If I could run it from home then maybe. But i still want to be wealthy one day so NOOOOO.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

I'd love it, but it's so hard to make happen at the FLGS. They only have like two full time employees, the store manager and the assistant. You've got to work years at part time minimum wage before they'd even consider you for one of those spots.

I've considered it. While not quite an FLGS, my local GW has an opening. I'm considering sending in my application.

I think I would enjoy it, but I wouldn't enjoy the 300% or more pay cut I would take.

If I could do it in the evenings and not have such a retail aspect to it ... maybe.

But I like my dayjob making 12.00 an hour. with long term wealth increasing opportunites lol. Its all going to the hobby anyways

Man, I guess I'm really lucky. The retail aspect of the job hasn't been that bad, I get 16.5 hours a week, and I'm already making 12 an hour after less than a year there. It's a great supplement to my savings account and I get to by a couple of new toys every two weeks or so without having to take it out of my regular income.

Thus far, it's been awesome!

I doubt anyone but the owner(and I guess the manager if the owner doesn't run the store) could actually make a career of it. For everyone else, it would just be a job.

I can honestly say it has never occurred to me.

I can barely stand walking into my local games store (which is a GW) - the other closest games store does board games and jigsaws and a small (very small) line in some miniatures.

The idea of working in there day to day would have me deepthroating a rifle within three days (actually, just the idea of working in retail).
Of course, it also involves multiple homicides before this.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Maybe an FLGS but GW does not take summer workers (unless you are 18)

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

A job, yes. A career, no.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

Having worked in a "F"LGS for the past couple years (not as an owner, but as a peon), I can say it depends on being able to run the store your way AND it depends on the customers. I would love to have my own game store, but I wouldn't run it the same way as my local one is run. I would seek employee and customer input, not buy games or goodies that "look cool" without any input from other people.

Example one: giant inflatable D20 dice-a whopping 12 bucks per die, who is going to buy that? Pick up four or five and you've suddenly wasted 50-60 bucks. Example 2: running discounts only on games that have sat on the shelves for 4 years or on M:TG cards only. And employees here only get a 10% discount on GW material-many other game stores grant a 10% discount immediately.

Customers also don't appreciate being lied to: I've run into this multiple times where the manager just lies to his customers about not getting products in because he can't be bothered to help out one particular customer.

How about letting the only employee with warhammer knowledge in the store go? Employees in the store need to be understanding of multiple, if not all, games in the store. Having 4 people who understand Magic stay, but getting rid of anybody who understands warhammer and then wondering why every warhammer player quit going to the store...yeah, real "no-brainer" there.

To end my gripe about this, yes, I would like to have my own store: but I would never dream of treating my employees or customers the way the manager in my neck of the woods does. If anything, I have learned what NOT to do when I have my own.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I've seen the majority of regular customers in the local GW.

You couldn't make me work there at gunpoint.

If you live near your FLGS I would still go with no, work at toys are us. Im not very nerdy so my opinion is irrevelant and am only into a select few games, 40k mainly. If you work there be prepared to answer questions about each game you sell because customers will want to know. If you know nothing about half the games customers will probably complain and the boss will start testing you until you know whats what. If you wanted to work at GW or similar be prepared to deal with a lot of tweens and kiddies, backbreaking painting when not selling and judging games, etc. I like 40k the game, but I for one would my brains out if I had to be around it all day.
