I dunno, I don't buy into the whole "man, star wars is so awesome" thing. I know it's geek heresy, but for me:
Star Wars: Pretty fun adventure romp, definitely worth watching a few times.
Empire Strikes Back: Really awesome adventure, really enjoyable, watch once a year, at least. On par with Die Hard.
Return of the Jedi: Pretty much as good as Star Wars, watch about as frequently.
The whole original trilogy? Really good to watch every few years, I tend to get a few beers and some junk food and switch off my brain.
So, I wasn't that invested in the prequels.
Phantom Menace: Good in bits, mostly kinda boring and nonsensical.
Attack of the Clones: Really bad. Nearly unwatchable. Worst was the acting and romance scenes, but the action and overall plot was just DULL.
Revenge of the Sith: Plot doesn't make sense, at all. Characters make no sense. Some good action and set pieces, but overall, not something I want to watch more than once.
I used to be president of the uni sci fi soc. I held a Star Wars marathon weekend, on the weekend there was riots in dublin. Nobody came along (our firefly marathon, by contrast, filled the room. Our yearly Cowboy Bebop marathons, likewise. Even our 80s kids fantasy weekend got 15 people.) So I sat watching the entire thing start to finish, just listening to radio reports of what was happening in Dublin and worrying about my mates at Leprecon, which was on in there. And it occured to me that as three movies one after another, the prequels weren't THAT BAD, but the second lot were much much better. I'm not a huge star wars fanboy, but that is how I felt. So I think it's prefectly fine to dislike the prequels, since, you'd expect with experience and all the extra money and licence the effects provided, we'd end up with something at least as good, if not better, but what we got was something pretty substandard, but expensive.
For me, if I let it, it really could diminish the awesomness of Empire Strikes Back if I thought hard about how nonsensical Vaders (and indeed the whole Empire's) origins were. The prequels took things we were happy to accept and made them make no sense. That's quite an achievement!
