback guys, especially around the walking pose, legs too bent? Does it make logical sense? Do those boots make his ass look fat?

Looks good bro, I see you are discovering how unrealistic the thigh and knee joints can be, filling them in with the ribbing really shows up how hard it would be for these guys to move!

As for the walk pose its good, and surprisingly just as hard to get right a running or jumping pose.

Agreed entirely, next time I'm doing some hip/leg repositioning I'm going to file down the top of the thigh's to hopefully fix some of the awkwardness. I think by angling the top of the thigh I can pull out some of that huge gap. It would be so horrible to move in this armor! No wonder they could never outrun me when I chased them along the beach at night like a frothing looney... I mean.. uhm.. walked on the beach totally consensually.

I also realised I havent done any other variations of armour (leg wise) so I'm going to mix it up and start doing some other marks for the next few marines.

I found that cutting the leg at the knee, rotating the thigh a bit and adding ribbing at the knee I didn't have to add so much ribbing at the top of the thigh...hope that makes sense

Another one for the pile.. and now it starts to get interesting! My progress has been slowed dramatically by my shoulder surgery rehab and foolishly picking up a copy of dawn of war 2 and chaos rising. Turns out sleep deprivation makes everything WAY MORE AWESOME. That, or it's the red bull.. reedddd bullll..redo bulla.

Vet Sergeant 1:
As you can see I dispensed with the witty catch phrase names for this one.. simply because I can't think of anything remotely awesome that wasnt 'Funny leg lifty pointy guy'. Decided to have a crack at some armor variation in this one. Went for a quasi-mk.3 style. I like how it came out.. possibly next time I'll loose the giant rivets. My only real option for decent rivets is styrene till I can find some glass beads or something here in NZ or Oz. It's hard to tell in the smaller pic, but I've actually carved and angled each of the rear plates towards the knee, click and hit the gallery to have a look at it. Anyways, have a gander and please let me know what you think.
BH: Much easier with the leg this time, followed your advice on knee movement rather than hip placement. Worked much better I think!

Thats pretty badass. I like the angled plates on the back of the leg, and I like the studs.
