I had a Siberian Husky several years ago,she had been my constant companion for almost 8 years until she was struck by a car.
I was absolutely devastated by her having to be put down, and to this day find it difficult to "warm up" to new pets.
Condolences to you for the loss of your cat.

Youch, that sucks man. My mother had a cat that was struck by a car, and survived for a good 45 minutes. My brother and I tried getting him to a vet, but he died on the ride there. Only time I felt bad for a pet, the guy was in so much pain, and I was in a car, wasnt too much I could do. We should of stayed home and just shot the little guy. Would of been over fast.

My sister is crying her eyes out. We'll probably buy a new cat in a few months.

Also, sorry to hear about your losses folks. Pets really are like family members.

Both my last cat and my Wife's cat lived long lives.
Mine got to 22 years old (had him from a week-old kitten) and the wife's one got to about the same.

Mine died of old age. Just lay down and died one day.
The wife's cat was riddled with tumours and stank like a week-old corpse (it was put down).

She was more upset about the fact that she heard about it third hand (her dad took it to the vet - it lived with the in-laws). Her dad forgot to tell her.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

It's nice that you you feel something strong enough when a 'friend' passes, and even talking on dakka and finding that a lot of us have similar tales of friends lost can help ease the pain, and this way you can remember your cat fondly and share the good times with us! I actually love my dogs more than i love some people! (no suprise to those who know me) and i would be an absolute wreck if anything happened to them, especially my big boy! I hope you can think of the funny things he did and feel grateful that he had been in your life for you to experience having him around and to love! i'm sorry for your loss though, it's never easy. chin up.

Forever alone

A couple of years ago, we had an overweight lurcher called Gromit. Big, gentle, greedy and lazy. At some point, he stopped eating, vomited bile and wouldn't sleep. The vet couldn't see anything wrong with his stomach, and a week or so later he died in his sleep. I think he might have had heart problems or something.

A few months later, his mother's arthritis got so severe that she couldn't even stand up without hurting herself. She'd never been active since she had a litter, so that was probably to blame. We had her put to sleep and buried her next to Gromit.

And then there were two.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I wanna go back to New Jersey

I know this isn't something like a bird, cat, dog, or hamster, or anything mentioned above, but in my backyard our family had a tree. It has been sitting in the backyard of our property long before we had ever bought it and has been there for the entire time we've lived here being the second largest thing there, the signature centerpiece and most characterful thing of the backyard. It was cut down just this week because it hadn't grown more than ten leaves in the past year and showing signs of dangerous weakness in recent storms.

It now leaves an immodestly empty space in the skyline of the yard and in my heart.

My family had a shar pei named fuzzy. She was the best dog I ever want, she never barked or was agressive. She would always be in a chill mood and liked to lay on the couch with me. All in all the best dog.

One day a someone broke in to our house, that someone had left the door open and she left the house. We found her body on a street two blocks from where I lived, it was the worst day of my life. I could not stop crying for the entire night. Ever since that I just can't put myself to get another dog. I hope Fuzzy is doing fine where ever she might be.

We had a dog with a collapsed trachea, she would hack and hack to breath and after about two years of it she couldnt hack anymore and suffocated. As she was always afraid of me for some reason I never really was attached but everyone else was sad.

Now, when our 17 year old cat goes, I'll prolly be in tears. She was just a couple of weeks when we got her, I was 3, and she's the sweetest most loving cat I've ever seen. I mean, I have no memories of what life was like before we got her. The kind of cat the sits at your door and meows until she can get in when you aren't feeling well or curls up next to you when you have a bad night. When the day comes, she will join the dog and the dog before her in the small cemetary in our back yard. Though at this rate, she'll be at the drinking age before she goes as she's still in fairly good health.

My godfather had a cat that got her left back leg run over, fought off two Labradors at age 21, lost an eye to an infection and was the sweetest cat ever. Finally died of old age at 22. I loved that cat like it was mine though.

It's never easy.

Got a dog in Japan about 15 years ago. Just a tiny little puppy, still to young to even be away from her mom. Her litter had been abandoned by whoever owned the mother.

Had her until she turned 14. She'd been progressively getting worse since she turned 10. Something got into her, and she got chewy. She even chewed her own tail off.

Finally had to put her down last fall. Buried her myself. It was sad, but kind of relieving as well. It was time for her to go, she was just beyond finding any joy in life anymore.

My cat Siouxsie was 16 when I finally took her to the vet to be put down. She had become blind, her back legs were failing and her kidneys packed in. I took her to the vet and held her when they gave her the injection, she purred and was content in my arms when she passed away. It's a difficult thing to do, it hurts like hell, but I advise anyone who is getting a pet put down to be with them through it, I am glad I stayed with her till the end, it reassured her and gave me knowledge that there was no pain or distress. I had held her in the palm of my hand on the day I collected her from her mum's house all those years prior, when I was 12 and she was my companion all through my formative years, it made a sort of sense to be the one holding her as she passed away.

Still makes me a bit sniffly thinking about it.

That's pretty sad. We buried our pets in the backyard.

My wife had her dogs cremated (I wanted them stuffed by a taxidermist).

My condolences to you folks. We're thinking about getting a new cat, but I'm not sure if I want a new one. How are you supposed to love the new pet
just as much as you loved the first one? Maybe it's like a mother loving all her kids the same?

Give it a few months, then get a new cat (or maybe two) from a rescue centre. Save some healthy cats from death row and you'll know you've done a pretty awesome thing and you'll soon learn to love them.

Because cats are amazing.

I'm pretty sure Petrie (My sister's guinea pig from an earlier post) has passed away by now. Last night, she was her bright a squeaking self, now when I check on her, she is just lying there, breathing heavily and kicking every so often. 'Tis a sad night for my sister.

Man, I know what you feel, I've had 3 Boxers in the time span of two years die. Two of the times when I wasn't near them.

The first was a freak accident due to a reaction of anesthesia whilst getting neutered. Almost 7 years old.

The second was a slow painful watch of one who had a slow leak of fluid from holes in his heart to where he had to be drained every week, and it got worse and worse until he would be filled back up by the time we got home from the drain vet visit. Was the hardest thing ever watching him leave my side for the last time to go be put down. He only made it to two.

I also went to visit my fathers and after a week got back early in the morning and was looking for one of my dogs while my mom was sleeping and was excited to see her after a week away. Only to have my mom tell me she died that day.

It's hard because I never want to leave in fear of having another one die(I have two left) and these guys I'm able to bond with more then anything else. They sleep in the same bed as me every night, and follow me loyally everywhere I go. And I'm a 21 year old male and hardly ever cry, but I'll admit that I have never cried so much. I cried less at Grandparents funerals.

It gets better with time though and you can't think about the death, you just got to think about how good of a life you gave them and how good of a life they helped give you and only smile about it.

I always fear the day the dog and friend of mine leaves. She is almost at the double digits, and I have never dealt with a loss of a pet.

Yeah, my cat had a giant tumor on her neck the size of a softball (I'm really not exaggerating at all. This was a small cat too) . They said they could remove it, but we decided against it. Too expensive

A couple months later, she died in her bed..So we put her in a shoe-box and buried her outside. Nothing special. It was sad for about three seconds, until I realized that she was like 15 years old anyway.

I dunno. It's hard to explain. At least she died rather non-violently.

Huh? So she's less than 10 years old? I don't think you should worry yet...

I had my 2 dogs for many years. They both had amazing personalities. Real part of the family. Holly was an old woman from the day she was born and died peacefully at home with all of us around her when she was about 15. Her sister Saffy died a few years later after a fight with cancer. Her legs gave out and she was in so much pain daily that the vet suggested she goes to sleep. It still gets me upset and that was 3 years ago or so. It was the most horrible feeling ever to go to the vet with her and not come home. I was a mess for days. I got an amazing thing when Saffy went and i'll paste it below.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It still makes me get all teary eyed

It's a crap day in my house, because we're taking our dog in to be put to sleep today. He's btween 13 and 18yrs old (got him from a shelter, they didn't know how old he was) and he's been part of our family for 8 years. We got him when we first got married, and he's older than both my kids.

But he's old. And he's had a wicked heart murmur for the past couple of years. Recently he's started having mini strokes, maybe once a month over the past couple of years. Over the past month, they've been near daily. And he bounces back a little bit less each time. This weekend was one of the worst, with him whining in pain.

So we're going to take him to the vet today to put him to sleep, so that he'll go peacefully in his mothers arms, and not suffering during a seizure, beause every vet has agreed it's only a matter of time.

It doubly sucks, beause I had to put our 4yr old dog down 4 months ago, because he had some sort of seizure, and couldn't walk, had a hard time breathing, and was just suffering, with no sign of improvement.

That one was hard because it was a surprise, this one is hard because we know it's coming.

I miss my dogs.

After my dog died, practically the next day I was looking for a new one and going to the local spca websites and stuff like that. I think I just wanted a companion no matter what. But I decided I should wait. 9 months later I adopted my new dog Ariel, at the time she was a 6 year old american eskimo who was used for breeding and dog shows. she was in a car accident and ever since has been afraid of loud noises and not as social with other dogs. I do think it was kinda mean of her old owner to get rid of her because she couldn't "perform" anymore so I consider it a rescue not an adoption.

anyway, I admit I don't feel as strong of a bond with ariel probably because I didn't have her since she was a puppy, however it's grown over time and stuff like that just gets better with age She's a super sweet dog, everyone loves her. She doesn't seem to like other dogs so much, but she loves people.. and not in an obnoxious lab-jumping-on-you kind of way

So yeah, if you lose a pet just give yourself some time and don't get a new one until you feel it's the right time. Definitely don't rush it and just get anything to fill the void.
