Measured by weight or surface area or what?

I think they just eyeball it, frankly. It's an arbitrary number that really never makes sense and only applies to bigger things like Dreads and vehicles.

Manchu wrote:
Kanluwen wrote:It's nice looking and all, but it really doesn't do that much to differentiate itself from a normal Chimera.
Disagree.

When all you need to duplicate the overall 'feel' of the design is to just glue the portholes for the lasguns shut and a lil' bit of plasticard for the turret/body...
It doesn't do too much to differentiate itself.

Although, in all honesty, for around the price of this conversion kit? I could get a much nicer, complete 32mm vehicle like:
http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=AC35016 or
http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=AC35022

At least not $35 worth of "difference" in my opinion.
Agree.

I think that's where this kit kind of falls short. They're basically pricing themselves equivalent to Forge World's Chimera conversion kits, but offering less overall "oomph" factor.

...And just having looked, apparently most of FW's Chimera conversion stuff(the interiors and rear doors) look to be gone. Interesting!

Strokes for folks, as they say. I think the rounded edges really give the Chimera a strong Soviet feel. I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing a Chimera. It's a rather dashing little conversion that I wouldn't think twice about ordering if it was priced closer to $15.

Even at $15 it feels too expensive to me to make a 'Soviet APC' when I can get a whole kit from Zveda for $20

Dunno how keen I am on recasting parts of GW parts . . .

Can I just say "called it!" on the bits of plasticard?

It's nice and all, he clearly put...some effort, I guess, into it. But at the end of the day: $35 for that in addition to the cost of a Chimera?

No matter how you try to spin it, you're still paying $35 for what you can do in an afternoon with some plasticard.

Every tournament I've been to, if they have a rule about GW components, uses the % test for scratch builds or elaborate conversions. If a model is still for the most part a GW model, it doesn't matter much what you add. So using this kit would be ok, as you still need a complete chimera to build it.

It don't really like it, sorry. It looks too squishy. The turret is odd too.

But good idea

i like the back door and the turret. i dont' like the top hatch but the lasgun fireports are very good. I also agree with others on the price, doubling the cost of the vehicle puts it way out of reach for most people.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

I think it looks great. It makes the vehicle appear to have weight, something a lot of GW models fail to achieve.

I'm a bit ashamed of the responce of the forum. yes it is a bit expensive, but at least the stuff he's knocking out is pretty good.

Ok, I'm not happy about the recast bits, but considering the glowing love applied to some of the garbage offered up it is a bit much!

Which would be an equally slowed reason for blasting him. Can't we all just agree recasting is bad and go from there?

OP, I would suggest selling the "Lasgun slot" covers as part fo the set, along with the top and the turret. Leave the body to the actual Chimera model. That has two benefits:

One, cheaper to make/sell.

Two, no more recasting parts.

I think it'll be a win all around.

Agreed, I am the first one to advocate for add-ons for kits. Saying that, recasting the top chassis of the chimera and adding round gunports to it is still recasting and firmly infringes upon the copyright of the original model.

Cheaper is better, sure you wont net as much per model but that will be made up by how many you sell. Usually it takes 20-30 years for a business to start demanding GW "weight-in-gold(or more like silver)" prices.

Seems equivalent of paying more for Forgeworld. \

25 USD for a kit.

What puts it over might be the shipping.

*You can't be insulting about it. Kanluwen I am looking in your direction.

I like th top hatches and the back hatches. The turrent does do it for me. I like a little more angular predator tankish myself and would do that style if converting. But thats personal preference.

I think it's a really neat kit. It's just far too pricey for me at this point (I also already have enough built and painted chimeras), but if I were to do a new IG army from the ground up I'd consider it.
