The significant problem with the Wave Serpent though is its cost.
Its a great vehicle, but its not cheap for widespread use...

Ork trukks are awesome, they deliver the orks fairly well to the battlefield with cheap cost. On the minus side they are easy kill points for enemy (altough they are just made of four-leaved-clovers or something, they cant be destroyed )
Chaos rhinos with possession are great and durable, altough bit pricey. But my vote goes for wave serpents, they deliver the squad behind enemy lines well, and are pretty much indestructible sometimes hehe.

I think every transport has it's advantages and disadvantages. How do you weigh cost vs transport capacity vs survivability vs speed vs etc? It's impossible to say what is objectively "the best".

You are exactly correct, however that is why we are judging/deciding subjectively with a little bit of objectivity added into the mix...

Sure. That said, there is a certain bag of things out there by which we can judge. For example, a transport which ignores terrain is better than a transport that doesn't.

In the end, I'd say the best way to judge a transport as better is the one whose combination of things allows it to safely and quickly bring its cargo to where they need to be, with perhaps a counterweight of price.

This means drop pods and skimmers are automatically better than treaded transports, for example. This means things like Raiders and Wave serpents are good, while the rhino probably at the bottom, as the ONLY thing it has in its favor is price, while it's worse at absolutely everything else.

Yeah. I wasn't intending to say "This thread is dumb, stop talking". I was just attempting to put some larger context to the discussion, pointing out that people should say more than just "this is the best".

Perhaps I failed in that attempt...

Best transport non-dedicated is the vendetta - alpha strike fast medium armor and accurate multiple high-strength weapon.

Best transport for cost - rhino 35 pts of survivability and a 2-man firepoint.

Best transport for survivability - devilfish awesome medium armor, okay weapons, cheap 4+ cover save. Too bad it just can carry trained cows-- ah I mean Tau.

Best assault transport - Landraider (latest 3 SM codexes only) Armor and the capacity to dump out a full squad that can assault and have good weapons to boot.

Best overall - Give me a wave serpent - fast, survivable, one good weapon systems and the codex gives me a lot of good choices to carry that serve a purpose.

Pre-5th ed - Give me a falcon with a holofield - nigh unkillable and well armed again able to carry an array of good troops inside. <sigh> It feels like a falcon is looking at a 1963 Cadillac Eldorado - big luxurious but it costs like it is a premier vehicle but no one wants 6 mpg nowdays.

can you still assault out of the assault ramp the turn that thing deepstrikes in?

I personally would have to say the the Blood Angel Rhino for being fairly economical while delivering the squad its carrying at a timely pace. It also still has the 2 fire points if you find yourself not utilizing the extra speed for a turn.
As a note if it is taken for an assault marine squad it is also gotten at a 35 point discount. The squad may be slightly more points heavy but overall I find it to be a net savings for the package over other options.

3+? Isn't it a 4+ cover (re-rollable if you use Fortune)?

The Serpent is the coolest transport ever

It's only 4+, jetbikes get 3+.

In terms of which transport is best, I would say wave serpent, purely because of survivability. Their job is to transport, everything else is a bonus. It WILL deliver its cargo unless you are very unlucky or you opponent is very lucky. The only negative is the points cost.

Unless my opponent uses deepstrike, no Land Raider has EVER reached my lines in tact. They are just too slow.

I either take them down with FP combo, or burn them down with my FireDragons that were delivered with a more reliable transport

Then they are doing it wrong. Its a feth landraider. Its 250+ points. They should be covering it. And you can always deepstrike a redeemer for MAXIMUM LULZ!

I'm a firm believer in the humble chimera. Sure its not fast and its guns are lackluster but it protects your guardsmen, has 5 fire points and its cheap.

A nice mobile bunker. I never leave home without at least two.

I'd probably rate them like this, but only given my limited experience:

Toughest: Monolith (sorta a transport), Blessed Hull Land Raiders (ignore lance), Land Raiders
Best Gunship: Vendetta, Wave Serpent, Stormraven (only on the list for its good weapon loadout; it's too expensive cause of its other goodies)
Best Light Transport: Raider, Rhino/Chimera

It's not quite that easy to a Land Raider. But the big difference is that the land raider draws heavy weapons fire, which is good. If you don't have a realiable kill mechanism for them they are just too much for alot of armies to handle.

The best one is the Serpent, its a fast skimmer with energy field making it very resilient.
But its a bit overpriced.
