IIRC, the Necron codex refers to the Old Ones as being masters of astromancy and possessing cold-blooded wisdom. Which points to Slann without making it explicit.

Holy crap, you're right. How'd I miss that? Perhaps that representation is what a void whale looks like to those exodite eldar? As the Old Ones aren't Old Slaan, I guess that pic the best we got. But even then, it's still wildly interpretable. They could be Void Whales.

It is highly unlikely that the old ones devolved into void whales. Lets look at the necron codex to see if we cant solve this issue.

"The first to cross the sea of stars was a race of beings called the old ones"

Indicates they evolved on a planet or were confined to a star system for a time.

"The colonisation of these ultra-intelligent mystics had been immeasurable swifter than that of the necrontyr"

Doesnt tell us much other then they were faster at colonizing planets. It does tell us they were in fact a terrestrial race and not space born.

"Their (Necrontyr) superior technology was constantly outmanuvered by the old ones use of the webway"

In current fluff the webway capillaries vary in size from the size of a city to barely the size of a wave serpent. Argueably the old ones would know which ways to go. However if the old ones were the size of vold whales why make tunnels you couldnt get through?

"The last bastions of the old ones were besieged"

You could interprete the "last bastions" to be the bastions of the young races or you could interprete bastions to be the old ones colonized planets. Again this would mean that the old ones are still a terrestrial race.

"They nurtured many potential warrior races...."

Again this implies they took an active part in the evolution of the races and were not some distant bystander. The young races were at least aware of the prescence of the old ones, what they did and the fact that they created them.

"It is possible that some degenerate desendents of the old ones still live on backwater worlds"

Lastly this implies that the old ones that are still in existence still live on terrestrial worlds and are not devolved into void whales

Or maybe they grew the void whales to live in. Like a giant organic ship. They eat the mucus it secretes internally and float about the universe, hiding from the Ctan. I mean what better place is there to hide, than in plain site masqueraded as something else? Camoflauge is one of the oldest tricks in the books... and the old ones wrote the book right?

Lets see what race from a galaxy far far away is like that?

It would not make sense if they had biological ships. AS they built the Blackstone Fortresses!

There is a limit on how much awesome can be incorporated into a single project, otherwise everyone else will just give up and go home. Bioware's awesome abilities as game designers, and GW's mostly crap but stilll amazing ability to forge a univerese, yea sounds amazing. But in reality, it would probably end up as a two bit decent game with some serious lackings. Would a squad shooter like mass effect fit into the GW world? Of course! I have not been overly impressed with the previous attempts, the original DOW was pretty good, but the rest... meh.... I do think it is possible, but if perfection was acheived, then no one would care to make another game. I am not willing to sacrifice endless hours of future half hazard game play for one game that I will eventually tire of because of it's awesomenes... Ok, yes I am. I still play starcraft and diablo II lod, on occasion. Sorry for the thread hijack, hmmm void whales, Reapers?!

If I got banished after seeding life to the universe, I might come back hell bent on a little bit of destruction too... Maybe all their time in the outbits of the universe hiding from the c'tan on those backwater worlds that have been mentioned has twisted their once proud and dominant race into something new and atrocious. I love pointless discussions

Indicates they evolved on a planet or were confined to a star system for a time. You're taking it literally. Why were they the first to cross the stars? THEY WERE BORN IN THE STARS.

"The colonisation of these ultra-intelligent mystics had been immeasurable swifter than that of the necrontyr"

Doesnt tell us much other then they were faster at colonizing planets. It does tell us they were in fact a terrestrial race and not space born.Perhaps they colonized planets for mining, and instead of themselves living there, they had lesser races (those rabbit guys?) manage it for them.

They had their own webway system, that was much larger than the Eldar's.

"The last bastions of the old ones were besieged"

You could interprete the "last bastions" to be the bastions of the young races or you could interprete bastions to be the old ones colonized planets. Again this would mean that the old ones are still a terrestrial race.Or it could be those giant space cities I thought about...

Lastly this implies that the old ones that are still in existence still live on terrestrial worlds and are not devolved into void whalesWell, Void Whales themselves could be desendents. As for the backwater worlds....
hmmm...

Not at all. The Void Whales are cold-blooded (maybe) would be very wise, and be masters of Astromancy.

Thanks for the response. Perhaps you should add something that actually has a POINT when you post.
Now, just so this isn't "post count +1", here's another thought:
Imagine how the Necrontyr must've felt, standing on the bridge of their ship, talking to a race of being so utterly alien and so much more powerful than them. A race who could literally control the very warp itself. Talking to a being the size of your ship.

isnt that kind of why they enlisted the c'tan eventually enslaving themselves? but in the long run they did beat the crap out of the old ones

Does this make anyone else want to start the Void Whales space marine chapter?

The Void Whales chapter travels through space in a massive planetary fortress forged from the floating skeleton of a void whale discovered by their commander.

They quest across the universe in hopes of finding an actual live void whale so that they can verify that the beast which they venerate is truly as great as they believe.

While they focus mostly on interstellar warfare, they do maintain a small deployment of ground forces. Their marines' rebreathers are located on the back of the neck, just above the backpack, in honor of their namesake.

What color should void whales be? I feel like blue with khaki shoulderpads (whale bellies are kinda khaki, right?) would be most... literal. But I feel like it'd look too much like an Ultramarines successor chapter.

Though, I guess that could have been their origin. I dunno. Thoughts?
