I saw it, and I loved it.
If you are a fan of the first movie, Disney did everything in their power to make sure you are happy. You mine as well be watching the original Tron as faithful as Legacy is.
You go in the theater looking for a Tron movie, you got a Tron movie, 100%.
I give it a 9 out of 10 easy. Can't wait to buy the movie when it comes out.

The soundtrack really made it for me. I was a medium size Daft Punk fan before, but after listening to the soundtrack a good 3 full weeks before seeing the film, it was fething rad when the Grid part hit. It only got better from there.
Oh yeah, and it had Olivia Wilde, with a pixie haircut. Damn fine.

The soundtrack sets it apart from other movies even more than its aesthetic quality (which is already pretty unique). The first thing I did after I got back form the theatre was get the OST.
My last, and possibly best purchase, of 2010.

I liked it. Like the first one, the soundtrack was amassing and it was a fun night at the movies with friends.
Also, on movie reviews, I use MovieBob on the escapist website. I find that he goes into the right amount of detail with the reveiw, and tries to always bring up the good points as well as the bad.
Its fun, so go see it.

With movie reviews I find you have to actually read what the reviewers say and not skip
to the thumbs up/thumbs down/star ratings.
I guess I'm not one who just wants to watch visual candy. For me, story adds to or
detracts from the special effects. Good special effects with horrible plot turns
and/or loads of informational dump/exposition hubs ruin things for me.
Random pieces, like the discovery of the isos without any meaningful purpose to
the plot outside of introducing an important character, were on the level of midichlorians.
I don't know. I'll get over it. Forgetting the movie as we speak.

I think looking for a story in cinema is fine. But coming to Tron and expecting more than "visual eye candy" seems a bit silly.
Tron lives and dies by how it looks and sounds (which was great) not by the story.
I mean it's just computer mumbo-jumbo to give the movie a theme. You have programs having motorcycle fights, what did you expect?

Want to know whats sad? There was a game that bridge the first and second movies together. It completely explained the Isos. Whats sad is the movie expected you to have already seen that.

I don't think it really matters in the end. I didn't watch Tron so I could better understand the human condition in relation to technology. I came for the light cycles and funky music. It seems unfair to Tron to criticize its story when that is not its main attraction.

Anyway, you're making an excellent desicion. The movie itself is quite entertaining soundtrack aside. I don't want it to sound like that's the only reason to see it

Short of the amazing soundtrack (Oscar worthy even? With Black Swan not in the running since it reuses a lot of Tchaikovsky, there's not much competition that REALLY stands out against it), it's not too far above standard action movie fair. Although it does still retain the unique premise that the original film had, the novelty isn't quite as entertaining as its progeniter.
Basically, boy loses dad, boy finds dad, boy trades dad in for an Olivia Wilde. Good trade, but you see it coming from the very beginning. Once again, standard action movie fair.
Still, the acting was good. Most notably, I kept getting "The Dude" vibes from Jeff Bridges throughout the entire movie. Especially when he talked about his son ruining his whole 'zen' thing. I actually burst out laughing. Of course, that's probably just because of how awesome "The Big Lebowski" was, and how iconic Bridges was in it. And I'm also glad that Bridges got as much screen time as he did.
Basically, it's the forgettable action flick that you go in with that friend who likes forgettable action flicks. So long as you don't expect Ghost in the Shell, it's okay.

Don't watch it in 3D. They didn't abuse the gimmick enough, only to have it shoved down your throat in a moment that didn't require it.

I saw it last weekend. I would say that if you have inclination to see it at all, do it while it's showing in 3D and on IMAX. Gets the most out of the visual effects.
Also, I agree with asimo that the soundtrack is pretty sick.

Then my problem was: there wasn't enough TRON coolness.
Drop the pretense of a story and more disc duels, more cycle races, more planes.
Introducing Zeus the way they did (dumb), the character turn near the end
(inexplicable), kid does nothing user-worthy.

Just got back from watching it in 3D. It was OK. I read someone thought the music was Oscar worthy!
There wasn't much wonder. The lad is in there for the first time and he's thrust straight in. The thing with the new films is that the set pieces are too fast, too much action , not enought time to slow it down to take it in. Same with Transformers, too much too fast. There's no enough time to apreciate the effort.
The lightcycles could have been used more, agree with the disc fights too. First day there, his first day and he's killing feared warriors in the ring and then kills several guards in the big bus jobbie thing at the end. How? have the guards been trained by a wet fish? These guys have Jedi poles and all that jazz and get's beat buy a lad who has just arrived that day!! lame!
I liked it but thought it missed out on a lot of stuff just so they could add more visuals (and the "story" with Zeus was crap) instead of content.

The music is very fitting and even out of the context of the movie, generally worth listening to.
I'd pick Black Swan's soundtrack over Tron's any day, but Black Swan isn't eligable for an oscar for best soundtrack.

The music was OK. Sometimes it didn't set the mood and was shoehorned in just to allow Daft Punk to have a role.
I felt that overall there were a few shoehorn moments which padded it out unecessarily.
Still, I learned that there's a Yogi Bear movie in 3D and The Green Hornet looks gak.

I don't think the Green Hornet looks too bad. Could be a pretty cool re-imagining of a nearly-ancient character. I mean, some of the stuff in it looks really, really stupid, but it looks like it'll be in a similar vein to Men In Black (the first one... not that horrid sequel).

Yes, the lighcycles were cool. There was one thing I didn't get. There was this premise that dads lightcycle is the fastest thing on the grid. Ever.
So....what do they do with it in the story?
Nothing! They have it ridden to the city with a five seond screen shot then give it to a decoy and it is never seen thereafter. What a waste.

The music was written before the filming started so that the action scenes could be done around the soundtrack, so they weren't "shoe-horned in".

I'm not big on techno but I enjoyed the soundtrack.
Teh problem I have with the movie is that it violated one of the most fundamental rules of cinema, which is 'show, don't tell". Why are the ISO's important, let me tell you. A more apt title might have been TRON: Exposition. Still, I enjoyed it enough that I will no doubt get the Blu-Ray when it comes out.

Then you will be pleased!
I thought the movie stayed quite (almost too much) true to the original.
I, personally, would have preferred their jazzing it up a bit. The new star wars movies, for example, left much to be desired- but the lightsaber fights weren't one of them. In the originals, it's a slow, battle of wills almost... in the newer ones, there was actual "swordsmanship" abilities being displayed.
I thought the various light-wall-vehicle battles were awesome, but very slow... ditto to the disc battle.
They also kept the 80's feel heavy- high platform shoes, costumes very close to the original (tube lighting on the costumes, not CGI'ed in). There's something to be said for that, but honestly it felt like an 80's movie- and it's not the 80's anymore... also lots of slow, Slow dialogue! I agree with most of malfred's critiques above.
That said, as a huge fan of Tron, I'd still give it 3.5 stars out of 5. Well worth seeing if you liked the original!
