What do you call someone (or something) that suffers the horrors of the universe with you, who prays with you, eats with you, trains with you, dies with you, gives you advice, takes your advice, looks out for you, make fun of you, let you make fun of him, fights beside you, is willing to die for you (and the Emperor), lives more than centuries with you and suffers with you?
Brother.
This. It's the best way to describe their bond.

So this would be the description of the bond between battle-bros equal in rank.
But how do they view the Chapter Master? And the libbies? And the scouts? And what about the chapter serfs who were denied the right to be called "brothers". And how would they even view the populations they rule and protect (if they are not fleet-based)?

I always imagined dreadnoughts being viewed like elders, depending on the chapter. Very old with alot of experience and wisdom.

The sisters of battle are still incredibly masculine. If you took away the boobs and the name, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The oversized phallic imagery doesn't help either.
In the case of Eldar, their weapons could be considered just as phallic, in some cases even moreso (dark reapers... wow).
Additionally, although being marginal improvements compared to Space Marines, they're not nearly as marketed.

Damn, this entire forum is being overrun by slaaneshi cultists!
Where is the Inquisition when we need it the most?!?
I would say that eldars seem to have the less "masculine virility" connotations in this sci-fi universe. Their overall appearance is more subtle, almost feminine. (I'm gonna get quartered by all eldar players for this line...)
Back on topic, I wonder if SoB share the same bond between them than SM. Do they view their canonness as a mother?

The whole image of SMs -- super tall, hyper muscley, their body image magnified farther by power armour -- is an adolescent dream of exaggerated manly manliness and male power.
The sub-text is so bleeding obvious it hardly counts as sub-text.

Usually it's phallic when it gets on the ridiculous side, like the giant swords in final fantasy and other games, giant guns and swords are compensation. You know what they say, the bigger the gun, the smaller the pistol.

First, I'd like to say, WOW. Didn't expect this thread to take off so quickly. Secondly, it's going off topic to the extreme. It is very appearant that many of you didn't properly understand my meaning when I used the term 'Bromance'. It has nothing to do with homosexual relationships. I'm going off of the first two definitions listed here http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bromance So please forgive me if I unintentionally brought insult with the ambiguousness of my phrasing.
As for all the phallic references, they're seen in almost anything. (no more crimson fisting!)
EmilCrane wrote:I was specifically talking about the Black templars, and in their codex it doesn't say the neophytes do the work of serfs
I don't know what things are like where you are from, but if I'm waiting on someone at banquets, I'd be their serf. Serfs in the other chapters also handle this duty. And IIRC, doesn't they're codex say they have to carry the gear/armor for who they are mentoring with and are responsible for cleaning/upkeep of said equipment?

I haven't read his works, but the interpretation people give to me seems somewhat suspect.
Mr Nobody wrote:Usually it's phallic when it gets on the ridiculous side, like the giant swords in final fantasy and other games, giant guns and swords are compensation. You know what they say, the bigger the gun, the smaller the pistol.
There's no real suggestion of such a thing though. It's just something people say. Large swords were used in real life, albeit they were unlikely to be of the same size as some in fantasy games (like in Final Fantasy), and oversized swords are much more likely to be due to the 'rule of cool' than any phallic symbolism.
Son of Dorn wrote:It is very appearant that many of you didn't properly understand my meaning when I used the term 'Bromance'. It has nothing to do with homosexual relationships.
What do you expect when you use a word that was very recently made up (and a clumsy amalgamation of two already existing words as well)? Yes, Space Marines likely have that sort of relation. It's clear that they love each other at least as much as any real life military unit. They live, fight and die together, and view each other as brothers (as pointed out).
As for all the phallic references, they're seen in almost anything. (no more crimson fisting!)
Only if you choose to see them. I've been told that a scene in Bram Stokers Dracula when a vampire is stabbed through the heart with a stake is phallic. Personally, I'd never have come close to thinking such a thing.

Actually, the term 'bromance' is popular slang where I live and amoungst my friends (as we're all dorks that way) and I didn't really think about it being a relatively new term when I used it.
As for the phallic issue, I think it comes more down to that particular shape being the most effecient for the purpose of thrusting. Whether it's a phallically shaped ship thrusting through atmostphere to get to outer space, a phallically shaped sworth thrusting forward to pierce armor and kill an enemy, or a phallically shaped weapon thrusting a projectile outwards do kill/maim/destroy someone. We see it everywhere because no other shape is as effecienct for conveying kinetic energy to a specific point. Seeking it all out is reading too deeply into it, IMHO.

You could have said so earlier. In this universe, it is only Grimdark. If you don't state what you want, the administratum would give you what you do NOT want. Which is probably going to kill you. What if I was an inquisitor? You would be dragged off, tortured and destroyed.

You could have said so earlier. In this universe, it is only Grimdark. If you don't state what you want, the administratum would give you what you do NOT want. Which is probably going to kill you. What if I was an inquisitor? You would be dragged off, tortured and destroyed.
Or made into a member of your retinue for my 'inquisitive' natue?

I don't know what things are like where you are from, but if I'm waiting on someone at banquets, I'd be their serf. Serfs in the other chapters also handle this duty. And IIRC, doesn't they're codex say they have to carry the gear/armor for who they are mentoring with and are responsible for cleaning/upkeep of said equipment? I very much agree with S0D. If any you have read the Ranger's Apprentice books, this is what I think it'd be like. Halt was a mentor to his apprentice, Will, and loved him dearly, but he treated him a bit roughly, and made him do a crap-load of work for him. Actually, the term 'bromance' is popular slang where I live and amoungst my friends (as we're all dorks that way) and I didn't really think about it being a relatively new term when I used it.
It is the same. I have a number of different circles of friends, and in all of them, there are the group of guys who hug each other hello and goodbye, give each other advice and talk about pretty deep stuff, and, yes, every so often, give their mates an encouraging pat on the backside. I agree with OP on the topic though. To me, it seems like this - - Primarchs are the grandfathers - Chapter Masters are the big daddy's - Dreads are the wise old uncles. - Libbys and Tech Priests are the weird older brothers that smoke weed - Chaplains are the really cool older brothers, who everyone loves. - Normal Marines are the middle children - Scouts are the youngest, so picked on a bit, by forced servitude.
