...Perhaps then I'll plunk down my money and go see it.

The threat China poses is economic, which ostensibly provides casting China in the role of villain allegorically.

But trade relations is possibly one of the reasons why China has been dropped from playing the bad guy.

I think someone alluded to this above but can't find the post.

Oh for the 50's when men were men, and Reds under the Beds were aliens. Life must have been so much simpler.

Yeah, the irony is that the close business relations between China and the US is why this film was cancelled... and those close business relations are one very good reason why this war would never happen in the first place.

Oh for the 50's when men were men, and Reds under the Beds were aliens. Life must have been so much simpler.

Well, it was easier to write semi-plausible modern day war movies.

Heh, I remember when the Russia opened up to the world and moved past communism, and here we were looking at this (mostly) peaceful revolution, the end of a terrible government and the freeing of millions of people, and people were saying how the spy novel business was going to struggle now. It was then I realised that people will complain about any damn thing rather than be happy about world events.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Yeah, the deliberate diversity makes it looks very Saturday Morning Disney, doesn't it?

I can't help but wonder if those kids will be fighting at the start of the movie, but through killing North Koreans they might learn the value of looking past race and seeing the person inside.

Am I the only one who actually liked the original Red Dawn? I mean, it was a bit out there, but I actually enjoyed the story it told. I really did. By not focusing so much on the 'how' it just let the audience fill in the blanks...it may not be the greatest movie of all tiem, but I definitely enjoyed it. Of course, let it be said that my favourite video game of all time is Red Alert 2, so perhaps I'll be a bit biased, and jaded towards ridiculousness....

I was always worried about them remaking the movie....Chinese as the replacements seemed like it'd be decent, but North Korea? Movie, you better have a damn fine explanation for how the hell they pulled that off. I mean...at least the original had the excuse of the film makers not knowing the true details of Soviet military strength...but North Korea? =Shakes Head= Goodbye suspension of disbelief...

It was one of my favourite movie as a kid. I still kind of love it, but only in a way that accepts how stupid the whole thing is. That's not to say I only like it in an ironic sense, because at times they actually show how ugly and hard it is to be part of a partisan resistance - afterall it ends with a failed raid on a Russian airbase, with a rebel leader dying alone with his just shot out. There's a lot of 80s cheesy action moments in there as well.

So I just kind of watch the crap bits and laugh, and watch the good bits seriously, and kind of accept that it was a failed, but surprisingly ambitious effort to make a good war movie out of an incredibly stupid premise.

I watch the original, animated Transformers movie in the same way.

If an economic collapse cripples the logistical supply chain our military is very dependent upon, its combat effectiveness drops substantially. The north Koreans actually have an immense military machine, their standing special forces troops number nearly 1 million. Yes, Million. Their reservists are believed to exceed 9 million. This means the DPRK has nearly 5% of their population as active military, and 45% as ready reserves. This is why no one wants to start a war with them

Our military numbers about 1.5 million active service, and about 750-800 thousand reservists. Difference being the majority of the personnel are support and not combat troops.

And Im sure for a movie this awesome- Kim Jong Il, goes back in time- and kidnaps Tesla and Einstein, Marconi and Edison, and makes them build a giant teleporter that is powered by starving children pedalling bicycles. Then he just deep strikes his angry troops right on top of us. And only when the troops hear music of a whiny under aged pop star on TV for the first time- they become enamored with our culture and lose the will to fight....

I forsee this film being a straight to DVD release for $9.99 as it has all the hallmarks of turd-dom.

I hereby prophesize that this film will be a freebie when ordering pizza within 4 months of it's Walmart debut.

After what I've read here, I'd rather go pay to see Turkish Star Wars in the theatre than this remake.

This I would pay to watch
It sounds much more more plausible than the film.
Fair enough there is suspension of disbelieve, but Red Dawn seems to require brain dead.

Employing someone as a soldier doesn't make them effective as one, nor does having someone in the reserves do anything if you lack the resources to give them any training or supplies.

And the reason the North Korean has so many troops in front line operations and not in support roles is because they have very little gear for their forces. They still operate WWII vintage trucks, and much of the rest comes from Chinese and Russian support, almost all of which dried up two decades ago.

I can see how a US that was suffering an economic collapse might suddenly find it's logistics collapsing to the point where it couldn't sustain an invasion of North Korea, but we're talking about North Korea invading the US. How are they going to get there, 100,000 men per midget sub?

The big thing is, I guess, is that with either China or Russia invading, I can suspend disbelief enough to enjoy the movie. It's just like CoD6, World in Conflict, Red Alert 2 and all the other Cold War Goes Hot fiction. Does the invasion, or the logisitcs behind the invasion make sense? Probably not...however, in a certain way, it's believable enough that you can ignore those minor details, or justify them to yourself in order to answer them. It's believable enough to think that the Soviet pulled something off where they smashed the Pacific or Atlantic Fleets. You can come up with a scenario where China suceeds in landing troops on the US mainland. However, you just can't suspend disbelief enough for North Korea...I mean, at least I can't....

The Great State of Texas

The theory for the original Red Dawn was that they invaded through Alaska, AFTER they nuked the US. At the time the Cold War was still very much on, and it was a proxy for the Evil Soviet Empire.

The problem with the NK variant is that, as noted, their population is miniscule and their military machine is nothing to the USA, even just at the reserves level. They don't have squat and they are not getting squat anytime soon. Outside of a surprise invasion of South Korea NK would get its ass kicked even by...France.
I doubt we'll even notice the trailers at this point. When your first week attendance numbers are likely on par with the average high school class size, you should seriously just consider that whole direct to video thing.
