Your black to red blending is very good. There is something that just seems odd to me, but cant place it. Maybe too many colors? Seems like it could have done without the yellow and/or blue.
And I agree that a less glossy clear would be good, you can then 'ardcoat or other gloss the gems and lenses.

Thanks. I didn't want the bag to be just black, so since yellow is also a complementary Ulthwe color (from what I'd read) I decided to try this (will also be using it on the Warlocks' small bags). The blue was added in on all of the minis I'm doing as a "what the heck, it's fun" thing - I didn't want the minis to be all boring looking by being just the plain black & bone. I'd hoped that the satin finish wouldn't be so shiny, but I guess this is just how it will be - next can will be for the matte finish, and then I'll do the gems with the satin individually...

OK, have 3 Ulthwe Warlocks completed (pics below). Hopefully they'll pass inspection with all the Eldar supporters out there! Not sure who will be next on the "painting block" next weekend; suggestions welcome and invited (see earlier post of all those waiting to be painted)! Again, the Warlocks still need to be based, but otherwise I think they're done...

OK, I'm up against a dilemma. For those of you who have been following this blog, I need to know (regular response or PM) whether or not you feel that I'm out of line calling my minis Ulthwe. It's been brought to my attention by someone in my gaming group that I cannot call them Ulthwe because I'm using colors that are not in the Ulthwe palette (black and bone). I've done research that says that dark red and yelllow are acceptable colors to use as well (though not official by GW), and I've done the bits of blue for the whimsy. Am I out of my freakin' mind calling these guys Ulthwe, or am I OK using the name because most of the coloring is consistent with their colors? And does this mean that I can't call my Eldrad "Eldrad" because I didn't paint him in just the black & bone? I don't think I'm going to paint any more of my minis until I get this resolved, because I need to figure out if I have to repaint ALL of my minis now. ALL comments would be most welcome and appreciated. Thanks. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

As an eldar player myself, i would have to say you definetly can claim your army ulthwe. What if they are stationed on a maiden world and decided to add some of the local flora to their garb? What if they are pirates or raiders of an Ulthwe descent. Its pretty hard to fit eldrad in fluff wise because isnt he already dead.(rip)
your paint job is solid but...
IMHO the blue shoes and accents are too much with the red accents. I've found blue and red usually dont look good together, especially with white in the mix. Also IMHO i would like to see more accents of the individualized Aspect shrine colors on your aspect warriors. More bleached bone and less yellow, red, and blue accents on the warlocks, farseer, vehicles, and eldrad. Your paint shading and soul stones look awesome! You did a real good job with that!
thats my two cents! All in all i think your army is coming along nicely and thank you for sharing it with all us dakkites!

Thanks for your input lonedrow02, I really appreciate it. Would you recommend losing the blue shoes on Eldrad & the Farseer to make them more authentic, then? I can see it 's a bit TOO much color for them, but would hate to lose just the little bits on the arm & boot straps for the aspect units. What does everyone else think?

OK - decision made regarding colors. Looking at all the pics, I think that there may be too much of the blue - so I'm going to go back and change all the shoes/boots to black/grey. I'll leave the straps blue, just for the hint of blue coloring - will give that added touch of whimsy I was looking for. That may be my project for this weekend!

OK, updates are pretty much done. Actually changed the blue tabs on the DA's boots & arms to dead white, along with changing the boots on all models from blue to black. Have to do a bit of a wash on the DA's tabs to cover up a little bit of remaining blue, but otherwise I think I can live with the new colors. Hopefully they're now more in keeping with Ulthwe colors. Have a pic below of pretty much one of every unit or group I've done thus far - Prism, Avatar, old & new Walkers, Jet Bike, Reaper, Spider, DA, Warlock, Farseer & Eldrad. Am thinking of doing either a unit of Banshees or a unit of Guardians next - will probably keep to the more traditional Craft World colors (instead of doing the traditional Aspect colors for each unit, I'm going to keep to the Ulthwe colors) - but may add in a bit of the Aspect color(s), such as adding in a bit of Snot Green to the Scorpions (when I get to them). One of these days when I run into a brick wall for painting ideas, I'll actually get everybody based as well!

Last weekend I started working on a unit of Guardians that I'd purchased on eBay - all the bodies were a dark Smurf blue, bases are blue & green. I think that I'm getting close to finishing them up - Bodies black, helmets & boot/arm tabs bone. Will be doing some of the fabric things gory red, then doing the gems in the scarlett red & orange fire (Vallejo's) that I've done for the past few weeks. These guys I CANNOT photograph and post without doing the bases because it looks so garish with the smiurf & lime bases, so I'm going to base them as well (later today or tomorrow). Didn't yet start the weapons platforms I have, but will start them next.

Guardians are finished (see below)!! Will be starting the two weapons platforms this afternoon. No bits of blue on these guys, just kept it to the straight Ulthwe colors (with bits of gory red for sashes etc). Am pretty happy with the bases - MUCH better than the awful blue & green they were on (pic listed of this as well)!

Heavy Weapons Platforms are now completed. I'd originally wanted to use the scarlett red in the veins on the body of the support, but opted instead to use the dead white to be more in keeping with the Ulthwe colors. Put the decals on for help with identification, am not sure whether I like them or not. Not really sure what project will be for next weekend; I've got to get some new brushes for detail (mine are all destroyed) so doubt I'll be doing the Banshees or Scorpions. Have a D-cannon (old metal one) with 2 guardians that I might do next weekend since I doubt I'll need much detail work on that (other than the gems). Will do another pic with the D-cannon and a better one of the Support Weapons when I get more batteries for my camera...

Project for this weekend (will only have ~1 1/2 days to work on it): old metal D-cannon with 2 Guardians. Will do with scheme used with previously pictured Guardians & Weapons Support Platforms; when I'm done will post a pic of the D-cannon & the 2 Guardians, as well as a better pic of the Platforms I posted last weekend. Thanks for following; please remember that all comments & PM's are invited and MOST welcome!

Your certainly very dedicated to this post aren't you! I look forward to seeing the old models added to the army. I like the simplicity of the bases too. I think it really adds to scheme.
Looking at the previous heavy weapons I think that basing them will be all the difference. I think that the large block of black at the bottom is what is detracting from your love. Not sure if a think layer of bone at the bottom of the large panels may break it up a bit more. Either way I look forward to seeing them in the new photos.

Thanks for the suggestion - I like it. I'm going to keep the panels black, as I think that a relatively lage bone panel would make them look less organic & smooth, but the bases being painted bone is a WONDERFUL idea. I'll do that after I get the D-cannon completed. Thanks for following!

D-cannon's done! I also did as taffiarti suggested and colored the bases for the Heavy Weapons Platforms, but did them in Vallejo's silver grey instead of bone (used the silver grey on practically EVERY weapon thus far). The D-cannon doesn't really sit securely on the base (got it used, a bit rickety), but I think it still looks pretty good. Next week - will probably do bases or will do one of the Phoenix Lords, check back Friday or Saturday for a note on what project will be! Thanks for following, and have a great week everyone...

I'm back! Won't have as much time over this weekend for painting, as I'm doing something special for my nephew's birthday cake (will have pics of THAT later, as well). Decided on doing the Rangers - have 5 of them to work on. Will be doing a camo cape with the Ulthwe black & bone colors. Weapons will be the standard (for me) silvergrey and white...

Cake is DONE - we were limited with time, so I didn't get the gears done as well as I'd wanted to do, so it doesn't look that great. Anyway, here's a pic of the cake and the Grownie (the creature my nephew created, now in 3D). Inside's actually a Boston Cream, and the little sculpture on the top is solid chocolate! Will hopefully have pics of the Rangers posted tomorrow before evening...

Rangers are DONE!!! The uniform under the cloaks are still Ulthwe (except for the brown gauntlets & boots), but I'm happy with how the camoflage turned out. It'll be a bear when i get MORE of them to add to the squad because of the color blending I did for the cloaks. Used a combination of Vallejo colors: Leather Brown, Sand Yellow, Med. Olive Green, and a little of Silver Grey. I'm pretty happy with how the washes turned out on this set - think I'm getting the hang of doing them better! Comments will be most welcome. Project for next weekend to be determined... options: Banshees, Scorpions, and 3 Phoenix Lords. Hmmmmmm...

Weekend project will be Fire Dragons. Was basing Eldrad, Farseer & 3 Warlocks (see pic below) and found my Fire Dragon exarch in with my bitz (decided to not use any for the bases), therefore I figured I may as well get the unit done now. The regular Dragons are really old models, and look a little like munchkins because they're so small - but they'll do. Color palette will be primarily Ulthwe with black & bone, but will also be using more of the gore red again as well (especially fading the helmets from black to red at the edges). Weapons will again be silver grey and dead white. Hope to have them done by Monday.
On another note, I found it odd that the cake pic that wound up going in the gallery have gotten 3 votes! Who would've thought that anyone would vote on THAT! Weird, it has more votes than other 40k Eldar things I've had posted for weeks! Sigh...

Finished the Fire Dragons much earlier than I'd expected - see below. Don't have the best lighting to take individual pics, so the group shot with the exarch will have to suffice for now. Next week's project is up for grabs - Banshees or Scorpions, or possibly one of the Phoenix Lords! Comments always welcome. Thanks for following the blog!

Project for weekend of 04/09/11: finally getting to the Phoenix Lords. Will start with Fuegan, as suggested by pic below will be following similar scheme used with the Dragons. Will probably do Asurman next, but doubt I'll be getting to him this weekend. We'll see! Finished pic will be posted tonight, tomorrow, or Monday (will keep you readers checking back)! Hope everyone out there has a WONDERFUL weekend. May have a game tonight (has been ~2 months since my last one, but OH how joyful & rewarding it will be to see so many painted minis on the table)!

I'm a happy camper! Actually got Fuegan completed in ~8 hours! Have a better pic below of a Fire Dragon & the exarch, one pic of these two with Lord Fuegan, and then two pics of Lord Fuegan (front & back). Amazing, this one's even based before I posted pics! Not sure if I'll be starting on Lord Asurman tomorrow, or if I'll be working on another project (can't write about it because a certain PERSON reads my blog, so can't post any spoilers).
For those who are wondering what ever happened with the Guardian squad I was taking the arms off of, there are 4-5 guys that I'll need to do putty to get the arms back on and looking half decent - so they're going to be a long way off before I get them completed. Remaining minis yet to be done include: Lord Asurman, Lord Jain Zar, 2 units of Banshees, a unit of Scorpions and 2 groups of Harlies. If anyone out there would recommend that I start one of the other units (other than the Harlies, which scare me poopless at the thought of painting the diamond patterns), let me know! Thanks again for reading, everyone! :-)

Hah! Finally I get a chance to get on & speak about the HUGE project! I alluded to a project I was starting on - spent pretty much the whole week working on a full-scale model and balsa models to make molds for chocolate pieces for all the stuff to make an Ork Trukk birthday cake. My sister says I was being crazy trying to get it together, but after spending ~14 hours yesterday pouring chocolate and trying to get the chocolate out of the molds, SUCCESS. Many of the chocolate pieces broke, so it looks really junky, but I think the whole approach will be worth it when my nephew sees it. It's not yet assembled completely, but it will have a working side ramp affixed to the side of the cake, and one of my nephew's Orks will be on top with a Killa Kan to drive it. Will have the pics posted later tonight, so check back & give me your opinion on it! It's a first try, and thank GOODNESS it's for an Ork piece - anything else couldn't look as junky! :-P

Ork Trukk birthday cake was a hit. Thank goodness THAT's out of the way - feels like I just passed a big finals exam and can now breathe a bit easier. Two pics are below, will be getting more from a friend that I'll post at a later time. Cake, in case anyone is interested, was layers of banana and chocolate with cream cheese icing and marshmallow fondant for the coatings - works great for a solid cake covering. Most of the chocolate bits were molded by hand, but others (like engine block, exhaust stack, etc) were made of modeling chocolate (chocolate & corn syrup mix). NOW I can get back to my Eldar mini painting! Asurman will likely be next on the block - don't know if I'll do him tomorrow & Monday or if I'll simply take a break for a week. Check back later...

Oh, I forgot! For those who are interested in how the Ork Trukk cake was done - was actually pretty heavy (bottom layer banana, 2nd layer chocolate, 3rd layer and part on top banana), cream cheese icing in between, marshmallow fondant to cover all of the cake parts. Cake tins were 9"x 13". Wheels were french crullers, chain for wrecking ball was black string licorice (took a while to find) tied in knots & stretched a little. ALL pieces on this cake were edible! Modeling chocolate used for the engine block & air intake, exaust pipe, and headers. Molded chocolate used for all of the rest - white, regular & dark. Molds were made from a food-grade polymer resin (expensive) for a few pieces, then did plaster of Paris for the rest (coated with coconut oil). I would NOT recommend using the plaster of Paris for molding chocolate to anyone ever again - it was pretty much a disaster, had lots of chocolate breakage trying to get the pieces out (reason why the grill & front spikes look so funny). Side ramp was mobile, and could go up & down - until the bottom part of the ramp broke. Chocolate poured in plaster also seemed more brittle than that done in the polymer resin. Hubcaps were poured chocolate as well. Started out with a cardboard mock-up for the cake, then moved to carved balsa bits to make the molds, then the rest goes from there. Spent a whole WEEK working on this thing, and will likely never do it again (unless I've got the money to do the good resin molds)! Everyone's enjoying eating the cake up - still a little bit left, if anyone's interested! ;-D
