Maybe even a board game.
Think about it this way- you like playing with toy soldiers, she probably sees dolls. Try to force your game and it wont be fun.
D&D has scope to play as a fairy. Plus it can be really fun if you have a good group of people

Awesome idea. You could convert troll models to function as carnifex. As with most good conversion ideas....this one has limitless possibility.

use eldar- they were originally called "space elves" (squats were "space dwarfs"- it's just eldar's fluff expanded and it turned out to be a great idea. squats, however, did not. They got the sack).
anyway, eldar seem the best choice IMHO. I'm amazed no-one's mentioned them so far

if she likes Fairies, go for WHFB Wood Elves. If she wants to play 40K with fairies, Blood Angels or an Eldar variant count-as.

Probably eldar for 40k and wood elves are a sure win for fantasy if you want fairies. Chaos demons probably wouldn't work with her (but you never know) and blood angels don't really have much more than a unit with wings.

I remember that game from around 1999-200ish. I always thought it was pretty cool. I mean come on, blood thirsty cannibalistic fairies...how can that not be cool?
I do believe there was a fairly limited minis range for it as well.

Ok, I can't quote for all my responses so I'll just quote this one and work it out in the answers.
I've seen girlfriends just try and get involved, and this isn't it. She's pretty nerdy on her own, and just has had no experience with 40k. She's got the brain to really get into 40k. Now, she's interested in playing some pickup games, and asked about some of my conversion work (I'd say I'm maybe a 6-7 on a good day). Now, in no way is this girl a fan of grimdark; and honestly I'm not either. I've got chaos, orks and sisters and sometimes the fluff just gets to me. If she had nothing to do with the fluff, and just played the game I'd be a happy camper. So the lady wants fairy's, nice fairies. I plan on doing my best to oblige, 'cause that's what good guys do. I've seen everything on this forum from McDonalds Orks to Doom based nids... I figure this shouldn't be too far off base right?
I'm liking the idea of a nids based list, with gargoyles. Maybe BA as well. I suppose I could just do up a bunch and change the "counts-as" every few games 'til she likes it. I've done a little looking and maybe a kit bash with demonettes and a fantasy kit might do most of the work for me. This is good conversation though, lets keep going. Based on a BA or nids list, what kind of list would you build and what archetype would you use to represent the different units?

*tries to imagine Tinkerbell as a broodlord*
Hmm, If i remember, a jabberwocky is a type of fairy dragon. I could be wrong and I don't feel like looking up the specifics. BUT if she does go with a nids list she could use a faydragon for a trygon/prime/Mawlock.
You also have to remember one thing(not sure if its still the same in 5ed nid dex)
the entire brood HAS to look the same, with the exeption of so biomorphs/bioweapons.
Atleast thats how it was in the 4ed book.

Im telling ya! Tyranids would be a perfect fey creature codex. They are fast, have some awesome "magical powers" they can suck the life force from others! Gargoyles are just really ugly fairies anyways, and Im sure you could think of something to count as a winged tyrant to run around with them. Cmon, just think on it, you know its a great idea.
Using a Blood Angles codex just seems like a dirty cop out

Eldar - Give your swooping hawks butterfly wings, paint up the vehicles in similar fashion.
Demons - Tzeentch and slanesh, TONS of room for conversion, get some old style deamonettes (the bare breasted ones were a much better sculpt, would be worlds easier to make them appear fairy like) Fate Weaver with fairy wings, screamers, etc.
oooo... flamers of tzeentch could be flowers. Sculpt them up to be cutesy, souldnt take much green stuff using the flamer model as a base.
Or introduce her to fantasy and get wood elves.
I'm not a fan of the blood angels as a fairy army idea, space marines are brutish and boxy, im pretty sure thats not what she would be looking for with fairies...

Nah, its honestly just another name for a dragon. Its from a poem in which a prince slices off the head of the jabberwocky with his "vorpal blade"...hence the old D&D item.

the jabberwocky is the poem by lewis carol, its actually part of through the looking glass, its available on wikipedia i believe.
all later 'folklore' for the jabberwock is the produce of D&D and other modern fantasy stuff, it is quite interesting looking at actual folklore and their modern descriptions (just look at vampires, it was the film nosferatu that made vampires burn in sunlight).
