Humanity is nothing without faith.
Faith raises us above the soulless and the damned. It is the soul's fuel, and the driving force
behind millennia of mankind's survival. We are hollow without it. Existence is cold and arbitrary
in a godless galaxy- faith shapes us, raises us above all other life, defines us as perfect in our sentience"

The First Heretic, pg 184

Hey y'all, in order to celebrate my 100th post on DakkaDakka, I have officially decided to start both my first major army and a blog thereof. I picked the Word Bearers because they were my first; the first 40k army I ever attempted, the first one I truly loved(eew) and the first I ever won with(which I stupidly sold except for one model -_-). I remember being awestruck by the majesty of Eliphas the Inheritor's Chaotic Legions in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, and my love of the Legion was only rekindled further by the release of The First Heretic(by my favorite Black Library author). I love the fervor and sheer brute force of the Legion, how they choose to let their faith protect them as they surge forward and overwhelm their enemies. The title of the project is slightly misleading, they are actually centered historically on the Battle of Calth, where they took on their Ultrasmurf contemporaries, but the initial army will be focused around the Crimson Armored Gal Vorbak, Lorgar's most favored warriors, who eventually became the first possessed.

On the hobby front, due to a general dislike of the current GW plastics and the gorilla-esque proportions, the entire army will be done with Chaos Warrior legs, a la Doghouse's gothic pattern Night Lords.

Sadly, I only have 3 marines half built right now, and I won't have any more done until Tuesday, so I will leave you with a picture of the first completed member of the army:

That's right! Chessex whipped me up some custom dice for the project, and I am psyched to get them! All I need to do now is find enough goats to sacrifice to make sure they roll well...

I look forward to getting everyone's feedback on the first real army I have ever attempted!

That dice is sweet. If thats the 'one', then only use it for leadership rolls, cos you really want that side to come face up.

Haha, it is the one. At least I'll feel good about all the armor saves I'll be failing.

Allrighty folks, I feel like my first post was a bit lackluster, so I'm slinging in a quick picture I took of the first model for the army. I converted up this model for a horribly cancelled Sons of Horus project, and Dakka's own Auxellion used it as a demonstration model for my paintscheme. The model is still kinda WIP, and even though he painted the armour, I'm going to finish up the finer details and add another layer to it. This was just to demonstrate how to get a really nice crimson colour, and it doesn't take very long to do, so Updates galore! And I know the trim is supposed to be silver, but he painted it white, and I'm torn between the two effects.

This is(and will remain) the ONLY model I will ever have someone paint for me, and that was only for demonstration of technique. I am in an informal painting contest with some of my friends, and I want to refine my technique to the point where I can really blow them out of the water.

Sorry about the crummy shot, I had to use my cell phone camera. With any luck, I'll have picked up a lightbox by the end of the week and gotten my proper camera sorted out

I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS!

I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS! I DID NOT PAINT THIS!

Like I said, if all goes well, I should have pictures of the WIP squad one by tomorrow afternoon. I'm gonna try to stay on an "update a day" schedule, with as many pix as I can spare.

Your friend did a good job. Is the weapon a power maul?

Can't really tell much detail, but you could do a silver over the white, I am sure that would work. Coloured eye lenses too.

What will he have in his right hand (if anything)?

Looks good.

Yeah, Steve is amazing, but the technique is simple enough where I can duplicate it. He's like our local GW's Yoda, just going around, making people's stuff awesome and easy to paint.

Here's his tyranid army for more of his stuff
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Auxellion%27s_Orion_Effect_%28Tyranid_Army%29

He's rocking the Power Maul from the Chaos Terminator sprue, and he was intended to be a proxy TH/SS terminator, now I think I'll finagle him as a Chaos Sorceror. I'm definitely making the eye lenses green on the finished marines, but the Iron Warriors Upgrade helmets dont have much definition in that area. I'll have better pictures tomorrow.

@Yggdrasil: Thanks man, but I didn't paint the terminator, that was all Auxellion. I'll have my own stuff up by friday.

@BishopGore: I "borrowed" this technique from Doghouse. I hope it helps.

Working on assembling the first squad of Word Bearers right now, I thought Id snap a few pictures while I worked and give you an idea of what I'm shooting for. I also reshot the Terminator so you could marvel at Steves amazing painting.

The First Squad(yaaay) The center model is an unfinished counts-as Chaplain for one of my lists

A side view of the Counts-As-Chaplain, he is awaiting a Dark Angels mace for his crozius and a bolt pistol

Sorry about the blurs. Here is a side view of an Astartes. This guy will eventually become a meltagunner.

I also felt I owed you guys a better picture of Auxellions handiwork

@Manoknok: Here's a better picture of that mace

And from the rear. In my defense, I DID paint the buttflap and the right leg.

More pictures of the first squad will be coming either tonight or early tomorrow. Thanks for looking!

EDIT: I know there are mold lines and sprue crud. I'm taking my time clearing it off now

Is this a chaos army, I didn't assume it would be because of the pre-heresy tag. Pre-heresy Bearers are supposed to be dark grey I thought. Otherwise I do really like the painted model.

Can it be? Party liquor rain!?

And all will be blessed Darkness.

Not any more chaos than the Word Bearers ususally were.

According to The First Heretic, there was a unit of 38 Astartes in the 4th Chapter known as the Gal Vorbak who wore the now recognizable Red Armor. This is the core of my force and the models I will paint first. The Terminator is not "officially" in the army. Auxellion just painted it to show me how to paint the red.

Also, according to Garro: Oath of Moment, by the time of the Battle of Calth, the Legion had gone fully red armored.

As such, when I run my Gal Vorbak list, I will have all vehicles painted grey to represent the fact that this is before the heresy per-se. The army as a whole is centered more on the late Crusade, heresy era. After the Emperor rebuked the Legion for their piety. So there will be a few, subtle chaotic influences.

Yeah, I saw the signs on the pic lol (IDIDNTPAINTTHISIDIDNTPAINTTHIS), I so assumed you were the modeller!!

So that's why I said good job...

I have just bought Garro : Oath of Moment, so I'm going to listen to it today!!! The fluff you mentioned has inspired me!!

Thanks for the compliment though. Im a huge fan of your stuff. And Oath of Moment is pretty awesome, except for the fact that Malcador is apparently Emperor Palpatines nasally congested twin. Although, now that I think about it, that really more of a plus. Hope you enjoy it too!

Where did you get those legs from that you used on your counts as chaplain and his friends? Hard to tell, but they seem much bigger than the standard Space Marine legs.

Consider Chaos Warrior legs idea "borrowed"

Are they big enough alone to make a marine truescale, or will they need some modification?

@BishopGore: They put them about a head taller than a tactical marine and the same height as a terminator or assault marine, I've added a pic below of the two next to each other. And I can't wait to see the Mantis Warriors in bigger shoes The only modification is GSing the gap between belt and torso

@Fafnir: Thank you! Although looking at your truescale log, it looks like it'll be a pretty one-sided competition Amazing work dude.

@SilverMk2: Yeah, they look awesome, except when youve got about a dozen all in a row and it looks like a Chaotic Dance Troupe. I love the look though, and I love the feeling of "weight" and bulk that it gives to the Marines. I feel like it shows the relentless plodding regimented march of the Marines and makes them look a lot more serious

And now a more somber note. It is with great sorrow that I report the death of blurry pictures for this blog. Blurry pictures had been a staple of the project since the very beginning, obscuring detail and creating eyestrain worldwide. He passed away suddenly this morning, and was discovered with a camera that I learned how to use the macro on. He is survived by the first pictures in my gallery.

And now...PIX!

First up, the first part of Preacher-Squad Dagotal

A better view of the sergeant. He still needs shoulder pads but I love the pose. I'll probably paint this bad boy up for my friendly painting contest.

And a side view of the sergeant, and the better job I need to do of filing off the aquila on the fist

The counts-as Chaplain for when I want to use a Blood Angels list(to be added later)

And a size comparison(with the first model I ever painted back in 2005)

That's all for now kiddies. Weather pending, I'll have the rest of the squad built and primed by tomorrow night and painted by monday.

Wow, those models are great, but... the chaplain (especially the head) screams way too much 'CHAAAAAOOOOSSSS!!!' to me, don't you think?

[edit : also, I didn't know the 'center' command for pics, that's a nice thing!!!]

Oath of moment was great! I wonder if the rest of the audiobook series will follow the same format, him gathering marines for whatever is planned.

I'm really digging these models, are the chaos warrior legs really that much bigger, or is cause the legs are straighter? Nice use of the Iron Warrior kits btw ;P
