Well I've been accused of being a sockpuppet simply because I happened to agree with someone on a couple of issues at the same time. I don't think it's an appropriate accusation to make on the open forum and is tantamount to trolling. If someone has a concern about a specific poster then take it to the mods privately, bandying around accusations of that nature to discredit someone should warrant disciplinary action.

That's my serious contribution to this thread.

I have seen free-willed users be turned into sock puppets because they spent too much time in YMDC. And please, do not confuse sock puppets with the band Meat Puppets (I heartily recommend their 1991 album, Forbidden Places).

On a more serious note, I would wager the last digit of my left pinky that the sock puppet accounts belong to those users, typically, with the higher total post counts on their "home" account.

Does this announcement mean that the MODs who have sockpuppet accounts are going to cease using them, or like usual are the ones who are supposed to enforce the rules here above them?

Actions taken against individual users are not discussed publicly.

If you have a concern about a moderator with a sock puppet account, you should email the administrators of the site.

Keep in mind that "sock puppet" has come to refer to, pretty much, all "multi-accounting." That being the case, "nearly always" is an appropriate disclaimer.

You see, it's not unheard of for people to start a second account simply because they haven't visited the site, and forgot their password. I have experienced that on Bartertown more times than I can tell you. Rather than inquire via email, they want the instant gratification of getting on the site & posting, etc.

While individuals like that STILL deserve a good, firm "talking to," a ban is far too extreme a measure. it's the true "Sock Puppets" who deserve (and receive) the bans.

Before you guys go off insulting the Mods/Admin/Site, you really should consider all the facts of the situation.

It is VERY easy to determine who is and is not a Sock Puppet account.

Mostly for technical reasons, and also because most of them are really not that well disguised at all.

I'd love to know who the Mod Sock Puppet accounts are though...

And you guys can probably just do an IP search on anyone you suspect, bit like we can at the other site I post at.

If you honestly believe there are moderators using sock puppet accounts to create havoc, feel free to PM me your suspicions and I can easily find out whether this has been occurring and put a stop to it.

Ya know, assuming you don't have something periodically searching recent posts for duplicate IPs between multiple recent logins, perhaps something that could be done is listing the IP that a given post is being made from next to the time of post or something like that. I've seen that done on multiple forums and it should be relatively trivial to implement. This would increase the ability to self-monitor the situation and obvious violations would be easily identified by users, who could then report it. This would take some of the burden off from MODs and would generate more of a passive stigma against sockpuppeting.

As I wrote the above, I came up with a good, largely hypothetical question: Without going too much into what metrics you use to determine who's a sockpuppet, what if you have two dakkites who are roommates, sharing the same internet connection? They'd both show up as the same IP address, and at least, by the above metric, be the same person... perhaps this is why things SHOULDN'T be done my way.

Could always interrogate them and get their mac addresses!

As long as something is done about those accounts that shamelessly promote those podcasts with the constant brown nosing and "best show evar" comments.
