One day i have to try that!

Really?

There is much evidence that many of the more recognisable tartans seen today are in fact creations of Scottish and English tailors during the reign of Queen Victoria.

I wore a great kilt a few times long ago... the old fashioned kind where it's just a long length of fabric & you fold all the pleating yourself each time you put it on. Looks cool when it's on but getting it on is totally undignified.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Apparently there is a Japanese otaku designed tartan, which has quite an irregular pattern.

You could always fall back to one of the universal tartans, like Black Watch (http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails.aspx?ref=277),
Hunting Stewart(http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails.aspx?ref=3934), or Jacobite(http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails.aspx?ref=1873)
as indicated here

Well I might be glad I appealed to your prejudices if I could care any less.

Trust you to counter being brought up on that shocking bit of ignorance earlier with personal drivel.

...yes. And then the article goes on to explain the opposite. I guess you just read the first bit when you brought that up as evidence to support your comment then?

It's one of the joys of kilt wearing. Sir Sean, having worn a kilt on many occasions, finally felt able to move on to a really silly outfit.

As a proud owner of 3 Utilikilts and one blackwatch kilt, I wear my kilts with pride usually on a daily basis. I can not speak for Japanese girls, but I know for a fact that Chinese girls love a guy in a kilt.

I blame dakka for inspiring me to possibly blow money on a kilt! It's all your guy's fault if I go broke, so I'll happily take donations to the Rubiksnoob Kilt Fund

I paid around $80 for mine at http://www.sportkilt.com. It's not wool, but it is washable and still looks good. And since they're based out of California, you won't have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. Also, they have excellent customer service.

I am almost certain NO ONE thinks people who wear the black watch kilt is actually from it unless during a military display.

Considering it is just the Campbell design but in darker shades and is oh so commonly wore by people it is unreal and most people do not even know the name of it.

I wear a my family kilt at special occasions and when i go to the scotland games.

Also I am pretty (very) sure the only 'open' kilts are black watch and campbell, the rest being an insult to wear unless part of the 'family'.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

Hang on... This hasn't been sufficiently explained.

Kilts are being said to have been invented(used in Scotland and whatnot) somewhere between the 15th-19th centuries?

So is Braveheart just completely full of nonsense on this whole issue or what?

There are pictograms of what are believed to be kilts from the 9th/10th century in Scotland.

The modern, premade kilt (already pleated and sown) is from the Victorian re-invention as are most of the modern tartans. Having said that most clans will have what is known as the 'ancient' pattern which is the much earlier clan design.

I personally have a Clanranald ancient plaid (what some of you seem to call a great kilt) for special occasions and a plain plaid that I used to wear for reenactment. Having worn the plaid in all weathers I can vouch for the warmth and versatility of it...

Not quite. It's disrespectful to wear the tartan of a family you do not belong to, you can still wear a universal tartan or otherwise. Pretty much every state in the US has it's own tartan for example. These days nobody cares though.

I was meaning to the people that actually care about the subject (pretty damn sure no one in my town would give a hoot if i asked them)
and yes braveheart was riddled with them, battle of Stirling bridge comes to mind. Oh and the fact there was a white transit van in it at one point

Yeh I actually agree. I am proud to have a family tartan to my name, everyone else exploiting it designing their own tartans kind of dumbs that down.

Also the current Scottish flag which in braveheart they have painted on their faces was established long after when the film takes place.
