Very striking.

How did you paint your imperial aquilas? They look fantastic and create a nice contrast with the stark white and blue.

Thanks Medium - I went for a brownish bone colour for the aquilas and some of the skulls and detailing to differentiate them a bit - an alternative to using metallics, or black / white / grey I guess. They're base-coated in scorched brown, then work up through mixes of scorched brown and bleached bone - top highlights in a few places with a mix of bleached bone and white for bits you really want to stand out.

Hi folks. Got a chance to get a couple more done this weekend - terminator squad all done:

Tried a bit of a blended effect on the blade after reading a tutorial about the same on Dakka...

Here's the squad all together (still have to repaint the other 3 bases - brown is the new yellow - and add a bit of grass):

Notice the drilled gun barrels...

Later this week I'm going to try to do some nice-ish pictures of the whole force as it currently stands for a "state of the nation" type post for my blog, so will post here too if they're any good.

Nice shiny new Tac Squad underway for not much cash!:

and here's a sergeant for them:

Rough-ish paintjobs on all of these but they'll blend in OK I think

Thanks Lips - right back at ya, mate (I had a look at your Ultramarines blog - quality stuff - lightening effect on that relic blade works well).

I'm off work for a couple of weeks (yay!) recovering from an op (boo!) so it's time to sort out some little plastic men in greater numbers than usual - I need reinforcements if I'm to tackle my wife's orks properly (...that last sentence is not a euphemism... well not entirely...)

I'm glad you have posted those older marines (they're 2nd ed btw) I just had a whole tactical squad of them in a job lot from ebay and I was wondering if they would still look good painted. The answer is a resounding yes.

Fantastic army you've been building, I'm just sorry I didn't see it sooner. Great little trick with the shoulder pads too, may give it a go for my ultras.

I think I may follow your logic of building up from the AoBR box as a core. I'm at the point where I have too many models with none really painted, hopefully following a similar approach to this should help sort that out.

Nice one Lenny, glad you like them mate. The AoBR box is still a great deal for minis. They're not quite 'standard' in the way they're put together and you don't get as many weapon options etc (for instance, a multi melta on the dreadnought may not be your first choice, depending on what type of army you're going for, and the AoBR dread has slightly different arm fittings to a standard dread so it's a bit of a faff if you want swappable arms etc), but overall they make a fantastic core to really get you going, and you get a whole bunch of orks too - the 3 Deffkoptas and the terminator squad make the set worth it on its own, and you get a fun-size rulebook and some templates and the like too...

I'm just finishing the rest of the tac squad, so watch this space to see what a whole squad of them looks like ;-)

That's very... in a good way Like the really flat black on them.

Thanks Graven - the plan was that the plain, minimally highlighted black might help to make the flames and bones pop - plus it's much easier to do!

Great work doggles! I really like the paint scheme you are going for and the older marines that you just finished look great!

LotD look awesome as well! Not too fond of the flat black myself, I find it works better on a smaller area (a shoulderpad say)

Keep up the great work! One of my favorite two-tone marines I have ever seen!

Thanks chaps - glad you like them. Even more infantry now underway that I found in a charity shop - they look new-ish but not the latest I think. This getting to be a sizeable force now (hee hee, now I need more tanks again!)

Cain - duly noted about the black mate - They look great 'in the flesh' so to speak, but as far as black goes, well to be honest I've yet to try out different styles with this so I don't know what my favourite will be yet. I've got a Maugan Ra for my Eldar to do, so I might try something a bit more bright/3D on him (apropriate as even though he's all skulls and darkness, he's still a hoity-toity shiny-shiny Eldar smarty-pants after all). If the overall effect looks better than these LotD marines, then it should be straightforward to apply the same technique to them afterwards at some point :-)

Thanks Lips - back to work for me on Thursday I'm afraid, so I'm trying to get things done and dusted before then. Busy with another Tac squad at the minute so hopefully I can get those nailed together before I go back, but at the rate I'm working today, it will probably end up being the weekend.

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

These are looking good. If you want to add a bit more depth to the black mix regal blue and chaos black (about 1:2) and it will have a nice subtle highlight. How do you get that clean separation between the blue and white. It's perfectly straight and very impressive.
