I have to disagree. I've started upgrading my burny-boat pcs to 3 flamers + 1 HF and have found it to be one of the most consistent performers in the army. Partly for the increased effectivesness vs. armour, partly for the increased effectiveness vs. infantry. I also like the fact that if the squad takes heat and there's only one or two models left, it's nice that it's a HF that gets another round of burn.

The point is that the heavy flamer will toast nearly everything except MEq models, MCs and heavy duty characters.
Gants, Gaunts, Boyz, Guardians, Kroot and IG will die in droves.
Mid size Nids won't be killed but will be nearly automatically wounded.

That is false. As an Eldar player, I can tell you there is nothing I hate more than heavy flamers (well, maybe Hive Guard, but that's another story). While I wouldn't put heavy flamers everywhere, having one or two in an army is a good idea. It gives Guard infantry a way to really threaten Aspect Warriors, who typically rock the socks off Guardsmen. Being able to kill most of an Eldar squad with one dude is a great deterrent for the pointy-ears.

Personally, I find the extra 15 points for a Heavy Flamer a bit much. As stated before, you get free ones on Chimeras, and hey 4 flamers from a PCS is still a whole lot of hurt, even if your a terminator (MC need not apply).

Agree that as an Eldar player I hate hate hate heavy flamers, they really destroy my troops. But as a nascent IG player, I think that cheap regular flamers will still do the trick, and don't break the bank. The difference between a 4th flamer and a HF is 15 points, and I think that's better spent on a seperate weapon upgrade elsewhere.

In the imperial guard, there is little worse you can do than put flamers on anything with a BS4. For infantry flamers, a PCS is the best. They can take 1 more, shout orders and cost less. But you need a platoon of course.
Other than that, a heavy flamer doesn't ID anything yet, and while a S5 AP4 template is nice, I'd rather have three times as many regular hits.
If you really like fire, try the hellhound - it's one of a kind.
Either that, or you could take a banewolf for a magnificent bug spray effect.

Well the world isn't going to take over its' self now is it? And what kind of achievement will that be without fashionable henchmen? Normally this wouldn't have been a problem, but I had all my fashion designers executed.
Should anyone help design a new flashy uniform, I just might spare you on the day of judgement. MUHAHAHA!

I never use Heavy Flammers. Since flamers are close range weapons, I dent to think of them as one-shot weapons, because it's unlikely that I'll get to fire the weapon more then once a game. I'm fine with paying 5pts for a one shot flamer, but 20pts is to expensive for a heavy flamer I'll probably only ever use once in a game.

I think this is a pretty good explanation. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mastermind wrote:In the imperial guard, there is little worse you can do than put flamers on anything with a BS4. I'm nitpick-y. The cheapest way to add just three flamers is a CCS. If you have use for the extras, then a PCS will work, but there might be a rare case when you don't want another platoon. I've never seen such a case, but it could happen!

I am too. there's noway in Hades i'm wasting my CCS' bs4 on flamers. and if you already have a platoon, the cheapest way to add 3 flamers would be a SWS. not saying it's the most effective, but cheap.

Ah, but what if you had a list of only CCS and Veterans. I'm just saying that Infantry Platoons have extra costs that need to be acknowledged first.
It's not common, but it's entirely possible to want to put flamers on BS 4. I just don't like blanket statements. /shrug

in the times i have only CCS/Vets i put the H Flamer on the Chimeras. It's not a blanket statement for me. it's actual practice.

Wouldn't mix weapon types with eachother, although these can compliment eachother. If you are within melta range, you often are in flaming range.
I wouldn't put a plasmagun and a flamer in the same unit, though.
