Yes that is! I will give you another one. The boat sinks at the end after it hits the iceberg.

I think we watched different versions of Empire Strikes Back...

To keep the discussion on topic, I think Serenity, for all it's flaws, was a nice way to complement an excellent series and answer a few loose questions (and allow Summer/River (neither of those are names...) to let her hair down a bit).

To say it's better than Empire is baffling. Even with the StarWars generation being replaced I don't see how anyone could watch both films and decide for Serenity other than rabid fanbism.

I'm surprised it's as even as it is, honestly. 6,569 for Empire, 6,470 for Serenity.

I like them both. Serenity is great for having a cowboy movie setting in space. It has a great opening sequence which leaves those who don't know how it begins wanting more. I have yet to see someone not intrigued by Serenities opening hook. It bogs down in the middle and then goes all 'Buffy' on us at the end.

Let's remember Empire Strikes Back is the only one of the 6 Lucas didn't direct. That alone makes it a classic for most. It does have some great iconic scenes such as the Hoth battle and the lightsaber duel between Father and Son.

This is David vs. Goliath and Goliath just has to much in the tank to go down.

Didn't Empire Strikes Back have the Hoth battle scene? I'm sorry, it wins just for having that.

He didn't direct Return of the Jedi, Richard Marquand did.

I thought it was the only one of the six that he didn't write the script for.

Lucas directed neither ESB nor RotJ. He was a collaborator on the script for RotJ, he wasn't even that on ESB, instead just getting the "story by" credit.

Leigh Brackett was the big change from ESB to RotK, she died before work began on the script for RotJ. She was one of the writers for ESB, along with Lawrence Kasdan who also wrote RotJ with Lucas, and by most reports was responsible for many of the best lines and scenes in the film. I've been told she was also responsible for creating the structure the films hangs off so well, by focusing on the episodic nature of the old serials, where each escape just lands the heroes in another dangerous situation.

Which just goes to show how ridiculous fanboys, and therefore internet voting, really is.

I mean, honestly, you're welcome to love Serenity as much as you want. If it doesn't bother you that the whole second half of the movie looks and feels like a below average episode of the TV show then fine.

But ESB is one of the most iconic, best known and just damn important films of all time. Meanwhile most of the world has forgotten Serenity ever existed.

I'm ...perplexed..

How exactly is Serenity (which I watched once and instantly forgot) even in the running against Empire?...

Surely Blade Runner or Alien(s) Vs Empire would make more sense for "Best" Sci-fi...

They would, but I love the battle scenes for both of them the most so I base my likes off of that.

I enjoyed Serenity quite a bit to be honest, but Empire wins flat out. Serenity was a decent movie, but Empire is a great, great movie. Empire was the high point of the Star Wars movies, in all honesty/.

People are stupid. More so in large groups and on the internet. Not surprised that we're seeing bad taste here.

On IMDB

Serenity - 7.9
TESB - 8.8

Only Sci Fi film above TESB on IMDB is Inception...

So one film has a single season of a show to it's credit, the other spawned one of the largest entertainment franchises in history, and possibly one of the most recognized movie quotes ever. I wonder which is more influential?

This is probably because people have lost their faith in the Star Wars universe. I know I have.

Honestly with what they have did with the Clones Wars, I have gotten to the point that I can't stand any of it.

Don't get me wrong, I voted for ESB. But kids these days, they don't care for the OT, and the Clone Wars and PT do not hold up to it. No wonder there is hardly any respect.

Yeah, they've kind of dumbed down Star Wars over the years. Though I have to admit, I did enjoy Return of the Sith quite a bit, and some of the battle scenes in Attack of the Clones were pretty awesome too. Not to mention seeing Yoda get to fight for the first time! I did enjoy the FIRST Clone Wars series (the short 5 minute episode one that ran on Cartoon Network), but the latest ones? Well, I dind't even watch that movie, and I don't watch the TV Show...but from what I hear, I guess it's a decent TV show, ubt not up to ESB calibre.

I know it's dumb and reactionary, but this has made me actually dislike serenity a bit more, just through association with that sort of rabid, taste impaired fanboy.

You have to take into account the kind of people that would vote on this sort of thing as well. It isn't as if it is serious survey with a well rounded sample group. It will be mostly a combination of fanboys and casual genre fans. I am a cinema buff and never vote in this kind of thing and still don't. I don't even rate things on IMDB becuase I find it ridiculous. The hard data available there is what is invaluable.

I don't think anyone was predicting the outcome of the poll. More that we were talking about which one is clearly the better film, which has been seen by vastly more people, had a much greater impact on culture, and therefore should clearly win the poll.

It's entirely possible that the very small number of very rabid Firefly fans will manage to win that survey for their side. Which only makes the whole thing more ridiculous, not less.

Good point. Star Wars has gotten old and bloated, and traded on how good it was for a long time. But just like Mick Jagger, just because he's old and creepy now doesn't mean we should forget how great the Rolling Stones were.

So I guess if you took a poll now between Mick Jagger and Justin Bieber, well people might look at what Jagger is like now, and maybe be swayed to vote for Bieber. The result would be sad, but whatever.

Thing is, Serenity isn't like Bieber. Because people actually go to Justin Bieber concerts. People will remember Justin Bieber for decades. No-one went to see Serenity, hardly anyone will remember it. It's more like Serenity is Alien Ant Farm, because their cover of Smooth Criminal was great and all, and maybe for just a little while there we thought it could have been expanded into something really wonderful, but nothing really came of it.

So, sure, maybe Mick Jagger is old and weird. But in a poll between the Rolling Stones and Alien Ant Farm?
