Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

If I may suggest something....

It may be worth looking up the other stores in the...."area" since they have regularly scheduled tournaments that happen once a month on the same weekend every month. That way, instead of competing with another store on the same weekend for tournament players, everyone has the ability to cycle through.

For example, the tournament you held last weekend was on the same weekend as Little Wars in Baton Rouge. There were 20 players there. Since they have it the same weekend every month, why not pick the following or preceding weekend for the Slackerz Tournaments? That way folks can go to both instead of having to pick?

suggestion noted. however, as far as our tourney last weekend was planned late nov-early dec. only 4 showed up. we had promises from people who were going to show, and they didnt. the owner from slackerz had researched last year for our tourney last week observing the other stores for their tourneys and did not find any conflicts. after the owner found the best date, it was decided by the players when it was going to be. we did have a lot of players, and tons of tourneys last year. a lot of people moved out due to personal reasons. we have sent out inviations to bossier city, and lake charles. no response. but this invitation for the next tourney stills stands out for anyone in the area that is interested. by the way, the cat on the avatar looks pissed off.

I know this a bit of threadcromancy, but no one in The Shreveport area made mention of anyone from Leesville advertising a tournament. And to add to Dashofpepper's post, The Dragon'r Lair hold their 40K tournaments the 4th weekend of every month.

Heffling and I are going to see about coming down to Slackers next weekend (February 12th) to get in some friendly gaming - do you know if any 40k players will be around to roll some dice with?

And for your tournaments, I just wanted to throw a couple things out there?

1. Have you considered lowering the point value? There's a poll you should look up here on Dakka about the preferred tournament point level, and the two most popular point levels are 1500 and 2000. In the U.S., 1850 and 2000 are the two most common point levels, with 1500 fitting in here and there at smaller stores. Having a 2500 point limit for regular tournaments (with several of your players apparently feeling like even 2500 is light on points) is a *very* cliche group. The only time I break out to 2500 points is for 'Ard Boyz....and I have to take a different army than what I prefer playing because what I have doesn't really scale up or perform at 2500 points. That's just me personally. Since Ft. Polk and the soldiers there make up the bulk of the locality, pulling in new players and drawing folks from the base is critical to expanding the player base - something people need to be able to do without investing $1000+ to get into. With the current state of the store and the personnel transitioning through Ft. Polk and deployments, it might be a good idea to push for new players, smaller events to get them to participate and build that crowd up.

2. Prize support: I found it interesting that you guys have a much heftier buy-in for tournaments. I'm not complaining by ANY means - look at my signature. However, I've never seen a store take 20% of entry fees for hosting the tournament before. If the store was handing out the entry fees in cash minus 20%, that would be one thing.....but when you hand out store credit as prize support, when the store is charging full retail without discounts, they're making 60% profit on the tournament - and taking 20% more off the top of that in addition seems a bit heavy-handed. I think most people buy something when they go into a FLGS yeah? Couple hours there saw us pick up several sodas, couple cans of paint, and order a box of kans. I'm happy to support the stores I play in (and regularly do), and feel like most people do the same.

3. Meta-gaming: I had a chance to meet a bunch of the Slackers guys, and liked everyone. I found it interesting that several people told me the same stories....the most distinct being that tournaments struggle to succeed at the store because the same person or two wins (or used to win) them all, so people would call the store to see who had signed up, and if the folks who always won were going to be there, then the rest of everyone wouldn't show up. Maybe you guys shouldn't take sign-ups? Just show up the day of? Prevent people from trying to game whether they have a chance of winning? I think most people enter tournaments as a means of having fun and rolling dice all day, not strategically calculating whether their entry fee is a waste of money or not based on who is going to be in attendance.

4. *REALLY* need to elaborate on point 3 some more - Take this for what you will, but I pretty much win every tournament I go to, everywhere. I've just moved from somewhere where me brutalizing the locals led to significant resentment and repercussions. From the get-go, I'm concerned that if I come to a tournament and clean house, it will breed resentment based on what the folks in the store have told me about their other winners. I got to play undefeated "Granddaddy Ork" who boasted that he'd never lost a game before in the store....and he conceded at the end of turn two, with about 300 points (of 2k) left on the table, having killed a single unit of mine. I used to generalize my 40k in that people who lose to me have an opportunity to learn to improve their own game (which is how I feel about people who beat me....it challenges me to improve), and while a lot of 40k players are that way - I'm concerned about offending people at Slackers if I beat them, I don't want to be stressing about offending someone or hurting their pride when I game, I just want to have fun and roll dice.

5. Wanted to readdress schedule. I went to the Dragon's Lair for a tournament this past weekend and they had...12-16 people? They have a fixed tournament schedule. Two weekends before that, I went to Little Wars in Baton Rouge, and they had 20 people - they also have a fixed tournament schedule. Is it possible for Slackers to create a harmonious tournament schedule with the other stores in the area? Stores having comingling instead of competing schedules lets players from different stores meet each other and visit different stores. Want more players? Instead of having a tournament on the same weekend as Little Wars, have one the following weekend, and GO to the Little Wars tournament, introduce yourself, meet the players, and collect contact information and pass on dates and times for the Slackers tournament. When I lived in North Carolina, there were a series of 5 stores over a two hour distance both directions of where I lived (where there was no store) that I frequented for events. When I made a friend, I'd collect their cell phone number and e-mail address - so that when I was trying to help boost the tournament population for a store that was trying to pick it up, I could reach out and contact folks and see if they wanted to attend. Since Slackers doesn't really have a website or forums, you guys could really benefit by having whomever TOs events collect contact information, and pool it with the store, so that the store starts building a database of contact information for players - building an e-mail distro even so that you can shoot out information about tournaments.

6. Tournament rewards - Winner Take All is very awesome. I love it. I love it because I win most of the time. I would *love* to bet money on my 40k games - loser pays the winner $20 or something. When I play poker, I prefer winner take all as well - I want to win big or win nothing. This is great for competitive players....but to draw more players in, you have to appeal to the widest possible audience, which means giving out more prizes to more places. I feel like a lot of stores pay out too many places and reduce the value of winning, but I also see the benefit of paying out more places to attract more players. For example, the 20 players at Little Wars....they paid out 5 places. I took first and took $65. A little miffed that they paid out so many places....BUT....I'd rather be at a tournament with 20 players than one with 8 players any day, regardless of prize support. And if it takes paying out multiple places to get more people to come, then I'll swallow my competitive greed in favor of seeing more people show up at an event. I think you guys should mix and match them. There are some great winner-take-all events (like boss battles) and stuff that I'd be glad to host or show you guys how to run; I've done more than my share of running events and prefer to play than judge, but I'd be happy to help.

Anyway - that's my advice on building a player base to expand your tournament participation. Make the tournaments more attractive and able to be participated in by a greater variety of players.

Hey, new to the Leesville/Ft Polk, LA area and have been looking for gaming stores. I found Slackerz and Allstar Games listed in White Dwarf. I went to both addresses I could find for Allstar Games and both vacant and the number was disconnected. I went to Slackerz and it had tables and chairs and stuff in it but no staff or customers. I found a FEDEX truck idling in the parking lot and we both had no idea whether the store was still operational. He said he had tried to deliver packages there on several different days of the week and it had not been open any of them. Does anybody know what the hours are or if that gaming store is open? Is Baton Rouge the closest place to play around Leesville? I play IG 40K , Bretons in Fantasy and Russians in Flames of War. I would appreciate any help and am willing to join or start a club here at Ft Polk/Leesville. Will drive to Baton Rouge if necessary. Appreciate any feed back.

Hey bud, welcome!

Slackers is open...a couple days a week I think, but I'm not sure when. They *are* open on Saturdays at least, so I'd try a weekend.

I'm told that there is a small store in Alexandria with two tables, but I don't know the name of it.

Little Wars in Baton Rouge I've only been to once (I just moved here too) and the tournament I went to (last month) had 20 players - and it was a great event.

I'll also have tables in my house when the movers get us moved in on Saturday in Pineville), and I should definitely make your acquaintance. Heffling and I both live in Pineville. If you want to carpool with us sometime to Baton Rouge / Bossier City for a tournament, you're welcome to.

Are you a tournament player? Casual gamer? Whatcha looking for?

That's what I was thinking, trying this weekend to see if Slackerz was a weekend only joint. But if you guys are tracking a tournament at Little Wars any time soon I'm up for that. I've played a few tournaments at my store back home, but I need to get back into the rules for 40K, its been a while. I've been trying to learn the new Fantasy system. But I'm just looking to play a few games, 40K is great, I played 4500 pts this weekend; my brother on 4500 pts of Orks against 1500 Pts of each Space Wolves , Blood Angels , and my IG . It was fun. I'm in the same boat, I have to call the movers tomorrow to schedule a drop off of my furniture and household goods, but my new apartment looks like it will have room for gaming room so that's a plus. So if y'all are looking for some minature wargaming in Central Louisiana count me in.

Hey guys I live in Alexandria, and I've been looking for players since I moved back home. Been wanting to start an army, but have lacked the motivation because I really dont know anyone else that plays. I been reading from the Black Library since 98. I want to build an army, but biggest problem is I still don't know how to play. I've watched a few games but there's a huge difference between watching and doing. Unless you count forcing the gf to sit down and play Assault on Black Reach. I have the 40k rulebook and a couple Codex about the candidates for an army. Still only reading and not doing I know but ya gotta start somewhere.

I heard there was a small gaming store over by the zoo on Masonic Dr. So I went there and they don't play Warhammer or 40k there anymore.

Greetings! I live in Pineville, as does my Dakka buddy Heffling; we both play 40k.

We generally carpool and travel up to the Dragon's Lair in Bossier City and down to Baton Rouge to Little Wars once a month (each) for their monthly 40k tournament - they both have websites and forums. Its a bit far to drive to stop in and see if anyone is looking for a game though. On the flip side, I do have gaming tables in my house, and if you aren't a creep and have a neckbeard, you'd be welcome to come over and play 40k. If your casual status doesn't prevent you from participating in tournaments, you can carpool with us sometime to go.

Let me know!

hey everybody,

I am also new to ft polk and to DakkaDakka. I am deploying here in a week or so but only for a few months so it would be nice to find a community for when I get back. In case you didnt get it from my name, I play tau but I only have a small army right now. I used to play dark angles but I sold my army (my first which was painted horribly) a few years back. Like many of you I also drove to slackers and allstar before becoming disheartened.

If anyone plays around the area and wouldnt mind being patient with me as I build my army please let me know.

Hello all! I just recently moved back home to Leesville/Ft Polk area (coming from Ft Bragg, NC). It is sad to know Slackerz is now closed indef. Now I already sent PMs and Emails to few individuals above, but anyone that lives my local area, I hope we can have a gathering that plays 40K. I am currently looking for a home, but once I do, I will have a dedicated game room (hopefully - I did in my last house in NC). I have a huge 3-D game terrain board requiring no addition terrain added (but can still be added) for play with Warhammer 40K. I hope to meet people to hang out, play 40K and among other hobbies and interests. I have many. Hope to hear from you all!

I'm going to make a new thread about it because this one is pretty much old and dead.

I'm also at Ft Polk, just returning from deployment. The player base in our 40k group has shrunk by about 50% since I was last here. Slackerz is closed and now we can catch an occasional game at Ken's house.

Most of my weekends are tied up so an occasional weeknight game, once every two, three weeks is enough 40k for me. If anybody around here has a group going, drop a line and we'll get contact info for players and groups of players spread around Polk that don't know about each other.

I'll go ahead an post my email address, but replying here, just as good.

Unfortunately, Slackerz IS gone for good. The owner's dick of a (now-ex) husband used crappy Louisiana laws to sink the shop just to spite her. It's a shame really, it was a great place with an excellent community...

For CenLA players, though, I'm over in Anacoco (just a few minutes' drive from Leesville/half an hour from Ft. polk) if y'all are up for a game. I knew most of the Slackerz crew, so if any of your guys are still trolling around, gimmie a shout (this is William, btw!).

Ghost, hit me up sometime; my buddy Cody and I would be more than happy to teach you. I play Chaos (and will get back into Tau when they get their next codex), Cody does Space Wolves and Tyranids (And is well-versed in almost every 40k army, evne some fantasy ones).
