Don't you mean IF? I have seen nothing to even hint at 6th ed next year & honestly 5th is fine. To pseudo quote Ivan Chesnokov "WHY YOU WANT :Bleep: GAME?!? GAME IS FINE!"

Because new editions come out every 4 years creaing a nice sales bump for GW and making us all buy new books and new toys to stay up to date.

GW would be FOOLS not to release a 6th edition in 2012. I think we should assume it's coming unless GW actually says it's not.

It's only ever been four years once (4th to 5th) and I hope it's not going to become a trend.

And yet again, the Chaos Gods fall for it.

There can't be other explanation for it. 13 consecutive fails and Mister A still doesn't get an extra pair of every mutation in the big book? I bet his retorics change completely when he's dealing with the Big Four.

Fixed that for you, but I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment. I'd advocate leaving the "historicals" to Forgeworld and the stories to BL, however. What we need from GW are more models and more rules.

10,000 years of stasis is hardly an exciting background for a science fiction game, nor is a continuation of stasis into the future.

I should think it is probably interesting to read about two or three Black Crusades. It can't be as interesting to read about the 6th, 13th, or 27th.

The fluff has supposedly brought the galaxy to a ferment in the current era.

Orks are on the rise. The Tyranids and Necrons threaten all life, while the Tau offer a different way forwards. Everything points to and demands an evolving story, not reprises of the Imperial past.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I kind of hope they don't move it forward much. Certainly nothing Earth-shatteringly since that'd invalidate a lot of people's ideas/armies.

Besides, for my money Battletech jumped the shark when they tried to move their timeline forward and introduced the Clans. Horrible, horrible decision IMHO.

Why do you think it's stasis? There isn't an exhuastive amount of detail, that's true, but you can hardly cram too much detail into a gap of over 10,000 years.

I honestly don't see how they would move forwards with the storyline without drastically altering the situation (not to mention the name of the game).

Stasis == nothing major changing.

That's why I favour the Emporer dying. It will put a bit of excitement back into things.

They don't sustain life indefinitely even the dreads are placed into stasis for a while.
And the emperor can't be placed in stasis because he won't able to do his whole "Astronimicon" trick

A lot of people think their fluff is awesome.

Besides, they just need hire two or three decent novelists out of Black Library to write up a good future timeline. They could tack it onto the book deal they will need at the same time to sell novels set in the new era.

I agree that the fluff is awesome. The problem is it would be hard to do... though hiring better authors would be part of the solution... also might be useful to rewrite some fluff segments.

warhammer 41k!

it could just be cool if the extended the timeline out to the conclusion of the story.

i mean, we know how WWII ended, but its still reenacted in games, movies, etc over and over. 40k could be the same way.

It doesn't need to go to the end of the story.

The way I see it, 40K is at the moment like the western front during most of the First World War.

A planet is lost here, another planet is won back there. Some planets, such as Armageddon and Cadia, go backwards and forwards between the sides.

Whilst this is all very GrimDark(tm) it is rather dull.

By killing the Emporer, a whole new era is opened up in which all kinds of blazing campaigns, desperate missions, battles, and strategic movements, can be justified.

Finally, the IoM can undertake that promised crusade to destroy the Tau.

The Eldar can invade the Web Way and attack Commorragh directly, assisted by hordes of Exodite troops.

The Orks and Necrons can team up for a massive alliance against the Tyranids.

Honestly, I think actually killing the Emperor would be too radical a change. I agree that something big could happen, such as the Imperium split in two (either in a civil war or the High Lords decide to repeat what the Ancient Romans did) but actually killing the Emperor changes the dynamic of the game too much.

Finally, the IoM can undertake that promised crusade to destroy the Tau.

Or they leave them for the Nids to finish off.

The Eldar can invade the Web Way and attack Commorragh directly, assisted by hordes of Exodite troops.

I don't think the Exodites have that kind of close relationship with the Craftworld Eldar, indeed many view them as too close to those that caused the Fall (even compared to DE).

The Orks and Necrons can team up for a massive alliance against the Tyranids.

Okay, now you're just being silly.

I wonder if the Eldar would actually do that. They have some bad blood and have fought each other several times, but it "could be" somewhat counter-productive to their overall agenda*.

Maybe Eldar fluff expanding on the fate of Eldrad (if he did leave imprints on multiple soulstones [super-seer council?]), and some more light shined on Ynnead.

Or the Imperium expanding towards the Veil or Halo stars where Macharius stopped...

*unless they're killing them to provide more souls for Ynnead. But I don't think it'd work that way...
