I believe we can see there from Russia. Or something.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I'm really not that bothered. We got the Olympics and I'm not sure we could afford another International Sporting event in the same decade when we've got more important things to spend money on like multi-billion pound floating missile platforms that never do anything.

The corruption side of it is irritating, but I'm fast losing interest in football anyway for all manner of reasons that are well documented and frequently discussed.

Mn, maybe, but I doubt it'll be that simple.

Even still, this isn't a country I would want to visit. Any country where I would be a second class citizen simply because of my gender-- IE, any country that uses Shari'a law-- is on the bottom of my list of places I'd visit. I'd rather visit the slums of Brazil with all their gang wars going on than a Muslim country run by Shari'a laws.

I think my chances of quality quality biscuts, gravy, sausage, and bacon, would be less in Qatar. Did I mention its really hot there?

Not to mention that it's surrounded by some of the West's favourite countries. Security problems a go go!

Although we may have settled our 'dispute' with the extreme Islamic fundamentalists by then...

I'm not debating that women are treated poorly in some arabic countrys, but this should have little to do with Islam and Sharia Law. The Prophet Muhammed's first wife was a very successful business woman who supported him until her death. The poor treatment of women is more to do with the arab population as a whole and their system of values only some of which are based on Islam proper.

Think Russia and Qatar have scruples about that type of thing? The FIFA execs would be getting gobbled before they got off the runway!

USA/UK wont host jack because they have scruples about hiring prostitutes to fellate foreign officials.

I have lost more and more interest in sports the older i get, i think im ready to give up altogether now. Its just flagwaving, idiotic Patritiosm and corruption starting at the top. Followed by endless advertising, overpaid nancy boys and whinging.

Im giving up on sports and devoting more time to drinking non advertised micro brews from small real ale distilleries.

Well.. unless Stella is a pound a pint...

So.....how does one become a FIFA exec?

In the end though, I think FIFA looks to countries where they can grow the game, instead of places where the market is pretty much peaked. And then there's TV rights as well, you want it going into Europe live at a decent time. The rest is down to hookers and blow.

Seriously, we spent $45 million, including a really embaressing advert thing, that would have been cringe worthy in the 80s. And we don't even like soccer.

They won't grow the game in Qatar, the population is only 1.7 million. I suppose they can look beyond that to the rest of the Arab world as well.

The thing is, football is already a pretty massive sport nearly everywhere except the USA.

You would think that American is the last big target for FIFA to bag.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I don't care about football, but hosting the World Cup brings a lot with it thats beneficial to the host country.

The UK bid was superior to its rivals, and while Qatar no doubt has the cash to build world class facilities its no stretch of the imagination to suggest the USA could compete with that.

I can't say what happened with the yanks, the fact they hosted in the 90's could rightfully have a lot to do with denying their options. However its common knowledge that the BBC scuppered our chances. Yes we know FIFA are corrupt, but wouldn't it be wise for a national television service to hold off on an expose until after bidding was concluded. Dumb fethers. Putin made comments earlier this week about 'smear campaigns' in the UK press, in relation to this. He knew what to play.

The news that England has bid bid out in the first round was broken to the BBC in particular five minutes live on TV before the results were announced. It was also mentioned that the England presentation was particualrly impressive, which is wa way of saying, it could have been your but next time play it by our rules.

Russian commentators have also suggested that they heard the ill timed Panorama program scuppered the bid.

While doesn't take place here in Spain...... anyway, why to bother about, i don't understand all this arguing for having the world cup in Quatar, especially in UK and US cases where Football (soccer for the US iirc) didn't have the importance than other countries (especially when i refer to US, UK has also a good account on football), what do you want? that sort of madness that seem to mesmerize the population when some sort of this event came??? believe me, if you don't like it, or just a bit you'll have soccer for lunch to dinner, fething annoying, believe me, you've avoided an annoying event

Shoulda coulda woulda don'ta matta wortha damn.

Shari'a laws are VERY frequently used to abuse and oppress women. While this might not be the intent of the laws, it is their end effect. Similarly, they're used to oppress homosexuals, non-muslims, and so on.

Why would we want Soccer anyway? I don't get the point of watching a sport that scores maybe 2 points on a side for an entire game and often ends in a tie, and includes a bunch of grown men crying like babies over fake injuries to try to get free kicks. Really, if the players didn't do the crybaby fake injury thing I could put up with the lack of actual scoring happening, but the injury thing is just too embarassing for me to want to get near a game.

Flashman wrote:I'm not debating that women are treated poorly in some arabic countrys, but this should have little to do with Islam and Sharia Law.

So you're saying that you think women should be treated poorly, just that it shouldn't be for that specific reason? I don't see how your statement makes sense otherwise - in the real world Sharia Law = women treated badly (along with gays, and Christians, and Jews, and...) , in an ideal world no one would be treated badly regardless of gender.

Well you're in luck! As the World Cup is in Brazil in 2014. plus think of all of those world class stadiums they're going to have in Qatar to stone their women in.

I may be clutching at straws here but is there any chance David Beckham was the one that counted our votes?

Although, I really couldn't care less where the World Cup is held.

This.

I don't care where they host it, I'll be watching from a bar or at home anyway.

Too bad the Iberian bid didn't win, though. We could've actually made some money from the 3 stadiums we put into the bargain (nevermind about the other 8 or so we renewed (ie, spent a lot of friggin' money which didn't get it's return - for the Euro 2004. Well, Braga's stadium is nice, at least).
