We have no purpose. Life is just life. As I'm sure has happened on billions of other worlds, life arose out of a bunch of random organic soup, gradually gained intelligence, and prospered until we became what we are today. Thinking about how insignificant I am makes me just want to go out there and explore what's out there, and it makes me sad that we can't. The distances involved are just incomprehensible. We are insignificant in out own galaxy, let alone the billions of other galaxies out there. All of this eventually leads to me thinking this thought : Fund our Damn space program, America!

People aren't insignificant, it is just extremely difficult to measure our impact on the world around us. For example, the number of times that we have launched rockets from the florida launch site has acutally moved the earth out of its original rotation. The difference is slight, and scientists haven't discovered, or haven't disclosed, the impact of such a change. However, it is tangible, and therefore, it is on some level significant. We are all connected via the butterfly affect (I know I sound like a preachy hippy, but I'm also right, so stuff it) but if your part of this phenomena is 1/1000000000000000000000000000, that is infinitely larger than zero. But that's just my pep-talk.

Why worry about it? I mean really? We live in an age of some pretty amazing discoveries but sadly we also live in an age where we are to far away from them. You just have to live with that fact, and enjoy the most important part. That your alive

Sure you are insignificant now, but one day your descendents will make the universe tremble at their very footfall and turn stars on and off like light bulbs.
When that happens they will not remember your name or that you existed, but the fact that you did exist will stand as the sole reason that they will enjoy their place among the stars.
Yes, and we will learn how to store our consciousness in the fabric of space itself, and then send some big black Monoliths down to some planet somewhere where there are a bunch of apes and teach them how to use tools.

Or we'll have another extinction event and there will be no humans at all.

Or we'll just move to Mars or Titan. I vote Titan. No solar cheese stripping the atmosphere away.

Also how my life has the opportunity to both fail and prosper. About how little we know about our deep inner reason to exist in this universe of uncertainty. About how i only escape the crushing weight of everything slowly grinding down on me by the distraction of halo on-line multi-player. I seem incapable of focus when i have all these questions that even the greatest minds cannot understand. All this leads to me having a very pessimistic view of life and i just wondered if any one knew how to ease the flow of questions raking my brain

The wonderful quandary of life is whether we have a purpose or not.
If we do have some preset purpose of which we are not aware, would it be any different than having no purpose?
If we have a preset purpose or destiny which we are bound to fulfill, then do we possess free will?
If we have no external purpose, then are we incapable of creating a purpose for ourselves? And would such a purpose be any less valid than a purpose given by another entity?
This should intenisfy your crisis of self, and hopefully make the boon you bring back from that quest more worthwhile.
I highly recommend John Paul Sartre's "Grendel" for a good read on the subject.

Which category do you fall in?
I want both, and I won't stop until I have both.

Why yes, the Dark[voidof40k] arts are at work here. Although it was actually 3+ months old.
Nonetheless, I revived it because I wanted to add my thoughts based on previous posts, and it is a topic worthy of continued discussion.
