In all seriousness there's enough sci-fi and fantasy saturated in 40k that you can focus completely on one aspect and not bother yourself with the other.

Tau and Necrons come to mind as almost purely sci fi

In 3/3.5e, Raven Guard command squads could take jump packs and equip special or even heavy weapons to go alongside them. The Blood Ravens in Dawn of War can also do this. It's not really much of a stretch to believe that other Chapters diverge from the Codex in this regard, even though it's not an option you can currently field in the game.

Like someone else already pointed out, Wolf Guard in PA can take jump packs. you'd be looking at around 430 points for a full squad of them with bolters, though.

Are there really no chapters that do this though? Seems like out of all the various doctrines and stratgems employed by the many, many SM chapters someone out there would do this.

Also as clarification when I say ranged weapon I mean Plasma Guns, Meltas, Bolters, and so on, not just a pistol.

I felt the same way originally. Having been in the military I always see something that makes more tactical sense on the gaming table.

The game has to bring along game balance with fluff. Fluff giving way to balance on average.

Fluff-wise, there HAS to be a reason that an assault marine doesn't have access to larger weapons. Maybe it takes more concentration to control?

Besides, if we had space marines jumping around with laser guns no one would play the Tau... er, wait...

Oh yeah, as to game balance, aren't the Crisis suits in use by the Tau their "Dreadnoughts"?

Also, flying gun platforms has been done to a great degree by the Tau already.

In The BA codex there's a picture of some assault marines, and one of them has a bolter.

I assume its done, but the codex probably calls for ASMs to use Chainswords and such

Anyone else think it's a bad idea for some of the most elite troops in the galaxy to have all their tactics written down in a book which really isn't hard to find a copy of?

You don't see ASM with ranged weapons because they haven't figured out how to file the spikes off this piece

Assault marines do have ranged weapons. They all have bolt pistols.

I meant things like bolters, meltaguns, and plasmas. And not like one or two guys I mean an entire ranged tac squad with jump packs. Also this all from a fluff perspective.

You guys could always try out Rogue Trader with Terminator Captains with Jump pack, assault cannon, and vortex grenades.

Game-wise, you can't move and assault with a Rapid Fire weapon. Logically, the second their boots hit the ground they're ideally running at the enemy. Bikes tend to be the preferred solution if you want to rapidly redeploy heavy weapons.

Ok let me clarify again for all you doodz. I meant from a fluff perspective why is it that we have yet to encounter a Chapter whose combat doctrine includes mobile ranged units like Crisis Suits. One would think with the myriad of Chapters out there we'd run into one with this kind of combat strategy. I'm not interested in conversions, old rules, or anything that has to do with tabletop and the rules.

Because, GW thinks anything that moves fast and shoots is automatically weird and must be Tau.
There isn't a reason for it.

Not in the rules you can't...
They probably don't have storm bolters because it is hard to use in CC.

Actually you might be on to something here...

I guess flying around with a gun isn't as heroic as flying around with a Space Fist or Space Hammer. It's more functional to have a gun, but I guess that's where Tau jump in.

Im surprised no one's mentioned BA Honor Guard squads. They can have up to 4 special weapons. Personally, I'm a fan of having a squad with 4 plasma guns jumping around the table. That's a huge amount of firepower.

I feel like the idea of something as heavy as a Space Marine in power armor being able to utilize a jump pack is ludicrous enough without the addition of heavy weapons; if you want a heavy bolter to move that fast, you need to mount it on a bike or an aircraft.

IMO they should all have a loadout of a grey hunter. Boltgun, boltpistol and a CCW. add a jump pack. you're too far away to use your pistol, odds are you're too far to assault. use the boltgun. you've jumped in within assault distance? use the pistol and charge. No "heavy" weapons, just weapons with a better range. assault weapons preferably to replace the boltgun. But i also believe most armies should get something like this.
