How IS it punk? It is some pretty mainstream rock that ranges from soft to indie to alternative but stays far away from punk.

Thanks for the reply.

To explain myself: I don't really care what genre a song is. I just listen to music I like.
And with my limited understanding of different music types, I tought that they were punk-ish.

What is the definition of punk?

As with most music genre's its pretty hard to define punk, listen to some of the bands posted here and then compare them to paramore.

Punk is hard to define. In fact, its one of the hardest genres to define. The musicality itself varies intensely from band to band, and even songs from the band. For example, one of my favorite punk bands, Leftover Crack, has this song;

Where if you listen to nearly everything else they've ever done, its pretty hard core punk.

Punk is equally defined by the music and the lyrics/meaning/intent. Its pretty safe to say that anything you've ever heard on the radio ISN'T punk. Also, some bands change from punk to...something not punk. Popular example would be Rise Against. Their albums 'Revolutions Per Minute' and 'The Unraveling' are very well done punk albums, whereas 'Siren Song of the Counter-Culture' sits awkwardly on the fence unedecided and 'Sufferer and the Witness' diverged quite noticeably from their earlier albums. A Fire Inside went the same way, from 'Very Proud of Ya!' to whatever terrible album they just put out. Green Day too, Dookie is a phenomenal punk album, whereas their latest album is garbage.

But remember that punk began with disenfranchised youth and evolved into a sub culture that opposed right wing politics and supporting working class citizens while giving authority the finger. And the music is fast, loud, and proud. If you feel like throwing people around, causing general chaos and mayhem, and yelling 'Oi!'; you're listening to punk.

man a lot of warhammer gamers are into punk rock, is punk rock a gateway into war gaming????? I grew up listening to punk, seen countless awesome bands. However, these days I am into all kinds of music, and I think the punk idea transcends to many different genres. In the last decade underground hip hop definitely has a punk attitude to it. Here are some of my favorites

Yup.

This is where other music fans get the feeling that punk is sometimes an excuse for people to be antisocial and pretentious. Sorry. You can hear The Ramones on the radio, and if the Ramones aren't punk, the person doing the defining has a problem. You can also hear all the hardcore underground independent punk stuff on good college radio stations here and there. Although no argument that some bands really do change genre.

Where different fans draw the line varies widely, and sometimes at whatever they happen to enjoy from a given band. But this is a good sampling of how a given punk fan might make some comparisons.

Agreed again.

Much respect to most of the posts thus far. I think punk has been well encapsulated and most of the classic bands properly mentioned. Listening to the Bad Religion track which the OP opened with, my thoughts immediately went to some of the poppier/more melodic punk and punk-influenced bands, including two who got a ton of radio play. Dookie-era Green Day, and The Offspring's Smash. Just to be a punk-contrarian, though, I'd say some of the strongest songs off Smash aren't the radio singles; though. I'd particularly recommend "Nitro (Youth Energy)", "Bad Habit", and "Something to Believe In" for tracks.

If you really want to get into genre labels there is a plethora of sub genres with in punk, like:

grind core
crust
hard core
pop punk
surf punk
garage punk
ska punk
noise

However, I don't really delve into it all that much but some of my friends who own multiple thousands of records can really get into it. Punk is at it's core an idea really. The sound can vary.

I think this is the best definition I have heard of punk rock so far "fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY (do it yourself) ethic, with many

bands self-producing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels."
