They are ashamed to have befouled their prestine power armour with dirty, filthy mud..
Anyhow, I like them.. they look like they've come straight out of combat on some muddy, rainy battlefield, so I say;

Makes them more intimidating that way. They quite literally look down on their foes.

I love these, they have a really 'gritty' and realistic look as opposed to the quasi comic-book look of vanilla marines.

Awesome stuff Fafnir. Sorry about the rules nut, that's a burden I don't wish on any modeler.
You used resin bases for these guys, right? Which ones were they?

I've been lurking around sneaking a peek here and there on your Gallowsmen in your gallery and I have to say, awesome job Very inspirational. I myself have a true scale project in full swing and I love what you've done with yours. I can't beleive someone actually complained about base sizes. It seems there's always someone who has to complain and be the stubborn rules monger. I'm investing in the smaller display bases so I can try to avoid something like that. Glad you at least won best painted!

I tend to be a bit of a rules nut myself, but in my case, the rulebook does allow larger scenic bases if it doesn't present a problem to either player (page 3). It's just that if someone complained about it, I'd end up loosing more points in the tourney (and it looked like a few people were complaining about it). So I had to run them as Loganwing (which was actually more competetive than the list I was running originally).
I won't be entering the army in any more tournaments to avoid situations like this.

Mostly Uncle Mike's resin bases. Met the guy in Calgary a few times, cool guy. He also has an awesome Cthulhu model that anyone looking for a greater daemon should definetly check out.

Loving the true scale marines! Can't wait to play my orks against em at the 'box one of these sundays.
This the Mike that plays 'Nids and DE? Or the one that works at sentry box? I might have to talk to him about getting some bases myself.

The one that works at Sentry Box. He also produces his own miniature game called " Strange Aeons," which sounds very interesting (based on Lovecraftian lore), but I've never gotten a chance to try it.
Seriously though, I've seen this badboy in real life, and it's fething AMAZING:

Your truescale stuff is simply amazing, really like the gritty feel and the personality each marine gives as well, nicely done!
