Command and conquer (including Tiberium and the red alert series)
Total Annihilation (Amazing game even with its age, also supream commander was kind of based on this)
Dawn of War
Warcraft 3 (although im guilty of spending most of my time on that playing mods like Angel Arena, custom hero arena, hero line wars, etc)

I would add Sins of a Solar Empire to that list. (Vasari FTW)

All enjoyable games in their own way.

Church: So it is a sword, It just happens to function like a key in very specific situations.
Caboose: Or it's a key all the time, and when you stick it in people, it unlocks their death.

Supreme Commander 1!

I love that game. Great balance and truly epic scale.

(although i did win the campaign by spamming thousands of planes regardless of how much anti air the opponent had)

Innovation is a tricky thing. But then again, no two persons ever agree on anything.

Stick to what you do best and the people will tell you it's a rehash: StarCraft 2.

Do something radical new and the people will hate you for it: Dawn of War 2.

Yea SC was pretty good. Very epic. And expansion was good too (I remember in order to win I had to crach a super UFO on top of the nuke powered commander!) But I hear they absolutely ruined SC2. Is that true?

I played the demo of it and it seemed they had capped the pop limit and restricted you more. it was a demo for the console though. But even that was enough to put me off of it.

Shogun: Total War is coming out and DoW2 is loads of fun. I do, however, wish there would be an Age of Empires IV.

Personally, I enjoy how games like DoW2 play out better than SC/SC2/Base Building games, I guess that is RTT vs RTS? I don't find setting minions to mine and building structures to be what keeps me interested in playing, but I know a lot of people do.

However, I do think you are right in how there aren't quite as many great RTSs being released now than back in the day of AoEmpires and the like. I'm a big fan of DoW2, but that is pretty much the only RTS I play.

Didn't dig too much on SC2 after I played so much SC1 back when it was popular, I was surprised.

I like the Total War series for its big setpiece battles and earnests attempts at authenticity, even if it's not quite as fast-paced as games like Starcraft.

I dont know what it was about number three but it was soooooo boring.

This is my list of favourite RTSs

Supreme Commander
Empires-Dawn of the modern world
Age Of Empires 2 Conquerors
DOW Dark Crusade

And last Stand from DOW 2 is my favorite game mode in an RTS

Probably work

Just a few pretty good RTSs that I can think of that have come out within the last 5 years or so:

Starcraft 2
Supreme Commander
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War

--

Dawn of War 2 just doesn't feel like a RTS. I like it enough, and I think it captured "40k" better than the first DoW, but I just don't want to call it an RTS. Starcraft 2 was pretty fun, but multiplayer required training like an athlete just to keep up. Supreme Commander was the closest thing resembling "innovation" that I've seen in this genre in a long time, but most of the fights just boiled down to "spam more units before they can and advance to experimental stage to win".

The best RTS and the one I'm still playing a year later is CoH. Seriously. An honest to god _STRATEGIC_ WW2 combat game with weapons behaving believably. Giant explosions. A game system designed with the expectation of team play, rather than as an afterthought. The chance to kill Nazis. That game has it all.

Assume all my mathhammer comes from here: https://github.com/daed/mathhammer

Supream Commander is very similar to Total annihilation, it helps that there are a wide variety of units and bulidings. And experimentals are powerful yes, but you can counter with your own or just by throwing a huge number of units at it.

In a steam indie mix pack I got Darwinia and Eufloria. Not exactly your traditional RTS's but unique I'd admit
