I agree. Slightly bigger and smaller humans due to gravity differences is hardly wild and crazy sci-fi.

The real question is: Why are Ogryns stupid?

Actually, I think the more interesting sci-fi question is "how to they make them smarter?" when making bone 'eads.

I mean, it looks like they rip out one of their eyes and part of their brain and replace it with spinning gears and primitive electronics. How that makes them smarter is as mysterious as it is terrifying.

Your one-stop website for batreps, articles, and assorted goodies about the men of Folera: Foleran First Imperial Archives. Read Dakka's favorite narrative battle report series The Hand of the King. Also, check out my commission work, and my terrain.

Because they're so stupid that even those spinning gears make them smarter?

I think they just evolved from being in a very harsh environment does make some sense. Since I think in the dex they are about as smart as an 8 year old...Which when you think about it isnt that "dumb" When your that big and strong you dont need to "know" that much. A few basic tactics..where to find or make shelter and a how to get a pointy stick going or use a heavy rock.. Hell there are monkeys around here that can do all that and they are no where close to an 8 year old child.

Yes that's very true. My speculations are based off half-remembered Richard Dawkins books, I don't really know whether what you are saying is correct or not BluntmanDC. It certainly sounds plausible enough though, although I'm not sure whether that level of mutation (in effect a new species) would be plausible in that timeframe. Ratlings yes, Ogryns or beastmen no.

well i have no knowing of this halo...in depth...

and seeing how my still five year orl son can outmaneuver me when it comes to sweets or watching telly i dare an eightyearold that has been taught military training....they have no inhibitions whatsoever.... becuase they lack that knowledge of cause and action that gets created around moral and civilisation...they would use all weapons at hand to get to their aims...no remorse....thats coming in later years...

so a bright eight year old inteligent fighting machine of an ogryn would be pretty effective....

And as the Ogryn entry of Codex: Imperial Guard states, "A small mind is easily filled with faith".

Also, there's no guarantee that Imperial hypotheses as to the origin of Ogryns are correct. Perhaps the high-gravity hypothesis is simply the widely accepted story and in truth they were brought about by prison-world experimentation or similar?

Well the human brain uses 25% of the body's blood and oxygen so I guess when you're 12 feet tall and weight half a ton you can't dedicate that much biological resources to the 'ole grey matter.

Ah, so perhaps biological resources were reallocated rather than expanded(as is the case with Space Marines and their secondary hearts) to allow for greater strength/mass and the brain suffered as a result?

That's my explanation, but its better than anything that GW has given us. Basically, they just wanted some space-ogres and generally the archetype isn't the brightest.

Imperial lack of knowledge can be used by more intelligent consumers of Games Workshop IP to explain away a lot of plotholes.
