Yes I believe it referred to someone who had the strength of will to overthrow their demonic possession, and once you can do that it makes you immune to the predations of other daemons seeking possession in the future. There is a wonderful extract in the Inquisition Wars books of the chap named above who manages to do it, but the actual amount of people who have such strength is infinitesimal.

With this story I would :

1) Suggest reading the 'Blood Gorgons' by Henry Zhou

2) Make sure you get the difference between renegade and chaos, and which chaos god is their patron.

3) Alter your story slightly so that it is only the younger marines and newer recruits (with perhaps one or two veterans that were always secretly loyal) that escape the grip of chaos and war against their superiors. This fits in perfectly wih your idea of them trying to return to their old ideals and ensure their treachery is forgotten through atonement (even if the Imperium still rejects them).

4) Undersand that the chapter's servitude to chaos cannot have been too long, perhaps a few decades to a century. Anything further and they will be utterly caught up.

5) I don't know about the presence of the Emperor doing anything, seeing as the Horus Heresy occurred and all.

Instead of Black Templars, which are among the least tolerant of a faction not known for tolerence, how about Relictors? The Relictors use chaos artifacts (Like the Grey Knights), are curious about chaos, and all about using the power of chaos against itself. If any marines would be willing to ally with former renegades it would be them.

From a modeling standpoint, it would be cool to involve a high amount of bionics where mutations where cut away and replaced with steel. It'd also be fun to paint up the whole army in original colors of the legions they're from. The Death Guard and Thousand Sons are far too gone physicaly to turn back, but that still leaves 7 other legions.

Edit: Here's the Relictors. They mesh perfectly with your idea. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Relictors
