If you really want to get into genre labels there is a plethora of sub genres with in punk, like:

grind core
crust
hard core
pop punk
surf punk
garage punk
ska punk
noise

However, I don't really delve into it all that much but some of my friends who own multiple thousands of records can really get into it. Punk is at it's core an idea really. The sound can vary.

No you misunderstand me. WHAT IS IT?

Punk is an idea, a concept. It is not doing what society tells you, not going along with the norm. Taking the path against the grain and less traveled. The music is loud and fast, and usually doesn't follow any type of classical progression or adhere to music theory. Loud and fast guitar riffs, with heavy bass lines, and drums usually going all over the place from basic tempo to improv. It is really hard to put into words, but if you click the youtube links you can at least get a taste for what punk sounds like.

The sound varies a lot from artist to artist because of their style or sub genre they fit into.

That is a good example of bands taking a classic genre like Celtic music and turning it into a louder, faster, heavier sort of music adding that punk twist. Punk is like Rock N Roll, but faster, louder, while not following the classic rock formula for a song.

I think what really defines punk over other forms of more aggressive styled rock such as hard rock and heavy metal is the stripped-down instrumentation making for a more simpler sound.

Stripped down is key.

The Sex Pistols were massively influential in part because of their attitude and aggression, and in part because they gave the impression that you didn't need any real skill to play and be in a band.

I don't think they gave that impression at all.

I think they proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Blacksails wrote:Punk is equally defined by the music and the lyrics/meaning/intent. Its pretty safe to say that anything you've ever heard on the radio ISN'T punk.

Inaccurate.

Green Day too, Dookie is a phenomenal punk album...

It's a very good, and very influential, pop album. It helped to usher in the era of 'kiddie-punk'. Which we don't seem to have quite shaken, judging by this thread.

But punk? Not even close. That whole genre is a sheep in wolf's clothing. '1,039/Smoothed-out Slappy Hours' was much better, in my opinion. But still not punk.

But remember that punk began with disenfranchised youth and evolved into a sub culture that opposed right wing politics and supporting working class citizens while giving authority the finger.

Completely inaccurate. Seriously, don't attempt to lecture people if you're not in full possession of the facts. All you're doing is perpetuating myths.

Supporting working-class citizens? Do me a favour! They were all middle-class art-school/fashion students at the outset. The Sex Pistols were manufactured by Malcolm McClaren and operated out of a trendy clothes shop ran by Vivienne Westwood. It was a fashion movement. The Ramones were middle-class, Richard Hell was from a wealthy background.

Everything is a pose. Nothing is 'real'.

Crom wrote:I think the punk idea transcends to many different genres. In the last decade underground hip hop definitely has a punk attitude to it.

This is closer to the truth.

Punk is at it's core an idea really. The sound can vary.

Agreed, although I would go further and say that fashion is a key component as it is intimately linked to the attitude and ethos.

The music is loud and fast, and usually doesn't follow any type of classical progression or adhere to music theory.

Inaccurate. Punk music is fairly heavily indebted to 1-4-5 progressions (or varitions on that general theme), and numerous examples of these types of progressions can be found both in western art music and popular music. And of course it adheres to musical theory, even if it is incredibly simplistic - there are few atonal avant-jazz punk bands out there! Punk is tonally conventional, pedestrian even.

That is a good example of bands taking a classic genre like Celtic music and turning it into a louder, faster, heavier sort of music adding that punk twist.

We have no real idea what celtic music would sound like, as they never wrote it down. If you're talking about 'Irish folk music'.... many of the 'classic' canon of 'Irish Folk' song are actually old songs from the English folk tradition, which is in itself heavily adulterated - it's not genuine 'folk' music. Just a point of interest.

Punk is like Rock N Roll, but faster, louder, while not following the classic rock formula for a song.

I would disagree with that, for the reasons I've already put forward.

Mannahin wrote:The Sex Pistols were massively influential in part because of their attitude and aggression, and in part because they gave the impression that you didn't need any real skill to play and be in a band.

Actually, that really only starts when Sid Vicious joins the band. Up until that point, the musicians that made up The Sex Pistols were actually competent players. It was more studied insouciance than anything. Of course, after THAT you get bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, none of whom new how to play their instruments when they played their first gig, so the legend goes. Not sure I believe it.

Alby, that's why I said they "gave the impression". I know the other guys were able to play. But the style they chose was sloppy and rough and eschewed displays of technique (like solos) as wankery. Even though they were able to play their instruments, the audience definitely got a sense of "I don't need serious skills to be in a band."

There are guitar solos in Sex Pistols songs, if memory serves.

That's possibly the only GG song that's "safe" to post here, the man definitely "practiced what he preached"...of course that's why he's dead now.

Concerning "punk" musicians inability to play their instruments, while it's true that some bands indeed had no idea how to play when starting out, most quickly learned the basics and went on to put out some very good music.
The Germs are an excellent example,at their very first show, not a single member of the band could really play,a fact they camouflage with a lot of on stage "chaos",but in time the Germs went on to become one of the LA punk scenes most important bands.

That's true, early GG is extreamly tame in comparison with his later material.
It seems as though the older GG got the angrier he became, the man just embraced his nihilistic self destructive image in every way he possibly could.
As depraved as GG got he did exude a certain honesty...he honestly never pretended to care about anyone...even himself.
In the early 90's I went to a GG Allin show,by the third song the man had beaten the hell out of himself and by the seventh song the club owner was calling the cops to shut the show down...*shrug* that was GG.

GG onstage was..interesting,he seemed intent on taking all the "rock and roll horror stories" parents told each other and making them a reality, draw a line saying something was in bad taste and GG would cheerfully step right over it.
Of course his self proclaimed "mission" was to make rock & roll "dangerous" again.

Ok, well this is a topic i could spend a LONG time writing about but i will try and not write too much. There are some AWESOME suggestions here and some of my fav punk bands mentioned (Black flag, Minor Threat & Rancid particularly) but if you want to start with the more hmm......punk-pop(ish)/skate punk bands like Bad Religion i would suggest some of these:

(s) = Ska-punk

Bad religion (obviously)
NoFx
Pennywise
The Vandals
Tsunami Bomb
The Distillers
Alkaline Trio
Blink 182 (the earlier stuff like Cheshire Cat & Dude Ranch)
Rancid (s)
Streetlight Manifesto (s)
Catch 22 (s)
A.F.I
The Aquabats (s)
The God Awfuls
Reel Big Fish (s)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (punk band that covers pop(ular) songs
Less Than Jake (s)
Greenday (earlier stuff)
The Living End
No Comply (s)
Operation Ivy (s)
Rise Against
The Offspring
[Spunge] (s)
The Suicide Machines
Voodoo Glow Skulls (s)
Millincolin
Goldfinger (s)
Anti-Flag
Against All Authority (s)
Flogging Molly
Dropkick Murpheys
Mad Caddies (s)
Big D and the Kids Table (s)

...there are LOADS more but these are the more 'mainstream' bands I can think of atm...

Still, if you're looking for all types of punk there are plenty mentioned but also a few more suggestions (that i dont think have been mentioned):
The casualties
Circle Jerks
The Exploited
D.O.A
Decendants
Sub Humans
The Adicts
The Buzzcocks
Rudimentary Peni
GBH
T.S.O.L

....and one of my favorite bands, although most punk fans probably wont class them as real punk (they ARE a punk-thrash band)

Hopefully all this will help you a little!

Yeah I am into all sorts of music. Punk, hardcore, hiphop, motown, classical, blues, country, you should see my record collection very "all over the place."

some more artists, which aren't necessarily punk, but good none the less:

any metal band that does a theme album based off of Moby Dick is cool in my book:

Gotta have some straight edge hard core in there:

*note I am NOT straight edge

Also, NOFX has been one of those bands that has been out forever and has always put out decent music. I know a lot of people hate them, for being too "mall punk," or for whatever other reason. However, when this song came out, it made me realize how awesome of a band they are. This is a two parter because the song is 18 minutes long.
