SISSIES! ALL OF YOU! Get out there and play dammit! No Necrons?! Use twigs. Dont have the cash? Then get some elmers and glue some damn Q-tips together and get your kill on! I once played a game in my garage in the middle of a blizzard. It was -10 outside when we played. I had a space heater (that didnt heat anything but my energy bill) and a my grill with a fire going on it. It was fething COLD! Im talking, we would have to heat out hands up after rolling the dice, because they were literally colder then icecubes.

All it takes is dedication. Jeez, ya damn sissypanzies!

What if what you are missing is other players?

I have actually never played a game of 40k in my life. I just bought up models and painted and converted them, and read all the books. I haven't actually done anything 40k related in over a year, however. No time and less money have conspired against me.

Now that I think about though, I'm generally happier now that I don't spend every minute of my free time cooped up in my room painting toy soldiers. Go figure!

However, I do get nostalgic when my gaze falls upon the mountains of converted, yet unpainted orks sitting atop my dresser. . . . perhaps someday.

Or you could just play with yourself to discover new tactics that you wouldn't normally think of. Put yourself into positions you wouldn't normally like to be in and try to get out of them.

hmm ive tried that before, but theres only so many new things i can think of, and since i always know what im going to do...it becomes a tad frustrating unfortunately.
Otherwise, it does work for a while

Go to youtube and see if anyone else has posted a video of themselves playing with themself or playing with a friend. It'll at least give you an idea of what kind of situations you can set up.

To be honest, I probably talk on dakka more than I talk to real people... But that's a given, I suppose.

I think if my gaming group every went away, I'd be in the same boat as you guys.... Maybe. I've gotten quite good at playing games by myself, and I have more than enough models to support such a lonely hobby

Yes. This. A thousand times this.

Put your new army at a disadvantage, put your new army up against an army designed to wreck it, play games with a gak load of cover. Anything you want to do, it's cool. I love playing by myself

Number one rule though... Play your hardest. Don't pull any punches

it is looking like this is the only way to go *sigh*
i did try and get my sister into the game again recently but she was having none of it and has now started at uni so no luck there either.
im just not very good at seeing what other people would do in any given situation (although weirdly i can do it when im actually playing against someone else :S)

Just..... Block out your army entirely when you play the other side. Don't see it as, "Oh, I might need that later", just think of it as something entirely different; as a target. You know what I mean?

I definitely play against other players; probably once every couple weeks, but playing against myself is great fun, especially when I want to test some new ideas out.

The only problem I encounter is forgetting what rules are, and not having another person to correct me (Like, for instance, I couldn't remember if I could leave combat with a dreadnought if I have nothing to pen it with)

Yup

Doesn't help that I'm a city boy and won't engage in the forms of entertainment common around here. Which would include Hunting, Driving, and Drinking. Most of the time, all three of those together.

Of course I do, but I'm 3000 miles from them out in the Alaskan bush for a couple months. The past times here don't include mini wargaming. Getting stuff shipped here is problematic as well.

Playing with yourself is the better alternative than not playing at all. Its a win-win situation too, if you lose you learn something new if you win you feel good about yourself.

Other than that the guy who runs the 40k events at my local store plays online with his friend in Utah. They set up a grid on the floor and take pictures of the positions, its time consuming and tedious but its a game nonetheless.

Guess i'm the same, realm of battle board being >£100. Me and my friend usually either play on the floor with bits of terrain/'book' hills/old toys or go down to the FLGS and play there.

I started trying to play about 6 years ago. I bought some minis for me and my son. We had a few games together to try to get the rules down but between available time and cost of building/painting I never actually played anyone else. Between then and now I’ve had to drop out for months or years at a time but I still come back, although all I really like to do now is conversions. For awhile there I was hanging out at the local GW and just working on minis but then they moved the store to smaller location and its way too cramped. I’d still like to try a game but I don’t really have a complete army. That pesky “free time” thing is still a big issue too.
Its kinda sad really, now I just try converting minis, get bummed over how it turns out, and toss ‘em in a box never to be seen again.

Disclaimer: This thread may or may not be a stalking horse for a purge of all users who don't actually play or paint wargaming models.

On a more serious note, I agree with King Cracker. Where there's a will, there's a way. We've had at least two different threads of guys who are playing and painting while on active duty in war zones. The rest of you guys should try harder.
