Was discussing the relationships between battle brothers with some friends. After some debate we decided it was a bromance. Anyone else have thoughts on the matter?

I imagine it would sort of be like a high school football team, lots of swatting each other on the butt and surreptitious peeking in the showers to see how your "equipment" measured up with the other manly men.

They are brothers and the affection they have for eachother is the same as one has for their siblings. Chapter masters and dreadnoughts may be viewed more as a father figure, while other high ranking space marines are like older brothers. Scouts would be viewed the same way one views their little brother.

Except we see fear/revulsion directed at Techmarines and Librians.
Black Templar treat neophytes (scouts) as personal servants.

By what I've seen, Scouts are treated as partial outsiders seeking to prove themselves worthy to become full-fledged Battle Brothers.

Exactly. I guess it depends on the culture of the chapter.
Some chapters with a more "primitive" or archaic culture might place hierarchy before fraternity. Hence, neophytes would be disregarded by battle brothers, who are in turn being despised by the proud veterans, etc.

Meh, sounds like any other military unit.
In other words:
Old Guy: "Hey new guy, take this trash bag and get me an exhaust sample from the generator."
New Guy: "Okay, how do I do that?"
Old Guy: "Take the trash bag and hold it over the exhaust pipe while it is running, then take the bag to the motor sergeant."
The New Guy then runs off to do it, and then during all of the laughter from everyone else, goes to the Motor Sergeant, who tells him he needs some Flight Line, and some Blinker Fluid.

It's not like that....
Scouts are the future of the Chapter and for that they are respected. And the older Marines are teaching them well, maybe sometimes they are pushing them over the limits.
But I have never heard of Space Marines abusing their scouts, they are just to disciplined and religious to do that.
Example is Scout sergeant Cyrus from DoW II. I never saw Other sergeants abuse him or their scouts.

No, they don't, they train them and the initiates treat this as a solemn duty. Its a peer mentor relationship. They're not pampered, but they're not treated as servants, no where in the codex does it say this.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

At any rate, as stated, the Space Marines relationship with one another is generally a strong family-like bond, however, there are variations from chapter to chapter.

I think more of the bond of gladiators in ancient Rome. A Lanister would own a group and they would constantly try to out-do their "brothers" in the Arena. Seems pertinent to the bond between Space Marines with either duty, the Imperium, their chapter, or the Emperor as their Lanister.

I wouldn't expect a Space Marines recruiting document to mention the abuse of new members as a prominent feature of chapter life.
There are about 1,000 chapters with a highly variable level of adherence to the strict principles of the Vanilla codex. It wouldn't surprise me if a few chapters were a bit more unorthodox in the treatment of different levels.
Spartans had a pretty crappy time before they got to full Spartiate level. But in their system, any boy born in Sparta was in the system as soon as he could walk, no choice.
I don't imagine GW would ever publish material covering physical, mental or sexual abuse of initiates.

I've never read any GW novels, and never intend to.
However the codex is the starting point really.
The BA codex may well not say anything about the initiates doing the duty of serfs.
The young Spartans didn't have to do the duty of serfs (helots) either. There was a bunch of other stuff they had to do which would certainly be considered abuse in modern times.
Why not the BA?
