Ailaros wrote:Some of the vehicle bitz are places a little strangely (like the searchlights), but their painted so well that it took me awhile to even notice, due to being in awe over how really nice the models look.

I totally know what you mean. Most of the stowage would bounce and roll off the tanks the moment they started moving, and the searchlights make no sense at all. However, to the former, rule of cool! To the latter, the Chimera and Hydra bodies were built as Chimeras initially, and in the old Codex Searchlights were not standard equipment. As I always purchased them in my armies (for 1 point, they were a steal), I had to represent them some how on the tanks for WYSIWYG purposes. The looked atrocious on the turret, and would be too fragile (the heavy stubbers on the Chimeras already keep snapping off). Hence why they are placed where they are placed.

CT GAMER wrote:I'm not sold on the tank tread reconfigurations, but that is a minor thing overall...

What about the treads specifically bother you? I know they already don't work. I wasn't really thinking about "function" when I built the treads, only that they looked cool, and it was only pointed out to me afterwards that the tanks would throw the treads everytime.

1hadhq wrote:The Background sheet was specifically made for them?
Fits well with the scheme but I thougth using such to take pics of your Models wouldn't show details and give you a camo effect.
Maybe a hint how to create pics on something that isn't white and still don't merge model and background?

The background sheets are used to accentuate the colors of the model, but are "neutral" enough that when photographing, don't dominate the model. I have a variety of patterns, tones and colors I can mix and match depending on the models I'm photographing (although this particular purple background is well used because I tend to use it almost exclusively).

They also have the added effect of helping the camera focus better, and for whatever reason creates a better "reflective" surface upon which the camera can take in light well enough that minimal editting is required in Photoshop before uploading.

Absolutely amazing! Is this army built for play or show? If so, how well has it done? Also would you be able to ball-park the sum of money required to create such beauty. Many thanks for your amazing contributions!

Hey DV8,

Followed your space wolf blog on bolter&chainsword and really loved your work, thanks for all the helpful content as well.

Your death korps are looking great! Makes me really want to invest in an airbrush... how much did yours cost you? (including the filter.)

Thanks. The army is for play, but I kept show in mind. I've only recently begun playing with it, haven't gotten enough games in to really gauge how well the army is doing (I've only used it a few times, against less than mediocre players...lousy local pick up games).

Ballpark retail for what you see there, $1200 before tax, and that's not including the collection of stowage, and using the current conversion of GBP to Canadian Dollars (roughly 1.6...it was closer to 2.0 or 2.2 when I first bought the army, which would up the cost closer to $1400).

If you're also referring to the cost of actually painting it too? Pheeew...I don't even know...

The airbrush + compressor was a cheapo combo I bought off eBay for $100. The airbrush is a basic dual-action internal mix airbrush, and the compressor has an air filter, with an auto-on/off feature (it will remain on until it hits optimal PSI, and then autoshuts off, turning on only if the PSI drops below optimal levels).

I LOVE it !!! Death Korps are my favorite IG models. I was planing on starting an IG army in the future, This makes me want it even more. Great work on the models. I love the pilot details on all the Valkyries. That adds a nice touch to the models.

The infantry and gunships were really good and the tanks were downright amazing.

Holy crap, do I love DKoK armies. I love the look of the models, generally, but I don't know if I've ever seen an entire army that wasn't done well. Perhaps the amount of time, effort, and money required acts as filter, leaving only the worthiest hobbyists to attempt it...

Like I said, I love DKoK and you've done them justice, then took them out to a nice dinner, just because you could. Everything looks great. Fantastic job!

Actually, it's very rare I see full Forgeworld armies that look great. I've seen far too many Death Korps armies that just made me wonder why they would spend that much money, only to paint them that poorly. But that's just my opinion.

Much appreciated. That is a very beautiful army. So many flying ships. How do they run in a game, having so many of them?

Alas, I typically play on a 4' by 4' table, so deploying them straight up tends to fill up my side of the board rather quickly (and it paints a big shoot-me target on my army). So I typically Outflank them. An Astropath combined with Ursarker Creed (to Outflank the Demolisher, while the rest of the army stays in reserve) tends to see the bulk (typically all but the stupid Demolisher) of my army arrive turn 2, allowing me a devastating Alpha Strike (and keeping my deployment light).

Oh absolutely I game with this army. There's no sense in my mind to build an entire army simply for "show".

Hey DV8,

Great looking army, I'm working on a Death Korps platoon to add to my Cadian army. Any tips on melta gunners? It looks like you used the Elysian meltas, but how easy was it to swap them in place of the lasguns?

The pin-up girls on the Valkyrie's are freehand. No stencils. Likewise with the numbers. I have modified/tweaked the bases on the army so I will be rephotographing the army soon. I'll see about getting better pictures (and close ups) of the Valkyries and Vendettas when I do.

I may also be painting squad numbers on all the infantry, depending on how much time I have and how bored I get...
