I can understand why GW are freezing things here, it's the same reason Spider Man is always 20 something rather than being a 50 something divorced guy.

Ever since GW started adding name brand heroes like Yarrick, Gazgull and Ragnar advancing the GRIMDARKONLYWAR timeline means letting things change.

But at this point it's hurting the long-established logic of the game universe. It's supposed to take years and years to organize crusades and move IG regiments but somehow Armeggedon 3 and the 13th Black Crusade only took a year each.

Anyone think they'll move forward when 6th edition comes out next year?

Possibly, but by a very small and insignificant amount. Might add one or two events to the timeline, can't really see much happening though.

Officially? I doubt it.

The Black Crusade and 3rd Battle for Armegddon commenced in the final year of the millenium. I think the general gist is that right up until now the storyline has been setting the background, and all battles undertaken by actual players occur either during these events or shortly after.

I was thinking it would advance somehow after the 13th Black Crusade. Kinda lost hope afterwards.

I would defiantly like to see GW russel some feathers with some big changes in 6th Ed.

Eventhough I like where things are currently in 40k fluff, I would like to see:

Tyranid Maw exspanding

Necron Tombs opening up in unexpecting places, perhaps Mars?

Possibly a return of a primarch.

M41Y999 to M42Y000

These a just a few, I'm thinking. Adding changes like that, will have the community talking...The galaxy needs to be shaking up again, helps getting the creative juices flowing.

GW is never going to move the plot forward significantly. Too much work, not enough profit.

I think with 1,000 years to work with they need to start filling in the gaps rather than plowing on.
The Sabat Crusade took place during the 700s I think, what about the first 200 years of the millenium? We could find out who the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines was before Calgar or similar, what happened during one of the other black crusades.
There's enough scope and time for the Imperium to have waged a major 500 year long war with an alien race that was eventually wiped out or at least sent packing. Winding back the clock should be the next step.

I second that.
Advancing the story line would mean working on the 13th black crusade and armageddon 3rd. At the end of the 41st millenium, these two wars were still going on and locked into a stalemate. This situation reflected the results of the two GW world campains (minor victory for chaos in the black crusade and minor victory for IoM on armageddon). Advancing the storyline would mean writing the end of these two wars, and thus clearly naming a victor (like saying: the IoM finally eradicated Chaos from cadia, or Chaos completed the conquest of the cadian sector and is advancing on terra), which would contradict the results of the world-wide campains.

I agree with cadbren, if GW was to release another world-wide campain or event, it would take place sometime in the past.

I doubt it will ever change. If anything GW are starting to move backwards (see the re-introduction of 'dead' special characters) rather than forwards. I think the status quo is to keep the time-line where it is and expand on the history of the 40k universe rather than the present day.

Not to mention that if they did advance the story the IoM is essentially going to crumble with the darkening of the Astronomican (sp?) and the supposed eventual death of the Emperor. I think this would be shaking the bedrock foundations a little too savagely for GW's liking.

As mentioned on other thread highly unlikely for GW to progress it much for the wargame - what do they gain comared to potential loses.

Of course certain Black Library novels already have references to the period beyond the wargame's timeline into the next miillenium.

so its been done but quietly and with little references to any big changes - save that appears the Tryanids are not as big a problem - references to the later wars against the Tryanids in the past tenses............

I don't really see the need to move the timeline forward. There are still hundreds of unanswered questions to be answered from the previous ten thousand years. IMO the least intriguing thing about 40k, compared to everything else, is what is going to happen in M42. The place where the real story is happening is M31 and they are revealing more and more about that with every HH novel. And for those who think that wont suffice remember the past can tell you about the future.

I kind of like how much of the past is left unsaid or unexplored. The Vandire regime probably was much of an 'End Times' situation as the current M41Y999 is, if not worse. With Terra under siege, the Imperium on the verge of collaspe I think the Imperium has been through more than one crisis or two like the 13th Crusade or Armageddon.

The history of the first battle for Armageddon is a little hazy, aside from the climax, I think that could make a great campaign.

Have you read the White Dwarf about it? They dedicated 10 pages to it. That to this day has to be my most favorite lore.

But that was mostly about the involvement of the Space Wolves, the finale and subsequent pissing off of the SW. I thought that they kind of brushed over the actual invasion itself, which I think would leave a lot of room for a campaign.

What about a campagin on Sebastian Thor? That would be the perfect excuse to pit Imperium forces against one another.

Backwards is the new forwards!

I'm not calling for the death of the Emperor and the dawn of Warhammer 50k, just move 50, 100 years onwards.

We're actually at 995.999.M41 that's crazy. They really will have to break the .M42 barrier if they're updating anything like the Tyranid codex again.

In a way they already have. We know that the Inquisition still araound and is happily publishing books as late as 127.M42

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

The Ciaphas Cain series. The entire series is Cain's personal journals edited by and distributed to other inquisitors. The notes the editing inquisitor (I forget her name) are dated well into M42.

It would be nice if they moved it forward a bit, just the feeling of progression would be good. They can movge forward 100 years without any major power changes, just have the old battles dying out and new ones appear. The problem for me isn't that things are boring just that it I know nothing is going change. Slowly pushing the timeline forwards gives the impression things could happen without them evr making major changes.

Whether or not it is fine, the GW business plan demands frequent invalidation of rules and codexes in order to create revised or new rules to stimulate orders for new models.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Sadly that is true killkrazy. But my major point was that usually GW drops some sort of hint or there are rumors of the next edition.

So far it seems that the only thing people are going on is "Well 8th ed (WHFB) is done so 6th must be right around the corner."
