Nice Hierodule, mine's still WIP while I figure out how to make the carapace pop more.

One question- is one of the talons broken on yours? I know the kit comes with 1 short talon (that you stick into a slot on the base), but it looks like the end is missing on another of yours? Wouldn't surprise me, the first Hierodule I got had to be returned because of huge chips on the main body part.

Awesome model and really well painted, I just wish it didn't die so quickly in Apoc games. No Inv save hurts it bad against heavy weapon batteries :( Very nasty if it gets into a squad though, and the acid spray is hilarious against MEQ.

Hello, more again! It must look like I'm really productive, but in reality i'm job-hunting so have a lot of free time!!

@ Scrazza: Thankyou! "Minis" have a habit of doing that, can be tedious on occasion though.

@ Bunnygurl: Thankyou! I got the vegetation idea from Sirath's white Tau here on Dakka, great idea imo. The pose is very aggressive, definitely about to smash apart a super-heavy!

@ Neith: Maybe you could put a pic up in the P+M section? Folks on Dakka are awfully helpful!
Uhh, yeah! I managed to drop it while i was priming it so the "guard" carapace bit in front of the acid-spray, the right talon and the top left arm all broke!! Luckily i managed to glue the arm back together but the carapce and talon bits were lost!! It's just been under heavy fire thats all!
Thankyou very much, I love the model too but the paintjob is only simple, you're too kind (All hail Devlan Mud!!) I suppose its a big target, thats why you need a brabed hierodule, a harridan and a heirophant as well!! [i dont have them............yet!] Acid spray is awesome, but i have a Plague Reaper so i know the joy of hellstrm templates!!

I finished the 6 Saurus i did when i was in Portugal. They are know based properly and have shields Pics:

These pictures show the true colour better. I tried to go for a jungle theme with my Nids, hope it came out ok?? Funnily enough this is the first Tyranid model i have finished and based properly. Oh the shame!!

Thanks for looking,

I think it looks awesome! very fitting base. Only minor thing I don't like... is the tree to his left in this picture... Is this by chance one of those GW trees? Just think that looks a bit out of place when rest of base is prefect. Loving your stuff sir, keep it up!

im liking them. must agree with that tree though, I would rather see some tall grass or something which will still put something there but won't be so...off i guess.

Excuse me! How dare you criticise my model!!!

If you couldn't tell, i was joking.

It is indeed a GW tree [so are the jungle plants btw], i have hundreds of the buggers, don't mind 'em meself. I tried to incorporate all of the basing materials i have onto the base,. so it would tie all the other nids together so to speak. All of my larger nids (Warrior sized +) have the trees as well as plants like this:

And this (Damn, i still need to do something about those thumbs!! ):

Anyway, I appreciate the comments, i always love to hear other people's opinions. In this case however, the trees are staying!

Thankyou as always,

I know, I know.. I don't think you've said anything negative about my work... Feeling really bad now..

Its nothing personal, just always had this dislike... ok.. HATRED for those GW trees. Liking the rest of the base and think he looks really good on it.

Oh, and found these: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/222948.page and http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32468 might be of some use?

Lol, if your minis weren't so awesome i'm sure i would find something to criticise. Please stop painting so well so i can have something negative to say.......

They're not the best trees but they add a bit more height to the bases and............. they were free!!

Those jungle threads are good, thanks! If the aquarium plants weren't £15 each in the pet stores round here i would get a few more varieties. Pretty expensive on the web as well :(

I need to get round to doing some Jungle scenery, would have double use for the Nids and the Lizardmen.....someday.......

Meanwhile, my colour shapers came today, so i can finally start finishing my flyrant. Heres how he is now:

Thanks for looking,

I don't have access to a decent camera currently, so any pictures I do take turn out awful Best shot is this http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/92840-Scythed%20Hierodule%20WIP.html
That's an old image from when it was much more of a WIP, I've since pretty much finished detailing the dead Marine on the base, highlighted the blue and purple parts as best I can (blue with a very light drybrush, purple with edge highlights). Unfortunately this was one of the first models I've felt I needed to highlight, so they look pretty amateurish

I think the problem I had is that I'm not really sure how people blend to make really smooth highlights, so it looks too un-natural at the moment. I've been working on mine for months now, I just do a little every so often and I figure it'll be done at some point Maybe it's just the colourscheme is hard to work with, more natural schemes seem to work better.

I tend to blend in about 3-5 layers. i start with an intermediate colour, then shade, then highlight 2 or 3 times. Eg. for purple.

- Start with a liche purple basecoat
- Either wash with leviathan purple, or paint in the shadows ith 50:50 liche purple:chaos black
- Retouch Liche purple if needed
- Highlight with 75:25 liche purple:kommando khaki
- Highlight with 50:50 liche purple:kommando khaki

You can wash with a thinned leviathan purple to smooth the layers but its not normally necessary

On your Hierodule i would give the carapace a purple wash and the skin a blue wash. Then sort of 'streak' the purple on close to the edge of the carapace, i would also say paint the recesses black and purple mix (look at mine to see an example). For the skin just mix the basecoat blue with a lighter blue or kommando khaki and layer it on, avoiding the recesses and showing a bit of the original basecoat. That should be enough imo to make it 'pop' more!

Hope that helps, sorry for being long winded!!

Hello all, back again! (Really surprising myself that Im doing something every day!! Far more productive than usual)

First up is the Lash Whip and Bonesword for the Flyrant. The whip itself is a paperclip covered in GS, stealer scytal on the end, attatched to an MC deathspitter arm. The bonesword is a fex crushing claw, minus the big claw, with a plasticard sword. I really like the way the fore-arm is so thick, makes it look like a bio-engieered sword guard or something.

Next is the 18 man multi-base i did for the skeleons. I finally got my mantic order so am now 60 skeletons better off! Mantic skeletons on a GW fallen giant template, the skellies have some head (not partial to the mantic "silly grin" heads), shield and weapon swaps for GW skellies. The reason for this base is because me and my regular opponent spent about a month playtesting various rule tweaks so he could field a 12 giant Chaos list at 3k, he has done some sweet conversions and greenstuffery [i'll try nd take some pics next time i face off against them]. I figured it would be a fun dig at him to have my skellie unit beating on a giant. I will paint it like his

Thats all for now, tomorrow (well today i spose! ) i should be playing either 40k or fantasy so i'll endeavour to do a batrep wih pics and put a linky here,

Cheers,

The cold reaches of space

Ok.. wow... haven't been on Dakka since before the holidays... (not if there was alcohol and horror-survival video game to beat with the older bro)

First off, did you sculpt that flyrant body? If so, kudos. I could use some tips- what kind of putty, tools... rubber or metal tipped? Excellent sculpt. You have a solid base for painting, but if that IS a sculpt, that toy is something else. A bit of smoothing for the chest (doesn't look "there" yet... close) and painted, I'd have a hard time telling it apart from the real thing. Kudos, brother.

Next, the skeletons. SICK. Not sure if you plan to play with them, but for that far-future VC army (or Tomb Kings?), I want a scenic-almost-to-the-point-of-diorama base for some fo the bulk units to spice up my army.

Finally, bone-sword looks great. No comment on that.

The whip, I like the uneven organic look personally- looks like a vine. IF by chance you wanted a smooth even-look, try a length of wire and cover it with GS- doesn't take too much to make a good amount for wrapping. Cover your hands in whatever lube-stuff you use (and that just sounds really wrong, sorry... ) and work it over by putting the wire/GS between your palms, and moving your palms back and forth fast, changing areas to make it "even"... rubbing it like you're trying to start a fire with a stick the old fashion way... When it's smooth, use one of the "open" non-GS covered ends and stick it into a cork or something to help let it harden. At the end of the life of the GS, right before it hardens (15-20 mins in?) use smooth tools to bend it into shape. After, add more GS to one side to make a tip for it. Again, I dig the organic look, personally. Juuus in case...

Good stuff, again. Look forward to more!

@ wolfshadow: Thankyou, i prefer the jaggedy organic look to GWs rectangle tbh!

@ HF Izanagi: Hey, thanks for the long reply, i always love to hear feedback! Right, how to reply to this beast...

1 - The torso sides were press moulds of the tyrant, was just experimenting, came out well though. The rest is my work, just don't tell GW or they'll come and sue me..... It's still fairly WIP, got to do GS work to it yet. (Sorry if i misled you into thinking i sculpted it all, im not that good...............yet, getting there though! )
The yellow stuff is Milliput (yellow-grey), it mixes like GS but can be smoothed using water like clay. I use my fingers and/or a regular sculpting tool, it dries rock hard in about 6 hours or something. Good thing is it then takes very well to sanding/ carving/ cutting. For GS work i use colour shapers, bought some the other day and they are fantastic!! Definitely should be top of the list if you work with GS fairly often.

2 - Thankyou! I wil beplaying with them yes, but i plan to only use them when they're painted so far-future could be right!! Yeah, multi-bases are pretty awesome, especially in large units, they can get monotonous to the eye fairly quickly.

3 - Thanks!

4 - lube-stuff...... Thats a good tip, thankyou very much! I usually do the frame into the shape first, then try and shove the GS on it! Your way makes much more sense! Forthe nids its ok, but definitely a must-do for other stuff, cheers!

I should have more soon,

Keep up the work. You're really good at what you do.

Hehe thanks!

I did definitely consider it but what with my limited electric skills and lack of space on the base it probably wont happen.
I might have a look around an electric shop (if such a thing exists! lol) for a smal buzzer or some such. Hmmm. Give it a bit and perhaps!
